Farma (English: The Farm) is a Croatian reality television series based on The Farm. The series follows a group of participants living on a farm and competing for a cash prize in an elimination-based format.

Contents

Farma debuted on Nova TV on 9 March 2008 as the first HDTV program to be broadcast in Croatia. [1] The series concluded its run on Nova TV on 30 December 2020 with the finale of the seventh season. [2]

In May 2024, RTL announced a revival of Farma and is set to broadcast the eighth overall season of the series. [3]

Production

Format

A group of contestant is placed on a rural farm where they have to live in an isolation. Contestants leave the farm via eliminations; the winner ultimately receives a monetary prize.

Hosts

On Nova TV, Mia Kovačić hosted all seasons but the second one, with various co-hosts joining her throughout the years. [4]

Seasons 1–3 (2008-2010): Celebrity edition

The first three seasons ran on Nova TV from 2008 to 2010 and utilized a celebrity format; the contestants were notable television, media and other personalities. The winners of the first three seasons were Rafael Dropulić, Mario Mlinarić and Kristijan Kiki Rahimovski respectively. [7]

Seasons 4–7 (2015–2020)

After a hiatus, the series returned to Nova TV in September 2015. [8] Unlike in the previous three seasons, the contestant were not celebrities. The fourth season was titled Novi početak (English: New Beginning), and the fifth season, debuting in September 2016, was titled Dvije Farme (English: Two Farms) with contestants being placed on two different farms. [9] A sixth season followed two years later, premiering in September 2018. [10]

After another two-year hiatus, the seventh season aired on Nova TV under the title Farma: More i Maslina (English: Farma: The Sea and the Olive) from October to December 2020. [6] The winner of More i Maslina was Tomislav Pavlović. [2]

Season 8: RTL revival

In May 2024, RTL announced a revival of the series. The applications for aspiring participants to apply were opened the same month. A cash prize of €50,000 will be offered to the winner. [3]

Reception

Ratings

During its first two seasons, the series was broadcast in prime time for 13 weeks, six days in a week, and was the highest rated show of the season.[ citation needed ]

According to Nova TV, the fifth season, broadcast from September to December 2016, had an average of 570,000 viewers. [10]

Presidential elections were held in Croatia on 28 December 2014 and 11 January 2015, the sixth such elections since independence in 1991. Only four candidates contested the elections, the lowest number since 1997. Incumbent president Ivo Josipović, who had been elected as the candidate of the Social Democratic Party in 2009–2010, was eligible to seek reelection for a second and final five-year term and ran as an independent. As no candidate received 50% of the vote in the first round in December 2014, a run-off took place in January 2015 between the two candidates with the most votes, Josipović and Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović. Grabar-Kitarović went on to win the elections by a slim margin of 32,509 votes or 1.48%, making her Croatia's first female president.

The second season of Farma, a Croatian reality television series based on The Farm, premiered on 1 March 2009 on Nova TV. The winner of the second season was Mario Mlinarić who won 324,000 kuna from the prize.

The third season of Farma, a Croatian reality television series based on The Farm, started on 21 March 2010 and finished on 18 June 2010. Nikolina Pišek and Mia Kovačić served as hosts with Davor Dretar Drele returning after a one-season break as a co-host. The winner Kristijan Kiki Rahimovski received 269.000 kuna from the prize.

The fourth season of the Croatian reality television series Farma, titled Farma: Novi Početak, premiered on 6 September 2015 on Nova TV. It is the first season since 2010 and also first season to not feature celebrities. Mia Kovačić returns as host and Josip Tučkorić - Joža returnes as mentor. Davor Dretar Drele, former co-host, is replaced by Dušan Bučan. This is also the first season to not feature the studio a reportage and live duels.

The sixth season of Croatian reality television series Farma premiered on 16 September 2018 and featured 18 new farmers. Mia Kovačić remained as the main host and Josip Tučkorić - Joža remained as mentor. Davor Dretar Drele returned to the show replacing Dušan Bučan as co-host. This season has a few changes, such as the winner of the duel receiving immunity for the next week.
