Dumfries and Galloway is a county constituency in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It was first used in the 2005 general election, and replaced Galloway and Upper Nithsdale and part of Dumfries. It elects one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election. Despite its name, it does not cover the whole of the Dumfries and Galloway council area.
Edinburgh South is a constituency of the House of Commons of the UK Parliament created in 1885. The constituency has been held by Scottish Labour since 1987. The seat has been represented since 2010 by Ian Murray, who currently serves as Secretary of State for Scotland under the government of Keir Starmer. Murray was the only Labour MP in Scotland to retain his seat at the 2015 and 2019 general elections and this is one of only three seats never held by the Scottish National Party (SNP).

A prominent figure in the Scottish nationalist movement, he has served as Leader of the Alba Party since 2021. The Alba Party is a Scottish nationalist and pro-independence political party in Scotland, founded in February 2021. Having split from the Scottish National Party (SNP), it is led by former first minister of Scotland and SNP leader Alex Salmond. Salmond launched the party's 2021 Scottish Parliament election campaign in March 2021, with the party standing list-only candidates, after having being forced out of the SNP due to a sexual misconduct and assault scandal he was partially acquitted of. Two members of Parliament (MPs) in the UK House of Commons defected from the Scottish National Party (SNP) to the Alba Party on 27 March 2021, and member of the Scottish parliament Ash Regan defected on 28 October 2023. Several former SNP MPs also joined the Alba Party, which has only gained elected officials though defections.
