Dhiraj Bommadevara (born 4 September 2001) is an Indian recurve archer. He is ranked 12th in the world. [1] He finished fourth in the 2024 Paris Olympics. [2] Bommadevara is a gold, silver, and multiple bronze medalist at the World Cup. [2] He also won a silver medal at the Asian Games and a gold medal at the World Youth Championships.

Personal life

Dhiraj is from Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh. His father Bommadevara Shravan Kumar used to be a technical official of the Archery Association of India. He studied for a degree at the SRR and CVR Government Degree College, Vijayawada. [3] He started archery at the Volga Archery Academy in Vijayawada in 2006. He joined Army in 2021 in the rank of Havaldar, after training at the Army Sports Institute in Pune for four years. [3] [4] He is backed by Olympic Gold Quest. [4]

Career

Dhiraj was selected to represent India at the 2022 Asian Games at Hangzhou, China. [5] He took part in the Indian Men's recurve team along with Atanu Das and Tushar Shelke and won the silver medal at the 2022 Asian Games. [6] [7] [8] They lost the final to Republic of Korea. [9] [10]

Later in 2023, he represented India at the World Championships in Berlin, Germany in the Men's team and individual events apart from the Mixed team event. [11] [12] In the same year, he also took part in the Men's team and Men's individual events at the World Cup at Antalya, Turkey, [11] and in the Men's team, Men's individual and Mixed team events at the World Cups in Paris, France and Shanghai, China. [11] The next event in 2023, he won two bronze medals in the Men's team and Men's individual events at the World Cup Stage 3 at Medellin, Colombia. [11] [13] [14] In September 2023, he took part in the World Cup at Hermosillo. [15]

Earlier in January 2022, he defeated Tokyo Olympian Tarundeep Rai in the Ranking tournament at Hyderabad. [16]

In 2021, he won a bronze medal in the Men's individual event at the World Cups in Guatemala City, Guatemala and Paris, France. [11] [17]

2024 Summer Olympics

Dhiraj made his first Olympic appearance in Paris in the 2024 Summer Olympics. After the ranking round, Dhiraj finished 4th (With a score of 681), making this one of the best rankings by an Indian archer in the Olympic Games. However, he lost 5-6(5+) to Canada's Eric Peters in a closely fought Men's Individual 1/16 Elimination Round. Dhiraj advanced to the quarterfinals in the Men's Team, along with Pravin Jadhav and Tarundeep Rai. However, the team lost to Turkey's team 2-6. Dhiraj scripted history, with Ankita Bhakat by competing in India's first-ever Olympic medal in archery in the Mixed Team Bronze Medal Match but lost 2-6 to United States of America's team. Deepika Kumari is an Indian professional archer. She won a gold medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in the women's individual recurve event. She won individual gold in two of the three stages of the World Cup—one in Guatemala and another in Paris. In the process she also reclaimed the number one ranking after nine years at the Paris World Cup. Deepika won individual gold medals at the Archery World Cup Stage 1. She defeated Mexico by 5–1 in the final to win the gold in Paris.

The women's recurve individual archery event at the 2010 Commonwealth Games was a competition held as part of the archery programme at the Yamuna Sports Complex in Delhi, India, from 4 October to 10 October 2010. It was the second time that the recurve individual event for women had been included in the Commonwealth Games and the first time it had been contested since the 1982 Games in Brisbane, Australia.

Jung Dasomi is an archer from South Korea who specialises in recurve archery. Jung made a highly successful debut in international archery in 2011, winning medals at the World Archery Championships, Archery World Cup and Summer Universiade, and concluding the year as the number one-ranked female recurve archer in the World Archery Rankings. She won two further medals in 2014 at the Asian Games before a downturn in form relegated her from the national team. Jung did not return to international archery competitions until 2018.

Patrick Huston is a British two-time Olympian archer from Belfast, Northern Ireland. He captured three world championship titles under the youth level, and eventually competed as a member of the two person archery squad of Team GB at the 2016 Summer Olympics, in Rio, losing the first round match to the eventual champion Ku Bon-chan of South Korea. In the Tokyo 2020 Olympics his best result was a men's team 5th. Huston currently lives near Lilleshall National Sporting Centre and trained full-time under senior national coach Richard Priestman for Archery UK, while remaining a loyal founding member of East Belfast Archery Club. Mete Gazoz is a Turkish recurve archer. He won the gold medal in the men's individual event at the 2020 Summer Olympics held in Tokyo, Japan. He also represented Turkey at the 2016 Summer Olympics held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In the 2023 World Archery Championships held in Berlin, Mete Gazoz emerged victorious, claiming the prestigious Individual title. In an intense final, he triumphed over the skilled Canadian archer Eric Peters, securing his place as the first Turkish archer to achieve the esteemed recurve gold medal in a World Championship.

Atanu Das is an Indian archer. He represents India in the recurve men's individual and team events. His current world ranking is 9 as of 22 July 2021. He is the spouse of former World No. 1 Indian archer Deepika Kumari. The Indian Men's recurve team consisting of Atanu Das, Dhiraj Bommadevara and Tushar Shelke won the silver medal at the 2022 Asian Games. They lost the final to Republic of Korea.

Ankita Bhakat is an Indian recurve archer from West Bengal, who is currently ranked world number 20 by the World Archery Federation. She is a member of the Indian national recurve team and competes in international events in the women's individual, women's team and the mixed team recurve categories. She competed in the 2017 World Archery Youth Championships held at Rosario, Argentina, and won the gold medal in the recurve junior mixed team event with partner Jemson Singh Ningthoujam.

Pravin Ramesh Jadhav is an Indian archer who competes in the recurve discipline. At the 2019 World Archery Championships, he was a member of the first Indian team to qualify for the final since 2005; the team received the silver medal. He made his Olympic debut in Tokyo at the 2020 Summer Olympics and represented India again at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

Bhajan Kaur is an Indian archer from Haryana. She was selected for the Indian Archery team for the recurve events at the 2022 Asian Games held in Hangzhou, China. Along with Ankita Bhakat and Simranjeet Kaur, she won the Women's team recurve event bronze medal for India. The Indian trio defeated the Vietnamese team 6–2 in the bronze-medal play-off. On 16 June 2024, she won a gold in the final Olympic qualifier at Anatalya, Turkey. She represented India at the 2024 Summer Olympic Games at Paris.

Tushar Prabhakar Shelke is an Indian archer. He represents India in the recurve men's individual and team events. He is selected for the Indian Archery team to take part in the 2022 Asian Games at Hangzhou, China. The Indian Men's recurve team consisting of Atanu Das, Dhiraj Bommadevara and Tushar Shelke won the silver medal at the 2022 Asian Games.

Parth Salunkhe is an Indian recurve archer. He's a silver medalist at the Asian Championships as well as a 4-time gold, 5-time silver, 2-time bronze medalist at the Asian Cup. He's also a 3-time gold medalist and 1-time bronze medalist at the World Youth Championships.
