Fayland Chalk Bank is a 0.6-hectare (1.5-acre) Site of Special Scientific Interest in Parmoor, south of Lane End in Buckinghamshire. It is in the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. [1] [2]
The site is chalk grassland which has a diverse flora. The main grasses are red fescue, quaking grass and yellow oat grass. Orchids include the common spotted and pyramidal, and the profusion of chalk flowers and its south facing location make the site important for bees, grasshoppers and butterflies. [1]
The site is on private land with no public access.
Whitehorse Hill is a hill in the Berkshire Downs in Oxfordshire, England, west of Wantage. At 261 metres (856 ft), it is the highest point in Oxfordshire. Uffington Castle lies on the summit of the hill, and the Uffington White Horse is on the hill's northern slope. The hill and an adjacent area below, including Dragon Hill and The Manger, make up a 98.9-hectare (244-acre) biological and geological Site of Special Scientific Interest.
Chipstead Downs is a 157.8-hectare (390-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest south-east of Banstead in Surrey, England. Part of it is Park Downs, which is managed by the Banstead Commons Conservators.
Hollingbourne Downs is a 60.9-hectare (150-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest east of Maidstone in Kent.
Castle Lime Works Quarry is a 1.6 hectare geological Site of Special Scientific Interest near South Mimms in Hertfordshire. The site was notified in 1986 under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. The site is a disused chalk quarry and according to Natural England:
Quarry Hangers is a 28.5-hectare (70-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest south-west of Caterham in Surrey. An area of 11 hectares is a nature reserve managed by the Surrey Wildlife Trust.
Woldingham and Oxted Downs is a 128.4-hectare (317-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest east of Caterham in Surrey.
Water End Swallow Holes is a biological site of Special Scientific Interest in Hertfordshire, south-east England. Located in Welham Green and under the planning authority of Welwyn Hatfield District Council, it has an area of 11.3 hectares.
Aston Rowant National Nature Reserve is located on the north-west escarpment of the Chiltern Hills, in the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It has an area of 159.1 hectares, and most of it is a 128.5 hectares biological Site of Special Scientific Interest. It is listed as a Grade 1 site in A Nature Conservation Review. The reserve is in several sections, mostly in the parish of Lewknor in Oxfordshire, with smaller sections in the parish of Stokenchurch in Buckinghamshire.
Roughdown Common is a 3.6-hectare (8.9-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest in Hemel Hempstead in Hertfordshire. The planning authority is Dacorum Borough Council. The site is Common land, and it is owned by the Box Moor Trust having been officially brought by the trust in April 1886 from the Dean and Chapter of St Paul's. It is part of the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Common is a steeply sloping chalk hill in south Hemel Hempstead.
Homefield Wood is a 6.1-hectare (15-acre) Site of Special Scientific Interest in Hambleden in Buckinghamshire. It is owned by the Forestry Commission, and managed by the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust. It is part of the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Dancersend Waterworks is a 4 hectare biological Site of Special Scientific Interest in Spencersgreen south of Aston Clinton in Buckinghamshire. It was formerly a private waterworks supplying the Rothschild Dancersend estate, and is now owned by Thames Water. It is in the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. A cooling pond within the Thames Water site is a Grade II listed building.
Wormsley Chalk Banks are six separate areas which together are a 14.1-hectare (35-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest near Turville in Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire. The site is in the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Aston Rowant Woods is a 209.7-hectare (518-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest near Aston Rowant in Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire. Part of it is in Aston Rowant National Nature Reserve, and a large part is in the Chiltern Beechwoods Special Area of Conservation. The site is also in the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
South Lodge Pit is a 0.5-hectare (1.2-acre) geological Site of Special Scientific Interest in Taplow in Buckinghamshire. It is a Geological Conservation Review site.
Down Bank is a 5.9-hectare (15-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest south-west of Canterbury in Kent.
Papercourt Marshes is a 10-hectare (25-acre) nature reserve in the south-east of the borough of Woking in Surrey. It is managed by the Surrey Wildlife Trust. A roughly 50 hectares lake and associated surrounds, including the marshes totalling 20.0 hectares is designated a biological Site of Special Scientific Interest as Papercourt.
Levin Down is a 25.6-hectare (63-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest south of Midhurst in West Sussex. It is managed by the Sussex Wildlife Trust.
Chinnor Chalk Pit is a 20.4-hectare (50-acre) geological Site of Special Scientific Interest south of Chinnor in Oxfordshire. It is a Geological Conservation Review site.
Shirburn Hill is a 63.7-hectare (157-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest just outside and to the northeast of Watlington, Oxfordshire.
Warren Bank is a 3.1-hectare (7.7-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest south-east of Wallingford in Oxfordshire. It is managed by the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust.
