Dongguan Prison (Chinese :东莞监狱) is located in the Shilong area of Dongguan,Guangdong,China.
According to the Laogai Research Foundation,the Dongguan Prison opened in November 1988 as Shilong Prison,and was given its present name in 1995. [1]
The prison complex was expanded in the subsequent decades,so that it now occupies most of Xinzhou (新洲),an island in the East River upon which the prison is situated.
According to a July 2013 report by the Shenzhen-based Daily Sunshine (晶報),Dongguan Prison has a population of around 5,000 inmates. The report stated that nearly 500 of the prisoners were foreigners from various countries. The prison reportedly received its first foreign inmate in 1996. [2]
Prisoners at Dongguan Prison are reportedly forced to work manufacturing goods,and are allegedly routinely beaten. In 2013,former inmates told The Australian Financial Review that they were forced to make disposable headphones sold to major airlines for the equivalent of around £0.85 per month. They said they were beaten,tasered,or put in solitary confinement for failing to achieve production targets. [3]
Similarly, Der Spiegel interviewed several ex-inmates of Dongguan Prison in 2019. They described overcrowded living conditions and sweltering heat in the summertime. A German ex-prisoner said that the prisoners were forced to work nine-hour days,six or seven days a week,manufacturing model Porsche cars,Samsonite-branded luggage locks,and transformers. Several ex-inmates described torture and abuse of prisoners,including the strapping of prisoners to a torture chair for days or weeks,and electric shocks. [4]
Laogai,short for laodong gaizao (劳动改造),which means reform through labor,is a criminal justice system involving the use of penal labor and prison farms in the People's Republic of China (PRC). Láogǎi is different from láojiào,or re-education through labor,which was the abolished administrative detention system for people who were not criminals but had committed minor offenses,and was intended to "reform offenders into law-abiding citizens". Persons who were detained in the laojiao were detained in facilities that were separate from those which comprised the general prison system of the laogai. Both systems,however,were based on penal labor.
Re-education through labor,abbreviated laojiao was a system of administrative detention in mainland China. Active from 1957 to 2013,the system was used to detain persons who were accused of committing minor crimes such as petty theft,prostitution,and trafficking of illegal drugs,as well as political dissidents,petitioners,and Falun Gong followers. It was separated from the much larger laogai system of prison labor camps.

An important industrial city in the Pearl River Delta,Dongguan borders the provincial capital of Guangzhou to the north,Huizhou to the northeast,Shenzhen to the south,and the Pearl River to the west. It is part of the Pearl River Delta built-up area with more than 65.57 million inhabitants as of the 2020 census spread over nine municipalities across an area of 19,870 square kilometers (7,670 sq mi).
Mao Hengfeng is a women's rights and human rights activist in the People's Republic of China. She refused to abort her third child after already having twins and was detained in an ankang and then dismissed from her job. A frequent petitioner,Mao served a year and a half of re-education through labor from 2004 to 2005 and two and half years in prison for "intentional destruction of property" in from 2006 to 2008. She was released from Shanghai Women's Prison on 29 November 2008. Since then she has served another year in RTL after protesting in support of Liu Xiaobo. She was briefly released,in February 2011,but under house arrest. She was almost immediately taken again,and placed in Shanghai City Prison Hospital,where she was previously tortured and ill-treated.
The Ministry of Public Security Qincheng Prison is a maximum-security prison located in Qincheng Village,Xingshou,Changping District,Beijing in the People's Republic of China. The prison was built in 1958 with aid from the Soviet Union and is the only prison belonging to China's Ministry of Public Security. The Ministry of Justice operates other non-military prisons.

Yu Dongyue was born in Liuyang,a city in Hunan province of China on December 4,1967. He is the former arts editor of Liuyang Daily. In the Tiananmen protests of 1989,following a plan made by his friend Yu Zhijian,he and Lu Decheng threw eggshells full of paint at a portrait of China’s political figure Mao Zedong. Yu Dongyue was given a 20-year prison sentence for "sabotage" and "counter-revolutionary propaganda”. He had become badly disturbed psychologically. He was also criticized for his "very avant-garde views on art." He also had been subjected to various physical tortures because of “reactionary statements”he and his friends made about officials.
The Hello Kitty murder case took place in Hong Kong in the spring of 1999,when a nightclub hostess was abducted in Lai Yiu Estate,tortured and raped in an apartment in Tsim Sha Tsui,Kowloon,after stealing a wallet owned by one of her frequent customers.

As of 2020,it is estimated that 1.7 million people had been incarcerated in China,which is the second-highest prison population after the United States. China also retains the use of the death penalty with the approval of the Supreme People's Court,and there is a system of death penalty with reprieve in which the sentence is suspended unless the convict commits another major crime within two years while they are detained.
The Laogai Research Foundation is a human rights NGO located in Washington,D.C,United States. The foundation's mission is to "gather information on and raise public awareness of the Laogai—China's extensive system of forced-labor prison camps."
Palden Gyatso was a Tibetan Buddhist monk. Arrested for protesting during the Chinese invasion of Tibet,he spent 33 years in Chinese prisons and labor camps,where he was extensively tortured,and served the longest term of any Tibetan political prisoner. After his release in 1992 he fled to Dharamsala in North India,in exile. He was still a practicing monk and became a political activist,traveling the world publicizing the cause of Tibet up until his death in 2018. His autobiography Fire Under the Snow is also known as The Autobiography of a Tibetan Monk. He was the subject of the 2008 documentary film Fire Under the Snow.

The right to petition was available in ancient China,and was later revived by the communists,with important differences.

Jigme Gyatso is a Tibetan activist of the Tibetan Independence Organisation who,in 1996,was sentenced to 15 years in prison on charges of "leading a counter-revolutionary organisation" and "inciting splittism". Two more years were added to his sentence in 2004 when he protested in jail. Several international human rights groups have protested or campaigned on his behalf,and Amnesty International has designated him a prisoner of conscience.
The 2013 Beijing Capital International Airport bombing occurred at 6:24 pm on Saturday,July 20,2013,near the Exit B at the second floor of Terminal 3 in Beijing Capital International Airport in Beijing,China. The blast only injured the bomber Ji Zhongxing himself. No flights were affected,according to airport officials.
Chishan Prison,also known as Hunan Provincial No.1 Prison,is a prison in Hunan of the People's Republic of China.
Jimmy Chua Chap Seng,nicknamed Hokkien Chai,was a Singaporean criminal and former police officer who was infamous for masterminding the 1986 Pudu Prison hostage incident. Chua,who allegedly committed the murder of a police officer and several firearm offences in Malaysia,was detained at Pudu Prison when he and five other inmates decided to orchestrate a prison escape by taking two members of the prison staff hostage for six days. The incident ended with no fatalities,and Chua and his five accomplices were all arrested and faced kidnapping charges over the hostage incident. However,in a separate court case,Chua was sentenced to death for firearm charges under the Internal Security Act,and was hanged on 10 October 1989 without being convicted for his role in the Pudu incident,which oversaw the imprisonment of his five associates for the case.
