Eternal Return is the fifth studio album by ARIA award-winning Australian singer-songwriter Sarah Blasko. The album was released on 6 November 2015 through EMI in Australia and Amazon [1] in the US, and in the UK on 5 February 2016 through MVKA. [2] [3]
Having completed a world tour promoting her fourth studio album, I Awake (2012), as well as having contributed to various other musical projects, Sarah Blasko returned to the studio. [4] In March 2015 she announced via Twitter that she was completing her final week of recording for her new album. [5] By late April 2015 further details of the recording were announced on Blasko's website "The as yet untitled album will hopefully be released late in 2015, recorded at The Grove Studios on the NSW Central Coast by Engineer/Producer Burke Reid (Courtney Barnett, The Drones et al) & mixed by Welshman David Wrench (FKA twigs, Jack Ladder, Caribou, Seekae)." Later in 2015 while promoting Eternal Return, Sarah Blasko revealed to Sydney Morning Herald's Bernard Zuel that she was also expecting her first child during the recording of the album. She stated "It was [a matter of] 'hurry up, he wants to get out'," she says. "It felt like a very special, honest and open time.". [7]
In an interview with The Guardian Blasko further discussed her song writing process for the album citing a new relationship as an influence. "I wanted to write some love songs. There's other subject matter on there but there's no hiding it's about love – capturing the sensation at the time it was happening [to me] in its early fresh stages." [8]
Two tracks, 'I'd be Lost' and 'Only One', were made available on iTunes and music streaming services in the weeks before the release of Eternal Return. On 11 October Sarah Blasko performed songs from Eternal Return at the Sydney Opera House as part of the Graphic Festival. [9] On 4 November Sarah Blasko announced the dates for a tour that would include nine performances across Australia beginning in Canberra on 6 April 2016 and concluding in Perth on 30 April 2016. [6]
Six music videos were also released to promote Eternal Return. "I'd be Lost", "Only One", "I Wanna Be Your Man", "Without" and two versions of "Luxurious" were made available on Sarah Blasko's YouTube and Vevo channels. [10] [11] The videos for "I'd be Lost" and "Without" were also played on ABC TV's long running music program Rage. [12]
Eternal Return debuted at No. 6 on the Australian ARIA Charts. [13]
The album received significant praise from music critics.
The Guardian's Everett True who gave Eternal Return 5 out of 5 stars. True stated "This album feels epic, in the way Bruce Springsteen and Donna Summer once felt epic, back around the middle of the 70s, making sad, sensual anthems of everyday observation and desire that many people mistook for throwaway radio fodder." [14]
Ingmar Duldig of The AU Review applauded Blasko's positive approach to the topic of new love. [15]
Rolling Stone's Annabel Ross gave Eternal Return 4/5 stars and described it as "...a love album that's unequivocal in its declaration, but stylistically its position is less obvious, and much more interesting." [16]
Julie Palmer of The Hertfordshire Mercury recommended Eternal Return and described it, her first experience at hearing a Sarah Blasko album, as a delight. [2]

Sally Mary Seltmann, is an Australian singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and Record producer. From 2000 to 2009, Seltmann used the stage name, New Buffalo. Under that name, Seltmann wrote, performed, arranged and produced her debut album, The Last Beautiful Day in September 2004. Her second album, Somewhere, Anywhere appeared in March 2007. Seltmann and Canadian singer-songwriter Feist, co-wrote the song "1234" which was featured in a 2007 iPod Nano commercial. It became a Top 10 hit on the United States Billboard Hot 100 for Feist. Seltmann is married to Darren Seltmann formerly of electronic music group, The Avalanches. In April 2010, Seltmann released her third solo album, Heart That's Pounding. Late that year, she formed an indie rock trio, Seeker Lover Keeper, with fellow Australians Sarah Blasko and Holly Throsby. They issued a self-titled album in June 2011, which peaked at number three on the ARIA Albums Chart. In 2013, Seltmann released her fourth solo album, Hey Daydreamer. The Presets are an Australian electronic music duo of Julian Hamilton and Kim Moyes. Formed in 2003 and signed to Modular Records, The Presets released two EPs in advance of their debut album, Beams, released in 2005 to positive critical response. After two years of touring, including as the Australian support for Daft Punk, the band's 2008 release, Apocalypso, debuted at number one on the ARIA Albums Chart, and went on to win six awards at ARIA Awards 2008, including Album of the Year.
Jessica Hilda Mauboy is an Australian singer, songwriter and actress. Born and raised in Darwin, Northern Territory, she rose to fame in 2006 on the fourth season of Australian Idol, where she was runner-up and subsequently signed a recording contract with Sony Music Australia. After releasing a live album of her Idol performances and briefly being a member of the girl group Young Divas in 2007, Mauboy released her debut studio album, Been Waiting, the following year. Sarah Elizabeth Blaskow, known professionally as Sarah Blasko, is an Australian singer, songwriter, musician and record producer. From April 2002, Blasko developed her solo career after fronting Sydney-based band, Acquiesce, between the mid-1990s and 2001. She had performed under her then married name, Sarah Semmens, and, after leaving Acquiesce, as Sorija in a briefly existing duo of that name. As a solo artist Blasko has released six studio albums, The Overture & the Underscore, What the Sea Wants, the Sea Will Have – which peaked at No. 7 on the ARIA Albums Chart, As Day Follows Night – which reached No. 5, I Awake – which made No. 9, Eternal Return, and Depth of Field.
Seeker Lover Keeper was an Australian indie rock music supergroup formed by Sarah Blasko, Sally Seltmann and Holly Throsby in August 2010. The trio each have separate solo careers as singer-songwriters. The group's first album, which was self-titled, was released on 3 June 2011 through Dew Process/UMA.
Abbe Joanna May is an Australian singer-songwriter, musician and human rights campaigner. From 2002 she pursued her music career in Perth-based groups, The Fuzz, Abbe May and the Rockin' Pneumonia, and The Devil & Abbe May. In 2010 she began to perform as Abbe May and released her solo album, Design Desire, in July 2011. She followed with Kiss My Apocalypse in May 2013. Mauboy's first music video was for the album's lead single "Running Back" featuring American rapper Flo Rida. It was directed by Fin Edquist and portrayed a fictional relationship between Mauboy and Flo Rida. At the 2009 MTV Australia Awards, the video was nominated for Best Collaboration. Keir McFarlane directed the music videos for the following singles, "Burn" and the title track "Been Waiting". The music video for the fifth single "Up/Down" was directed by Sequoia and shot in Los Angeles.
