Derby is a hamlet in Erie County, New York, United States. It is the postal address for much of the town of Evans, within which Derby is fully contained. The Derby ZIP code is 14047, and includes the neighborhood of Highland-on-the-Lake. [1] Derby is also home to the North Evans Fire District [2] which includes Highland Hose Volunteer Fire Company and the North Evans Volunteer Fire Company. Derby is home to Highland Elementary School, part of the Lake Shore School District. [3]

Derby's retail district is centered on, and around, Erie Road (New York State Route 5) and includes a variety of stores and services including a Rite Aid, [4] Tops Friendly Market, [5] McDonald's, [6] Autozone, [7] the Derby Animal Hospital, [8] Derby Optical [9] Tim Hortons coffee shop, [10] The Bagel Jar, [11] and The Network Consulting Group of WNY [11].

Derby is located on the shores of Lake Erie in the southwest part of Erie County and 18 miles (29 km) southwest of Buffalo. In the first quarter of the 20th century, many wealthy Buffalo families (i.e. Larkin, Kellogg, Schoellkopf, Mann, Trubee, Esty, Schmidt, Coit) built their summer estates there, including one called "Graycliff" designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for the family of Darwin Martin, an executive at the Larkin Soap Company. Also at Derby is the historic First Church of Evans Complex.

The Graycliff estate was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1926, and built between 1926 and 1931. It is approximately 17 miles southwest of downtown Buffalo, New York, at 6472 Old Lake Shore Road in the hamlet of Highland-on-the-Lake, with a mailing address of Derby. Situated on a bluff overlooking Lake Erie with sweeping views of downtown Buffalo and the Ontario shore, it is one of the most ambitious and extensive summer estates Wright designed. It is now fully restored and operates as a historic house museum, open for guided tours year round. There is also a summer Market at Graycliff, free and open to the public on select Thursday evenings. Graycliff Conservancy is run by Executive Director Anna Kaplan, who was hired in 2019.

<i>Morania</i> fire Fire on a freight barge which operated on the Great Lakes

Morania #130 was a 4000-ton, 120-foot (37 m) freight barge which operated on the Great Lakes. On October 29, 1951, it was carrying 800,000 US gallons of gasoline, when it was pushed by the diesel tug M/V Dauntless #12 into the path of the 454-foot (138-meter) steamer Penobscot – which was proceeding seaward empty after unloading grain at Buffalo, New York – on the Buffalo River. When the steamer backed away, a spark ignited the gasoline aboard the barge, resulting in a fire which killed 11 sailors, including two from Penobscot. The fire burned for several days as thousands of spectators watched.
