The German DRG Class 71.0 was a 2-4-2 T locomotive with the Deutsche Reichsbahn, which was intended as a replacement for railbuses. Originally it had been planned for these standard engines ( Einheitsloks ) to haul fast passenger trains.
Two vehicles were delivered in 1934 by the firm of Schwartzkopff and two each in 1936 by the firms of Borsig and Krupp. The two-cylinder superheated engines were equipped with automatic underfeed stokers for one-man operation. In the course of its service the boiler overpressure was reduced from 20 bar to 16 bar for safety reasons. All the locomotives had a plate frame. The second coupled wheelset was driven and the carrying wheels rested in Bissel axles.
The Deutsche Bundesbahn took over all the engines after the Second World War and allocated them to the locomotive depot (Bahnbetriebswerk or Bw) in Nuremberg. Later they were all transferred to Kaiserslautern and Landau. The locomotives were retired by 1956.
No examples of the DRG Class 71.0 remain.
The DB Class 66 was a class of two Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB) locomotives designed for fast goods train and passenger train services on the main and branch lines of Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB), the national railway of the former West Germany.
The Deutsche Reichsbahn had a standard passenger train tank engine with a wheel arrangement of 1'C1' or 2-6-2 and a low axle load, which was designated in their classification system as the DRG Class 64. The Class 64 was developed from 1926 onwards and it was built between 1928 and 1940. Many German manufacturers contributed to the series.
The Bavarian Class D XII steam locomotives were manufactured by the firm of Krauss from 1897 for the Royal Bavarian State Railways. Ninety six of them were procured for service on the stub lines running from Munich into the mountains, but in reality they were stationed in many large Bavarian locomotive depots. Two engines were transferred to the Palatinate Railway (Pfalzbahn) in 1916, the remaining 94 later joined the Deutsche Reichsbahn fleet and were incorporated as DRG Class 73.0-1 with operating numbers 73 031–124.
The Pt 2/4 H was a class of steam locomotive built by the firm of Krauss for the Royal Bavarian State Railways between 1906 and 1908. They were used on routes in Bavaria to haul light, fast passenger trains.
The newer Class D II engines of the Royal Bavarian State Railways were goods train tank locomotives. The designation 'D II' was given to these locomotives only after all the older Class D II engines had been mustered out. Of the 73 engines that were built, 70 entered the Deutsche Reichsbahn as Class 89.6; the remaining 3 transferred to the Polish State Railways (PKP) in 1919 as Class TKh101. The majority were still working even after the Second World War. The last one was not taken out of service until 1960.
The six-coupled P 5 of the Palatinate Railway (Pfalzbahn) was to replace the four-coupled locomotives in the Palatinate. They were given a leading Krauss-Helmholtz bogie and a trailing bogie in order to achieve satisfactory weight distribution.
The Class 62 engines were standard passenger train tank locomotives of Germany's Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft (DRG).
The locomotives of the German DRG Class 81 were standard (Einheitsdampflokomotiven) goods train tank locomotives with the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft (DRG).
The German DRG Class 84s were standard goods train tank locomotives with the Deutsche Reichsbahn. A total of twelve engines were placed into service by the Reichsbahn between 1935 and 1937. The machines were given operating numbers 84 001–012. They were worked on the Müglitz Valley Railway (Müglitztalbahn) between Heidenau and Altenberg in the Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge), for which they were specially designed to negotiate tight curves. They were manufactured by the firms of Schwartzkopff and Orenstein & Koppel. One feature was that they were fitted with Schwartzkopff-Eckhardt II bogies.
The German Class 87 was a standard goods train tank locomotive with the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft (DRG). It was specifically designed by the firm of Orenstein & Koppel for use in Hamburg Harbour. The harbour lines had minimal curve radii of only 100 metres (330 ft) and high train loads to be moved. The axle load had to be no more than 17.5 tonnes. These requirements resulted in an axle count of five axles. In order to keep wear and tear on the running gear within acceptable limits only the middle three wheelsets were linked by coupling rods, the two Luttermöller outside axles were driven by cogs.
The DRG Class 89.0 was a goods train tank engine of standard design built for the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DRG).
Between 1934 and 1941 the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DRG) converted a total of 691 former Prussian-built Class 55.25–56 steam locomotives; the result was the DRG Class 56.2–8. The carrying axle enabled higher speeds and the engine could even be used as a passenger train locomotive. In addition the average axle load was lower, so that these locomotives could also be used on branch lines. The conversion entailed moving the boiler forward and raising it somewhat. The vehicles were given operating numbers between 56 201 and 56 891, although the numbering was not continuous.
The Württemberg T 3s were German steam locomotives with the Royal Württemberg State Railways delivered between 1891 and 1913.
The DB Class 82 was a goods train tank locomotive with the Deutsche Bundesbahn in Germany, that was built in the period after the Second World War and was intended for shunting and normal rail services. They were to replace the ten-coupled state railway (Länderbahn) engines and also the accident-prone Class 87 DRG Einheitslok.
The Oldenburg Class T 5.1 was a German steam locomotive built for the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg State Railways as a tank engine for passenger train duties. Its design was based on that of the Prussian T 5.1.
The Prussian Class G 4 were German, six-coupled, goods train, steam locomotives with a boiler pressure of 12 bar, built primarily for the Prussian state railways. Classified by the state railway in 1905, they included 16 locomotives from the railway division of Mainz, that originally came from the Hessian Ludwigsbahn. These earlier locomotives were delivered between 1872 and 1896 and did not meet the Prussian norms.
The Baden VI b was the first German tank locomotive with a 2-6-2 wheel arrangement. It was developed by the firm of Maffei for the Grand Duchy of Baden State Railways in order to provide faster services on the Höllentalbahn. As a result, the first six batches were given a firebox sloping to the rear. One striking feature was also the connecting pipe between the two steam domes.
The Prussian state railways grouped a variety of different types of passenger tank locomotive into its Prussian Class T 5. Several examples of the sub-classes T 5.1 and T 5.2 transferred into the Deutsche Reichsbahn as DRG Classes 71.0 and 72.0.
The Baden Class I b locomotives of the Grand Duchy of Baden State Railways were built for the pontoon bridges from Heidelberg to Speyer. Altogether three of these engines were on duty, of which two had been taken over from the Palatinate Railway in 1874. A third machine was procured directly from the Maschinenbau-Gesellschaft Karlsruhe in 1893.
