Dice is the second extended play by South Korean singer Onew. It was released on April 11, 2022, through SM Entertainment. It consists of six tracks, including the lead single of the same name.

Background and release

Onew released his debut solo EP, Voice , in 2018, after which he enlisted in the military. [1] His second EP was initially scheduled for a September 2021 release, [2] before eventually being confirmed for April 2022, three years and four months after Voice. [3] [4] Onew took a greater role in the production process than on his first EP, and stated that he felt increased pressure as a result. [4] Promotional materials, including video and image teasers, were released beginning March 31. [5] Onew hosted a countdown livestream on Shinee's YouTube channel on April 11 to celebrate the EP's release. [6] He promoted it with performances on M Countdown , Music Bank , Inkigayo and Show! Music Core , [7] [8] marking his first time engaging in promotional activities for a solo release. [4]

Composition

"I wanted to show that Onew is a person who can do not only calm songs, such as ballads or drama soundtracks, but also can dance and try something new."

Onew included songs from a wide range of genres in order to showcase his diversity as an artist. [9] The six tracks on the EP represent the six sides of a dice, each reflecting different aspects of his artistry. [4] Lead single "Dice" is a pop song that contains rhythmical guitar plucking and synth sounds. It is about betting on love despite knowing it's a game one will inevitably lose. [10] "Sunshine" is an upbeat electronic pop song about embarking on a spontaneous trip and escaping from the monotony of daily life. It is guided by a bassline which is aided by an electric guitar. [11] "On the Way" is a romantic song with a fantasy sound that utilises piano and guitar adlibs. The lyrics detail losing sleep at night, thinking about another person and wanting to go to them. [12] "Love Phobia" is an alternative pop song that expresses scepticism about love while simultaneously desiring it. [13] "Yeowoobi" is an emotional break-up song with a dreamlike yet lonely atmosphere. The lyrics compare feelings of love that are warm but sad to a rain shower in the sunlight. [14] "In the Whale" is a midtempo pop song that takes the listener on a "metaphorical journey through the insides of a beast". [15] [16] The lyrics, written by Onew, express that he will always be by his fans' side, even in the darkness. [15]

Dice received critical acclaim. Tássia Assis from NME gave Dice a 5 out of 5 stars, describing the EP as "multifaceted" as it offered a variety of sounds yet all six tracks sat together cohesively, which allowed Onew to showcase his true talent. She states that: "for a long time, and despite his proven talent, it felt like Onew stood in the shadows – or inside a whale, if you will – but the skies have cleared now. There’s a whole ocean to explore ahead. By taking a chance and trusting his own experience, Onew allows himself to shine in all his multifaceted glory." [16] Sophia Simon-Bashall of The Line of Best Fit felt that the songs "showcase that Onew is an artist of variety" and praised his vocal delivery. She named "On the Way" and "Love Phobia" as album highlights. [17]

He debuted as the lead vocalist and leader of the boy group Shinee in May 2008, who went on to become one of the best-selling artists in South Korea.

2009, Year of Us is the third extended play (EP) by South Korean boy group Shinee. It consists of six tracks and it incorporates alternative rock and hip-hop music genres. The digital version of the album was released on October 19, 2009, with a physical release on October 22. The title track, "Ring Ding Dong", was released on October 14, 2009, through various music sites.

Lee Tae-min, better known mononymously as Taemin, is a South Korean singer, actor, and dancer. He debuted as a member of the boy band Shinee in May 2008 and the supergroup SuperM in 2019, both under SM Entertainment, and has subsequently been labeled by media outlets as the "Idol's Idol" due to the large number of idols citing him as an inspiration. As an actor, Taemin's first role was as Junsu in the 2009 MBC comedy Tae-Hee, Hye-Kyo, Ji-Hyun.

