The Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM) is a private college in downtown Los Angeles.
The college was founded in 1969 by Tonian Hohberg, the institute's president and CEO. [1] [2] In 2023, Arizona State University (ASU) announced that the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in downtown Los Angeles will be part of the expansion of ASU's fashion education program, which will now be named ASU FIDM, and will operate in both Los Angeles and Phoenix. [3]
The college offers 26 associate degree programs; a Bachelor of Science degree in business management, which is also available via distance learning; and nine Bachelor of Arts degree programs. The college also offers a master's in business administration degree. [2]
The college is accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission. [4] Due to a commission review finding problems in sustainability and faculty oversight in 2019, status has changed from "Accredited" to "Accredited with Notice of Concern". [5] It is also an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). [6]
In addition to its Los Angeles campus, the college previously had three satellite campuses located in San Francisco, Orange County, and San Diego. [7]
The main campus is the Los Angeles campus. The campus features the modern architecture of Clive Wilkinson, [8] [9] [10] [11] innovative study spaces, a design studio, and the FIDM Museum and Galleries.
The San Francisco campus was located in Union Square. [12] The Orange County Campus had lofts, an indoor/outdoor student lounge, bright colors, and a unique audiovisual igloo.
FIDM served as the location of Lifetime's Project Runway season six, [13] Project Runway: Under the Gunn , [14] Project Runway: Threads , [15] and Project Runway: Junior . Several FIDM alumni, including Santino Rice, Daniel Franco, Guadalupe Vidal, Kelli Martin, and Leann Marshall, were contestants on the original Project Runway show. [16] FIDM was also featured in the MTV show The Hills , which shows the life of upcoming fashion designer, Lauren Conrad, who comes from Laguna Beach and wants to become famous for her designs. [17]
The Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising Museum, located at the Los Angeles Campus, is home to a large collection of fashion and costume pieces from the 1800s to today. The museum features permanent and temporary exhibits, including costumes and designs from early 20th-century Hollywood, theater, and current television shows and films. Currently, the art of costume design in television is being displayed until the start of November 2022. The FIDM Museum Permanent Collection features more than 15,000 objects representing over 200 years of fashion, spanning haute couture, ready-to-wear, international ensembles, film costumes, and fragrance. Highlights of the collection include the Lilli Ann, Michael Arnaud, Damask Cecil Beaton, Nancy Dinsmore, Rudi Gernreich, Stella Hanania, Helen Larson, Tina Leser, Maurice Levin, and Gianni Versace Menswear archives. Due to COVID-19 concerns, the FIDM Museum Los Angeles and Orange County galleries are now closed. It is possible to browse the FIDM online collections. [21] [22]

The FIDM Museum & Library, Inc. was founded in 1978 to serve the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM) and the community. Since January 1999, the museum's operations have been separate from the Library in order to offer more specialized care and attention to the specific needs of a costume collection, and museum-trained personnel have been added to the staff. Admission to the museum is free and is frequented by fashion design students or those who enjoy textile art.

Rucci's clothing designs have appeared in a number of major exhibitions, and he has won some significant fashion-industry awards. The Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona was created in 2009 by the merger of two existing academic units, the Katherine K. Herberger College of the Arts and the College of Design. The Arizona Board of Regents approved the merger on April 30, 2009. The Herberger Institute comprises six schools: ASU FIDM; the School of Art; the School of Arts, Media and Engineering; The Design School; The New American Film School; and the School of Music, Dance and Theatre. Clive Wilkinson is an architect and interior designer. Acknowledged as a pioneer in workplace design by the IIDA, Wilkinson is perhaps best known for designing the interior of one of the buildings in the Googleplex, the headquarters of Google in Silicon Valley. He has also designed several top global advertising agencies, including JWT in New York City, and Mother Advertising in London. Wilkinson's introduction of urban planning concepts to organize and animate large office projects began with the design of TBWA\Chiat\Day's Los Angeles headquarters in 1998.

Tumbler and Tipsy is a brand of clothing and accessories founded by Michael Kuluva in 2009. Kuluva graduated from Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising with a degree in fashion design in 2012. Tumbler and Tipsy by Michael Kuluva became the first fashion designer label to collaborate with a video game software company, Ubisoft to design high end garments for the New York Fashion Week Spring 2013 runway.

Guest judges included: Heidi Klum, Neil Patrick Harris, Macklemore, Jaimie Alexander, Zoey Deutch, Zendaya, Georgina Chapman, Sarah Hyland, Trina Turk, and Wendy Partridge.
Project Runway: Threads is a spin-off reality competition based on Project Runway. It premiered October 23, 2014 on Lifetime. The series features skilled teen and tween fashion designers.
Kevan Hall is an American fashion designer best known for his celebrity red carpet dresses and his role as the design and creative director of Halston (1997–2000). In 2001, he launched his eponymous brand, Kevan Hall Signature that includes couture evening wear, women's pret-a-porter suits, accessories, and luxury home goods. His collections have been worn by Anne Hathaway, Naomi Campbell, Celine Dion, Michelle Obama, Vanessa Williams, Charlize Theron, Viola Davis, and more. In 2018, Hall co-founded the non-profit organization Black Design Collective, alongside costume designer Ruth E. Carter.
