Founded in 1990 in Rome, the European Society for the Study of English (ESSE) is the largest and most comprehensive organization for university teachers and researchers in English Studies, including literature, linguistics, and cultural studies, throughout Europe. [2] It is an association (Verein) conformable to articles 60ff of the Swiss Civil Code (ZGB) with its seat in Basle. [3] As stated in the 2022 ESSE Treasurer's Report for the ESSE Board Meeting in Mainz, 28 August 2022 (p. 4), currently, ESSE has 33 national associations and, according to the November 2021 membership lists, there are 7,590 members of ESSE.

ESSE is a European federation of national higher educational associations for the study of English. ESSE is a member of The International Federation for Modern Languages and Literatures (FILLM). [5] [6]

President, Executive, and Board

The past Presidents of ESSE have been Piero Boitani (1990–95), Helmut Bonheim (1995–2001), Adolphe Haberer (2001–07), Fernando Galván (2007–13) and Liliane Louvel (2013–19). [7] Today, the President of ESSE is Prof. Andreas H. Jucker (University of Zurich, Switzerland). The President leads an Executive which also includes a Secretary (Professor Biljana Mišić Ilić, University of Niš, Serbia) and Treasurer (Professor Gašper Ilc, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia). [8] The Executive meets regularly with the ESSE Board, which consists of representatives from each of the national organizations.

Activities

Conforming to its Constitution (4. Activities), [3] the activities of ESSE include providing a network for communication between individuals working in English Studies, publication of journals, allocation of bursaries and book prizes to outstanding works in the field of English studies, and organization of regular international conferences. [3] Therefore, one of ESSE's main aims is to assist young scholars in different countries with documentation and resourcing. In this respect, ESSE offers a bursary scheme to help support young academics, and provides book grants to researchers. ESSE also awards prizes to junior and senior scholars for books they wrote in the field of English studies (literature, language, cultural and area studies). Besides, ESSE offers financial support for parallel lecture speakers at ESSE conferences and for plenary speakers at national conferences of affiliated national associations. [2] [9] In parallel, ESSE also organises a Doctoral Symposium, open to PhD students who are writing their theses in English Studies. [10]

Publications

As stipulated in its Constitution (4.3), [3] ESSE is the editor of a biannual publication which was issued as a newsletter under the name TheEuropean English Messenger, in printed format (1990-2015). [11] [12] In 2016 it became an online publication, an academic journal [13] renamed The ESSE Messenger . [14] ESSE also edits TheEuropean Journal of English Studies, published by Routledge.

Conferences

The Society holds biennial conferences with approximately 400-700 participants (cf. Constitution 4.1). [3] The ESSE conferences consist of plenary and parallel lectures, seminars, round tables, and other events covering all aspects of English Studies including literature, linguistics and cultural and area studies. [3] ESSE conferences have taken place so far in: [15] Norwich (1991), Bordeaux (1993), Glasgow (1995), Debrecen (1997), Helsinki (2000), Strasbourg (2002), Zaragoza (2004), London (2006) , Aarhus (2008), Turin (2010), Istanbul (2012), Kosice (2014), Galway (2016), Brno (2018), Lyon (2020, postponed to 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic) and Mainz (2022). The next ESSE conference will take place in Lausanne in 2024.

Applied linguistics is a practical use of language.

<i>Aktiengesellschaft</i> Type of business entity in German-speaking countries

Aktiengesellschaft is a German word for a corporation limited by share ownership whose shares may be traded on a stock market. The term is used in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and South Tyrol for companies incorporated there. It is also used in Luxembourg, although the equivalent French language term société anonyme is more common. In the United Kingdom, the equivalent term is public limited company and in the United States while the terms "incorporated" or "corporation" are typically used, technically the more precise equivalent term is "joint-stock company".

The National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) is a United States professional organization dedicated to "improving the teaching and learning of English and the language arts at all levels of education. Since 1911, NCTE has provided a forum for the profession, an array of opportunities for teachers to continue their professional growth throughout their careers, and a framework for cooperation to deal with issues that affect the teaching of English." In addition, the NCTE describes its mission as follows:

The Council promotes the development of literacy, the use of language to construct personal and public worlds and to achieve full participation in society, through the learning and teaching of English and the related arts and sciences of language.

The European Association of History Educators (EuroClio) was established in 1992 with the support of the Council of Europe. The NGO works as a European wide facilitator for innovation and progress in history Education. The organisation contributes not only to the development, but also on the actual implementation of regional, national and European long-term projects, which focus on establishing knowledge, experience and expertise in the countries by training and consulting teachers. EuroClio develops teaching materials, builds and maintains professional Networks and acts as advisor to governments, international organisations, NGOs, History Teacher Associations and other Organisations. EuroClio is supported by the Europe for Citizens Programme of the European Union and has, for many years, Official Participatory Status and is part of the EU Stake Holder's Network in Education and Training.

This is not to be confused with English taught as a foreign language, which is a distinct discipline. An Anglicist is someone who works in the field of English studies. Claire Elaine Jowitt is an English academic who writes on race, cross-gender, piracy, identity, empire and performance. She is currently a Professor in English and History within the Schools of History and Literature, Drama and Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia. The European Association for the Teaching of Academic Writing (EATAW) is an academic association supporting scholarly activity in academic writing. The association was first established in 1999 with the first conference being held in 2001. The Europe-wide association has two main activities: a bi-annual conference, and the Journal of Academic Writing.

The European Educational Research Association (EERA) is association of national and regional associations representing educational researchers in Europe. EERA aims to encourage collaboration amongst educational researchers in Europe, promote communication between educational researchers and international governmental organisations and disseminate and highlight state-of-the-art findings of educational research, primarily through the annual European Conference on Educational Research (ECER) and its associated journal, the European Educational Research Journal (EERJ), the EERA Blog and the EERA Book Series - Transdisciplinary Perspectives in Educational Research.

The American Literature Association (ALA) is "a coalition of societies devoted to the study of American authors". It has some 110 affiliated societies, mostly concerned with the work of a particular author, some thematic such as the Society of Early Americanists. It was founded in 1989.

The International Society for the Linguistics of English (ISLE), founded in 2008, is a learned society of linguists. The organization's goals are to promote the study of the English Language at an international level, with a particular focus on the structure and history of standard as well as the many non-standard varieties of English, examining both their form and function. To that end, the society aims to provide a geographically and theoretically neutral central contact point for scholars who identify with these aims by including both academic linguists and members of the educated public who have an interest in English linguistics. The society allows scholars the opportunity convene beyond borders of members' country-specific professional societies. Any person may become an ISLE member by contacting the Secretary and paying dues.

The Association of Writers of Yugoslavia or the Yugoslav Writer's Union was an umbrella organisation of 6 of the constituent republics' writers associations in the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. The Association coordinated cooperation between its member organizations. From 1965 onwards, the Association was transformed into a coordination body of its members at the time; the Association of Writers of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Association of Writers of Montenegro, the Croatian Writers' Association, the Association of Writers of Serbia, Association of Writers of Macedonia and the Slovene Writers' Association. Ivo Andrić was unanimously elected as the first president of the Association in 1946.