<i>Romeo</i> (EP) 2009 EP by Shinee

Romeo is the second EP by South Korean boy group Shinee. It was released on May 25, 2009, in South Korea under the seal of the label SM Entertainment. The EP consists of six tracks including the title song "Juliette" and is Shinee's first Korean release after a seven-month hiatus. On August 29, 2011, a Japanese version of "Juliette" was released as Shinee's second Japanese single with the original Japanese song "Kiss Kiss Kiss" as a B-side. <i>Everybody</i> (EP) 2013 EP by Shinee

Everybody is the fifth EP recorded and performed by the South Korean contemporary R&B idol group Shinee. The EP consists of seven tracks and it incorporates complextro and R&B-slow jam music genres. It was released for physical purchase domestically and for digital download globally on October 14, 2013, by SM Entertainment. The track "Everybody" was chosen as the lead single for the promotional cycle. To promote the album, Shinee appeared on several South Korean music programs including M Countdown and Inkigayo.

<i>Odd</i> (album) 2015 studio album by Shinee

Odd is the fourth Korean studio album by South Korean boy band Shinee. It was released digitally and physically on May 18, 2015, under SM Entertainment and distributed by KT Music. The album contains 11 songs, including the title track, "View". The music video for the title track was filmed in Thailand. The repackaged album, Married to the Music, was released on August 3, 2015, with four additional songs.

<i>1 of 1</i> (Shinee album) 2016 studio album by Shinee

1 of 1 is the fifth Korean studio album and the ninth overall by South Korean boy band Shinee. It was released digitally and physically on October 5, 2016, under SM Entertainment and distributed by KT Music. The album contains nine songs, including the title track of the same name, "1 of 1". Musically, the album is a modernized twist on the retro genre, and stretches back to the 1980–1990 period. Additionally, based on their '90s theme, the group released a limited edition of cassette tapes alongside the CD version. In order to promote the album, Shinee appeared on several South Korean music programs, such as Music Bank, Show! Music Core, and Inkigayo, where they performed material from the album. On November 15, 2016, Shinee released a repackaged version of their fifth studio album titled 1 and 1 with five new songs, including the title track, "Tell Me What to Do". The album is also Shinee's last Korean album to feature Jonghyun prior to his death the following year.

<i>Self-Portrait</i> (EP) 2020 EP by Suho

Self-Portrait is the debut extended play by South Korean singer-songwriter Suho. It was released on March 30, 2020, by SM Entertainment. The physical edition was released in two versions, Archive #1 and Archive #2, while the digital version shares the cover of the latter, a collage of four impressionist paintings of Suho's face. The EP features six tracks including the lead single, "Let's Love".

<i>Dont Call Me</i> (album) 2021 studio album by Shinee

Don't Call Me is the seventh Korean studio album by South Korean boy group Shinee. The album was released on February 22, 2021, through SM Entertainment. It is the group's first release since three of the members completed their military service with the exception of member Taemin and also the group's first album not to feature late member Jonghyun in any capacity. Working with producers such as Dem Jointz, Yoo Young-jin, Kenzie, and Ryan S. Jhun, the album spans several genres such as pop, hip hop, EDM, R&B, and reggae. Shinee forwent an overarching theme for the album, instead opting for songs that marked the group's return after almost three years and presenting the record as a gift to fans. A repackage of the album, Atlantis, was released on April 12, 2021.

Advice is the third Korean extended play recorded by South Korean singer Taemin. It was released on May 18, 2021, by SM Entertainment, produced by Cutfather, PhD, Moonshine and Ryan S. Jhun, among others. The album contains five songs including the lead single, "Advice".

<i>Bad Love</i> (EP) 2021 EP by Key

Bad Love is the first Korean extended play by South Korean singer Key. It was released on September 27, 2021, through SM Entertainment. Marketed as his first "mini album" release, it consists of six songs, including the singles "Hate That..." and "Bad Love". The EP was Key's first solo release since returning from the military. Conceptually, it follows a retro space theme, inspired by the science fiction films of the 1980s and 1990s. It peaked at number three on South Korea's Gaon Album Chart and received positive reviews from music critics.
