Craig Overton (born 10 April 1994) is an English cricketer who plays for Somerset and England. He is an all-rounder who bowls right-arm medium-fast and bats right-handed. [1] He made his international debut for England in December 2017. [2] His twin brother Jamie Overton also plays cricket for England.
Overton made his first-team debut for Somerset in the 2012 County Championship against Lancashire. [3] He played seven County Championship games in 2012,taking 12 wickets at an average of 30.25. [4] He also scored 75 runs at 10.71;scoring his maiden first-class half-century in the process. [5] Overton also made his List A debut in the same year.
Overton was unable to play throughout much of the 2013 season due to a stress fracture of the back. He managed to play a single first-class match in which he took just a single wicket. [6]
The 2014 season saw Overton become a regular selection for the first-team as he played 27 matches across all three formats. His batting improved greatly as he scored 431 runs in the County Championship in which he averaged 30.78 while also taking 42 wickets at 28.52. [7] In a game against Lancashire,Overton fell short of making his maiden first-class century;given out while on 99. [8] Making his debut in the twenty20 format,Overton struggled with both bat and ball taking just four wickets and scoring a total of 35 runs from 10 matches. [9]
In 2015,Overton was the leading wicket-taker for Somerset in both the County Championship and the One Day Cup taking 47 and 12 wickets respectively. [10] [11] He continued his batting form in the longer form of the game as he averaged 28.38 in 16 County Championship innings.
During a County Championship match against Sussex in September 2015,Overton said "go back to your own fucking country" to Pakistani batsman Ashar Zaidi whilst bowling. The incident was considered racist by some but the Cricket Discipline Commission punished him only for using abusive language. It was his third minor offence—following another report for abusive language in the previous match and physical contact in May—and Overton received an automatic two-match ban. Zaidi later called on Overton to apologise. [12] [13] [14] [15]
Overton enjoyed another successful season in 2016 as he again made over 400 runs and took 34 wickets in the County Championship. [16] During a Championship game against Hampshire,Overton made his maiden first-class century,scoring 138 as part of a stand of 217 for the eighth wicket with Roelof van der Merwe. This set a new record for the eighth wicket for Somerset,beating the previous record of 172 made by Ian Botham and Viv Richards in 1983, [17] although the record was surpassed by Peter Trego and Ryan Davies in Somerset's next game. [18]
In 2021,he was drafted by Southern Brave for the inaugural season of The Hundred. [19] He played for them in 3 matches,picking up 3 wickets in total. In April 2022,he was bought by the Southern Brave for the 2022 season of The Hundred. [20] The following month,in the 2022 County Championship,Overton took his 400th wicket in first-class cricket. Overton first played international cricket for England Under-19s playing a total of 16 youth ODIs between 2011 and 2012. He scored a total of 350 runs at an average of 26.92 with a high score of 68* as well as taking 14 wickets at 35.57. [22]
Overton received his first international call-up in June 2015 when he was selected as cover for Chris Jordan for England's third One Day International (ODI) against New Zealand. [23]
In June 2017,Overton was named in England's Twenty20 International (T20I) squad for the series against South Africa. [24]
In September 2017,Overton was named in England's Test squad for the 2017–18 Ashes series. [25] He made his Test debut in the second Test at Adelaide,on 2 December 2017. [26] He claimed Australian captain Steve Smith as his first Test wicket. [27] In February 2018,he was added to England's ODI squad for their series against New Zealand,after Liam Plunkett was ruled out due to an injury. [28] He made his ODI debut for England against Australia on 21 June 2018. [29]
Overton replaced Chris Woakes for the fourth 2019 Ashes Test. In the first innings,he was brought into bat at number 3 as a nightwatchman after the early dismissal of Joe Denly. [30]
On 29 May 2020,Overton was named in a 55-man group of players to begin training ahead of international fixtures starting in England following the COVID-19 pandemic. [31] [32] On 17 June 2020,Overton was included in England's 30-man squad to start training behind closed doors for the Test series against the West Indies. [33] [34] On 4 July 2020,Overton was named as one of the nine reserve players for the first Test match of the series. [35] [36]
On 30 July 2021,in England vs India's series,England's Ben Stokes announced that he would be taking an "indefinite break" from cricket. Overton was added to England's squad as his replacement. [37]
Andrew Richard Caddick is a former cricketer who played for England as a fast bowler in Tests and ODIs. At 6 ft 5in,Caddick was a successful bowler for England for a decade,taking 13 five-wicket hauls in Test matches. He spent his entire English domestic first-class cricket career at Somerset County Cricket Club,and then played one Minor Counties match for Wiltshire in 2009.
Mohamed Farveez Maharoof,or Farveez Maharoof,is a Sri Lankan former professional cricketer,who played Tests and ODIs. He first made his impression in the 2004 Under-19 Cricket World Cup in which he captained the Sri Lankan team. He enjoyed a prolific school career for Wesley College,with a highest score of 243 and best bowling figures of 8 for 20. An all-rounder,he made his Test debut in 2004. He was part of the Sri Lankan team which finished as runners-up at the 2007 Cricket World Cup.
