Downtown Brampton [23] [24] [3] [25] [26] is historically the oldest region of the city Brampton, and the site where the first settlements were established.[ citation needed ] The area has a population density of 4,109 people per square kilometers. [4] Currently, a tunnel connecting Downtown Brampton to the Brampton Gateway Terminal is being constructed. [27] [28] [6] Downtown funded over two billion dollars to the construction of the LRT [29] [30] [31] [32] As of 2022, it has a population of roughly 32,000 residents. [3] Downtown Brampton is divided into few neighborhoods, street and districts, such as Bramalea, Castlemore and Churchville, and Garden Square. [33] [34]

History

1820s-1900s: Founding of Downtown Brampton, Bramptom Mall

The date of its founding goes all the way back to around the 1820s, before the founding of Brampton. [8] Brampton Mall, located at Main Street,[ citation needed ] was meant to stay open Mondays, against the Brampton's closing hours by-law. [35] Patrick McQuade, the mall's director, later told the press that they indeed would observe closing hours, stating "We feel by-law amendments might be studied toward the end of the year." [36]

2018-2024: IDP Plan and cancellation

The city implemented the Integrated Downtown Plan (IDP), [37] a 30-year strategy guiding growth and investment until 2051. [38] This focuses on increasing education, employment, services for the neighborhood, while improving streetscapes and public areas to create an entrepreneurial environment.

In 2018, shortly after taking office, Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown scrapped the Downtown Reimagined initiative—a major revitalization project designed to modernize the neighbourhood. [37] As a result of the cancellation, urgent infrastructure work that was needed, caused disruptions [39] [40] and delayed the improvements to the downtown. [37]
