Eric George Tulsky (born 1974 or 1975) [1] is an American ice hockey executive and scientist who is the general manager of the Carolina Hurricanes of the National Hockey League (NHL).

Education and early career

Tulsky has a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry and physics from Harvard University. After completing his PhD in chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley, he worked for two years in postdoctoral study at the Naval Research Laboratory. [2] [3] He then worked in nanotechnology for ten years, including at Silicon Valley companies Life Technologies and QuantumScape. [3] [1] He holds 27 US patents as of 2024. [4]

Hockey career

In 2011, while he was still working in nanotechnology, Tulsky began writing for Philadelphia Flyers fan blog Broad Street Hockey. [5] Through SB Nation, he launched the blog Outnumbered. [3] Tulsky spoke at the 2013 MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference about his work with possession metrics, concluding that the dump-and-chase tactic was ineffective and that teams should prioritize controlled zone entries. Although he did not receive any job offers after the conference, teams began to embrace controlled entries in a way that he found "unlikely" to be coincidental. [6]

After publishing his work online, Tulsky began doing various consulting projects for NHL teams. [7] [8] His first consulting project was with the Nashville Predators during the 2012 offseason. [6] For the 2014–15 season, he was hired by the Carolina Hurricanes as a part-time analyst, working as a remote consultant for 20–25 hours per week. He was promoted to a full-time analyst in 2015, moving to Raleigh. [9] [10] [8] He was named head of hockey analytics in 2017, and in 2018 was promoted to vice president of hockey management and strategy. [11] [5] In January 2021, Tulsky was promoted to assistant general manager. [10]

While Tulsky has remained with the Hurricanes, he was interviewed for the position of general manager by the Chicago Blackhawks in 2022 [12] and the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2023. [13] On May 24, 2024, Tulsky was named interim general manager of the Hurricanes after the resignation of Don Waddell, who had spent six years in the role. [14] [2] In his first move in the position, he re-signed forward prospect Ryan Suzuki to a one-year, league-minimum contract extension. [15] On June 18, the Hurricanes announced that Tulsky had been officially hired as permanent general manager. [4]

Personal life

Tulsky was born in Port Huron, Michigan. He moved to Philadelphia at age four, becoming a fan of the Phillies and the Flyers. As a child, he was primarily a baseball fan. [1]

John Arthur Davidson is a Canadian-American professional ice hockey executive and former player, who currently serves as a senior advisor and alternate governor for the Columbus Blue Jackets of the National Hockey League (NHL). As a goaltender, he played in the NHL for the St. Louis Blues and New York Rangers, and helped the Rangers reach the 1979 Stanley Cup Finals. Davidson also briefly served as Columbus' interim general manager during the 2023–24 season.

Richard Clarence Dudley is a Canadian professional ice hockey executive, former coach and former player. Dudley is presently serving as a senior advisor for the Florida Panthers. Dudley has previously served as an executive with the Tampa Bay Lightning, Chicago Blackhawks, Atlanta Thrashers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens and Carolina Hurricanes. Dudley has also served as a head coach in the National Hockey League, American Hockey League and International Hockey League. Dudley played in the World Hockey Association and in the National Hockey League. Dudley grew up playing hockey in his hometown of Port Credit, Ontario.

Jeff Gorton is an American ice hockey executive currently serving as Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations of the Montreal Canadiens of the National Hockey League (NHL). He previously served six seasons as general manager of the New York Rangers between 2015-2021. Gorton was also the interim general manager of the Boston Bruins during the 2005–06 season, replacing Mike O'Connell, who was fired on March 25, 2006.

Darcy John Regier is a Canadian professional ice hockey executive and former player. Regier was general manager of the Buffalo Sabres in the National Hockey League from 1997 until 2013. He was the longest-serving and winningest GM in Sabres history. In 2014, he became a senior vice president and assistant general manager with the Arizona Coyotes, ending his tenure with Arizona in 2016. Regier played 26 games in the NHL for the Cleveland Barons and New York Islanders as a defenseman.

The 2024–25 NHL season is the upcoming 108th season of operation of the National Hockey League (NHL). The Arizona Coyotes franchise was deactivated and its players and personnel were transferred to a new expansion team in Utah. The regular season is scheduled to begin on October 4, 2024, when the Buffalo Sabres and New Jersey Devils are to play the first of two games in Prague, Czech Republic, as a part of the 2024 NHL Global Series. The Stanley Cup playoffs are then planned to begin in April 2025, ending with the Stanley Cup Finals in June.

The 2024–25 Carolina Hurricanes season will be the 46th season for the National Hockey League (NHL) franchise that was established in June 1979, and the 27th season since the franchise relocated from the Hartford Whalers to start the 1997–98 season.