Paul David Collingwood is an English cricket coach and former player,who played in all three formats of the game internationally for England. He played for Durham County Cricket Club. Collingwood was a regular member of the England Test side and captain of the One Day International (ODI) team (2007–2008). He was the first T20I captain for England. As captain,he led the England team to win their first ICC trophy,the 2010 World Twenty20,and scored the winning run in the final.
Cameron Leon White is an Australian former international cricketer who captained the national side in Twenty20 Internationals. A powerful middle order batsman and right-arm leg-spin bowler,White made his first-class cricket debut as a teenager in the 2000–01 season for the Victoria cricket team as a bowling all-rounder. Steven Michael Davies is a retired English first-class cricketer,a left-handed batsman who last played for Somerset. He batted in the middle order in first-class cricket and opened in limited-overs. Samit Rohit Patel is an English cricketer. A right-handed batsman and a slow left-arm bowler,he plays first-class cricket for Derbyshire County Cricket Club. Patel made his One Day International debut for England in August 2008,however was later dropped from the side after failing to meet fitness levels. After an absence of 2+1⁄2 years,he returned to the ODI side in 2011 and made his Twenty20 International debut,before becoming the 651st player to represent England at Test cricket by winning his first cap on the tour of Sri Lanka in 2012.
Adil Usman Rashid is an English cricketer who plays for England in One Day International (ODI) and Twenty20 International (T20I) cricket,and previously played for the Test team. In domestic cricket,he represents Yorkshire,and has played in multiple Twenty20 leagues,he was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs.2 Crore,in the 2023 Indian Premier League auction. He is regarded as one of the best English spinners of all-time.
Syed Ashar Ahmed Zaidi is a Pakistani first-class cricketer. Zaidi is a left-handed batsman and left-arm orthodox spin bowler who is considered an all-rounder. He has played first-class cricket for Islamabad in Pakistan and for Sussex and Essex in England and has represented the Pakistan A cricket team at international level. He holds a British passport and as a result can play as a domestic player in England.
Craig Kieswetter is an English professional golfer and former cricketer who appeared in 71 matches for the England cricket team between 2010 and 2013. Born and raised in South Africa,Kieswetter moved to England to complete his education,and began playing county cricket for Somerset in 2007. Three years later,he made his international debut in a One Day International (ODI) against Bangladesh. A wicket-keeper batsman,he was considered a one-day specialist,and all his international appearances came in ODIs or Twenty20 Internationals.
Liam Andrew Dawson is an English cricketer who plays for Hampshire and for the England cricket team. He is a right-handed batsman who bowls slow left-arm orthodox spin. He made his international debut for England in July 2016,and has since played all three formats of the game for England,the last in 2018. Dawson was part of the England squad that won the 2019 Cricket World Cup,however,he did not play in any matches during the tournament.
Anya Shrubsole is an English former cricketer who played as a right-arm medium pace bowler and right-handed lower-order batter. She played for England between 2008 and 2022,and played domestic cricket for Somerset,Berkshire,Western Storm,Southern Vipers,Southern Brave and Perth Scorchers. She made her England debut in 2008,and was Player of the Match in the 2017 Women's Cricket World Cup Final. In 2018,she became the first woman to appear on the cover of Wisden Cricketers' Almanack. In April 2022,Shrubsole announced her retirement from international cricket. In June 2023,she announced her intention to retire from all forms of cricket after the 2023 season of The Hundred.
James Michael Vince is an English cricketer who is the captain for Hampshire County Cricket Club and plays for the England cricket team. Vince was part of the England squad that won the 2019 Cricket World Cup. He is a right-handed middle-order batter who is also a right-arm medium pace bowler. He made his international debut for England in May 2015.
Jamie Overton is an English cricketer who plays for Surrey County Cricket Club. He is a right-arm fast bowler who also bats right-handed. He made his debut for Somerset in the 2012 Clydesdale Bank 40 against Surrey. He made his international debut for the England cricket team in June 2022. His twin brother,Craig,plays for Somerset.
Shannon Terry Gabriel is a Trinidadian cricketer who played internationally cricket for West Indies cricket team. He is a fast bowler. He quickly became a key member of the Trinidad and Tobago attack after his debut in 2010. Following a neck injury to Ravi Rampaul,which forced him out of the match,Gabriel made his Test match debut for West Indies in May 2012,against England at Lord's. He made his One Day International (ODI) debut on 21 June 2016 against Australia. He is the first player to bat at No.12 in a Test match. On 28 August 2024,Gabriel announced his retirement from international cricket.
The England cricket team toured Australia between November 2017 and February 2018 to play five Tests and five One Day Internationals (ODIs). They also played in a three nation Twenty20 International (T20I) tournament,along with New Zealand,who co-hosted the tournament along with Australia. England additionally played two first-class matches,a two-day tour match and a one-day tour match against Cricket Australia XI,as well as a Twenty20 against the Prime Minister's XI. The Test matches made up the 2017–18 Ashes series,with Australia regaining the Ashes by winning the series 4–0. England won the ODI series 4–1. This was England's first bilateral ODI series win in Australia.
