Devonport-Takapuna is a local government area in Auckland, in New Zealand's Auckland Region, governed by the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board and Auckland Council. It currently aligns with the council's North Shore Ward. [1]
The local board area includes the major suburbs of Devonport and Takapuna. It also includes the smaller suburbs of Castor Bay, Crown Hill, Forrest Hill, Milford, Lake Pupuke, Belmont, Narrow Neck, Stanley Bay, Bayswater and Shoal Bay. [1]
The area extends from Sunnynook and Castor Bay in the north, to Stanley Bay and Devonport in the south, to State Highway 1. It features Mt Victoria, North Head, and the large volcanic crater of Lake Pupuke. [1]
There are several beaches in the area. [1]
The Bruce Mason Centre, The PumpHouse Theatre, Rose Centre, Depot Artspace and Michael King Writers’ Centre are also located in the area. [1]
Devonport is a harbourside suburb of Auckland, New Zealand. It is located on the North Shore, at the southern end of the Devonport Peninsula that runs southeast from near Lake Pupuke in Takapuna, forming the northern side of the Waitematā Harbour. East of Devonport lies North Head, the northern promontory guarding the mouth of the harbour.
The North Shore is part of the large urban area of Auckland, New Zealand, located to the north of the Waitematā Harbour. To the east, has the Hauraki Gulf, to the west, is West Auckland, to the south, has the Waitematā Harbour and Central Auckland, to the north has the Hibiscus Coast. From 1989 until 2010, North Shore City was an independent city within the Auckland Region, until it was incorporated into the Auckland Council.
Lake Pupuke is a heart-shaped freshwater lake occupying a volcanic crater between the suburbs of Takapuna and Milford on the North Shore of Auckland, New Zealand. The heart shape is a result of its formation by the linking of two circular craters – a larger one forming most of the lake and a smaller one forming the arm in the northeast. Separated from the sea by less than 200 m at one point, it has a circumference of about 4.5 km and reaches 57 m in depth. It is popular for recreational activities and the lakefront property around it.
Northcote is a suburb of Auckland in northern New Zealand. It is situated on the North Shore, on the northern shores of Waitematā Harbour, 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) northwest of the Auckland City Centre. The suburb includes the peninsula of Northcote Point where the northern approaches to the Auckland Harbour Bridge are located, and Northcote Central, the commercial centre of Northcote. Northcote features two volcanic maars.
East Coast Bays is a string of small suburbs that form the northernmost part of the North Shore, part of the contiguous Auckland metropolitan area in New Zealand. The suburbs line the north-east coast of the city along the shore of the Hauraki Gulf and Rangitoto Channel. They include, from north to south, Long Bay, Torbay, Waiake Bay, Browns Bay, Rothesay Bay, Murrays Bay, Mairangi Bay, Campbells Bay and Castor Bay.
Takapuna is a suburb located on the North Shore of Auckland, New Zealand. The suburb is situated at the beginning of a south-east-facing peninsula forming the northern side of the Waitematā Harbour. While very small in terms of population, it was the seat of the North Shore City Council before amalgamation into Auckland Council in 2010 and contains substantial shopping and entertainment areas, acting as a CBD for the North Shore.
Milford is a suburb located on the North Shore, Auckland. It is located on northern side of Lake Pupuke. It also has a popular swimming beach, which runs some two kilometers from Black Rock in the south to Castor Bay in the north. The Wairau Creek reaches the sea at the Hauraki Gulf at the northern end of Milford Beach, and its lower tidal reaches host the Milford Marina.
Bayswater is a suburb located on the North Shore of Auckland, New Zealand. It lies on a peninsula which juts into the Waitemata Harbour. Politically the suburb is part of the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board and the North Shore ward of Auckland Council.
Vauxhall is a suburb of the North Shore of Auckland, New Zealand. Alison Park lies directly to the west, separating Vauxhall from Lake Road, which carries the majority of traffic between Takapuna and Devonport. Vauxhall is included in the Narrow Neck census area.
Takapuna Grammar School is a state coeducational secondary school located in the suburb of Belmont on the North Shore of Auckland, New Zealand. Established in 1927, the school mainly serves the eponymous suburb of Takapuna and the entire Devonport Peninsula. A total of 2008 students from Years 9 to 13 attend the school as of April 2023.
Castor Bay is a bay and suburb of the North Shore, located in Auckland which is in the North Island of New Zealand. Located between Milford and Campbells Bay, it is part of the East Coast Bays. To the east lies the islands of Rangitoto and Motutapu, which are easily visible from land. The suburb is in the North Shore ward, one of the thirteen administrative divisions of Auckland Council.

The Devonport-Takapuna Local Board covers from Castor Bay, and Sunnynook south to the end of the Devonport Peninsula; it is separated from the Kaipātiki board area by the Northern Motorway. This local board sits in the Auckland Council office buildings on The Strand in Takapuna. These were the North Shore City Council offices until the North Shore City Council was merged into Auckland Council in 2010. It is part of the North Shore Ward of Auckland Council, which also includes the Kaipātiki Local Board.
Shore Action is a political ticket which contests the boards and council seats in the North Shore Ward of the Auckland Council. They have a strong focus on retention of local assets and investment in the natural environment, along with a focus on local participation in local body politics.
The PumpHouse Theatre is an artist-led arts centre that presents theatre and other events in the North Shore of Auckland, New Zealand.
Waitematā is a local government area covering the most central suburbs of Auckland, in New Zealand's Auckland Region. It is governed by the Waitematā Local Board and Auckland Council, and is located within the council's Waitematā and Gulf Ward.
The Waitemata County was one of the counties of New Zealand in the North Island. Established in 1876, the county covered West Auckland, Rodney and the North Shore. The county shrunk in size between 1886 and 1954 when various urban areas on the North Shore and in West Auckland became boroughs and established their own local councils. The Waitemata County was dissolved in 1974, with the county council area being taken over by the newly established Waitemata City in the west, and by Takapuna City and Rodney Council in the north.
