The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), formerly National Open School is a national level board of education in India, controlled and managed by the Government of India. It was established by the Ministry of Education (erstwhile Ministry of Human Resource Development) of the Government of India in 1989. [2]

NIOS had a cumulative enrollment of about 15 lakh (1.5 million) students from 2004 to 2009 at secondary and senior secondary levels and enrolls about 3.5 lakh (350k) students annually which makes it the largest open schooling system in the world. [3]

International collaboration and overseas centres

The NIOS collaborates with the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) and UNESCO. [4] It also has study centres for Indian expatriates in the Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Kuwait, Nepal, Canada, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Australia, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore and the United States of America. Examinations

The public examinations are held twice a year in April–May and October–November on dates fixed by the NIOS. However, one is also eligible (If he/she is registered under Stream 1,3 and 4) to appear through the On-Demand Examinations at Secondary (10th) and Senior Secondary (12th). On Demand Exams are held thought the year except for apri-may and oct-nov i .e. when public exams are going on ODE isn't held

Results of the public examinations and on demand are usually announced seven weeks after the last date of examinations.

The Certificate of Secondary Education (CSE) was a subject-specific qualification family awarded in both academic and vocational fields in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It is equivalent to the final year of high school in the United States and A level in the United Kingdom.

All India Secondary School Examination, commonly known as the class 10th board exam, is a centralized public examination that students in schools affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education, primarily in India but also in other Indian-patterned schools affiliated to the CBSE across the world, taken at the end of class 10. The board conducts the examination during the period of February–March. Previously it was taken in March to April every year. In this exam, mathematics, science, and social science are compulsory, with any two languages. Students can also opt skill subject such as information technology, painting, yoga, music or artificial intelligence. Successful candidates are awarded the Secondary School Completion Certificate, a statement of marks, and a migration certificate stating that the candidate has completed secondary schooling and can pursue higher education. The Board of Open Schooling and Skill Education (BOSSE), is the board of open schooling recognized by the Government of Sikkim in India. BOSSE is established under the act of the Board of Open Schooling and Skill Education; Sikkim Act 2020 was passed on 21 September 2020 by the Sikkim Legislative Assembly stated under Act No. 14 of 2020. The state government of Sikkim has created a mechanism through BOSSE to provide for secondary education, senior secondary as well as skill and vocational education up to pre-degree level and to provide opportunity to continue education to such students who have missed the opportunity of school education. The BOSSE is a state open school board that administers examinations for secondary and senior secondary examinations similar to the NIOS, CBSE and the CISCE. BOSSE offers a unique platform where students may choose skill and vocational subjects along with their secondary and senior secondary papers. The board is mandated to promote open schooling and to undertake research, innovation and development activities in the area of open schooling to strengthen the open and distance education system.
