The FIDE Grand Swiss Tournament 2025 will be a chess tournament organized by FIDE, chess's international governing body, in September 2025. It forms part of the qualification cycle for the World Chess Championship 2026. It will be an 11-round Swiss-system tournament. The winner and runner-up of the tournament will earn the right to play in the Candidates Tournament 2026. [2] The Women’s section will be held in parallel at the same time and venue, and its top two finishers will qualify for the Women's Candidates Tournament. [3] [4]
The tournament has an 11-round Swiss format featuring 116 players. [5]
The games use a classical time control of 100 minutes for the first 40 moves, then 50 minutes for the next 20 moves, then 15 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30 second increment from move 1.
Tie-breaks between players who finish on the same score will be determined, in order, by the following tie-breaks:
The tournament is scheduled to take place September 3-15, 2025 in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. [1]
116 players will participate in the FIDE Grand Swiss. [6] The original regulations approved by FIDE Council stated 114 would qualify: 100 by rating, the Women's World Champion, 4 Continential spots, 5 presidential and 5 Organizer's nominees. [7] However, FIDE has changed the regulations on their website and added 2 presidential nominees. FIDE did not explain the change. [8] In the player list, 101 rating qualifiers and 6 presidential nominees appear.
