Background and release

SZA first announced a deluxe edition of her second studio album, SOS (2022), on social media upon the album's release. [2] She continued to reveal more details in 2023; in August, she told Variety that its tracklist would consist of scrapped songs alongside post-album tracks. [3] During promotion for SOS's final single "Snooze", SZA posted two behind-the-scenes clips of its music video on Instagram, each set to unreleased music. [4] One song was "Diamond Boy (DTM)", recorded the same year, [5] while another had a then-unknown name. It had the lyrics "I keep pretending, everyone's as good as me… All my exes still love me / Call me up, he wanna freak." [4] [6]

After a long series of delays, SZA revealed the release date of the deluxe edition, titled Lana, to be December 20, 2024. [7] The announcement came with a teaser for the track "Drive", the music video for which was to premiere on the same day. [8]

Music

"Drive" was produced by ThankGod4Cody and Billy Lemon. [9]

Music video

The music video was directed and edited by Bradley J. Calder. [10] It features filmmaker Ben Stiller, co-director of the science fiction TV series Severance . [11] Throughout the video, Stiller drives his car on an empty road at night, at one point sticking himself out of the window. Once he alights from the vehicle, the camera pans to a forest where SZA, dressed as a bug using black body paint and prosthetics, is shown. During the clip, a snippet of the Lana track "Crybaby" plays. [12] [13]
