Marquette is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Marquette County. The population was 21,355 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city of the state's Upper Peninsula. Marquette is a major port on Lake Superior, known primarily for shipping iron ore, and is the home of Northern Michigan University. In 2012, Marquette was listed among the 10 best places to retire in the United States by CBS MoneyWatch.

The Pine Mountain Ski Jump is one of the highest artificially created ski jumps in the world, located in Iron Mountain, Michigan, Dickinson County. It is part of the Kiwanis Ski Club and hosts annual FIS Ski Jumping Continental Cup competitions. "Pine Mountain Slide is known throughout the world as one of the better jumping hills." Annually in February, it "hosts jumpers from around the world at the best tournament in the United States." Top-rated foreign jumpers compete. Currently Pine Mountain holds the U.S. records for the longest jump in World Cup competition at 140m, as well as the overall distance record at 143.5m. The facility also includes two smaller ski jumping hills that are built into the hill northwest of the large hill. Attendance is about 20,000.

Ore miners working on the Marquette Iron Range went on strike in July 1865, shortly after the end of the American Civil War. They were put down by a naval detachment from the USS Michigan, using an improvised armored train, and later with an army detachment from Chicago.
The SS Indiana was a freighter built in 1848. It was built with am 18-foot steam engine with an Erickson Screw Propeller. It served Lake Superior as a passenger ship and became a transporter for iron ore after the Soo Locks opened. It shipwrecked on June 6, 1858, at Crisp Point Light. The boat started leaking near the propeller shaft during a storm. It was carrying iron ore from Marquette, Michigan during the time of its accident.
