Fonda Lee (born March 10, 1979) is a Canadian-American [1] author of speculative fiction. She is best known for writing The Green Bone Saga, the first of which, Jade City , [2] won the 2018 World Fantasy Award and was named one of the 100 Best Fantasy Books of All Time by Time magazine. [3] [4] The Green Bone Saga was also included on NPR's list, "50 Favorite Sci-Fi and Fantasy Books of the Past Decade". [5]
Lee was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, Canada and currently resides in Portland, Oregon in the United States. [1] [6] She attended Stanford University where she earned her MBA. [6] Before becoming a full-time writer, she worked as a corporate strategist. [1] Lee is a martial artist and has earned black belts in karate and kung fu. [1] [6]
Lee's debut young adult science fiction novel, Zeroboxer, was published by Flux Books and nominated for the 2016 Andre Norton Award. [7] It received positive reviews from Publishers Weekly and Kirkus Reviews , which described it as "top-notch science fiction and a great sports novel too". [8] [9]
Lee's Exo series for young adults was published by Scholastic beginning in 2017 with the first volume, Exo, which was well received by critics, was nominated for the 2017 Andre Norton Award, and won the 2018 Aurora Award for Best YA Novel in a tie. Her 2017 short story "Old Souls", was published in Where the Stars Rise: Asian Science Fiction & Fantasy, and was nominated for the 2018 Aurora Award for Best Short Fiction and the 2018 World Fantasy Award for Best Short Fiction. [17] [18] Her 2020 short story, "I (28M) Created a Deepfake Girlfriend and Now My Parents Think We're Getting Married", was nominated for the 2020 Locus Award for Best Short Story. [19]
Her debut novel for adults, Jade City , the first in The Green Bone Saga, was published by Orbit Books in 2017 to critical acclaim. In 2020, it was announced that a TV series based on Jade City was being developed at Peacock, with Lee serving as a consulting producer. [37] In July 2022, it was announced that Peacock had canceled the project, but Lee shared on Twitter that the team were seeking another service to take it up. [38]
Lee's new fantasy novella Untethered Sky was published by Tor.com in April 2023. [39] [40]
In December 2022, Lee announced that she was collaborating with Shannon Lee (no relation), the daughter of the late actor and martial artist Bruce Lee, on a series of young adult fantasy novels inspired by Bruce Lee's writings called the Guardian of the Scroll duology. [41] The first book will be published in January 2025 by Wednesday Books acquired the rights to the series and plans to publish the first book in 2024. [42]
In March 2023, Orbit Books announced that it had acquired the rights to Fonda Lee's "cyberpunk samurai space opera" novel The Last Contract of Isako, which is scheduled for winter 2025. [43]

Martha Wells is an American writer of speculative fiction. Naomi Novik is an American author of speculative fiction. She is known for the Temeraire series (2006–2016), an alternate history of the Napoleonic Wars involving dragons, and her Scholomance fantasy series (2020–2022). Her standalone fantasy novels Uprooted (2015) and Spinning Silver (2018) were inspired by Polish folklore and the Rumpelstiltskin fairy tale respectively. Ann Leckie is an American author of science fiction and fantasy. Sarah Pinsker is an American science fiction and fantasy author. She is a nine-time finalist for the Nebula Award, and her debut novel A Song for a New Day won the 2019 Nebula for Best Novel while her story "Our Lady of the Open Road won the 2016 Nebula Award for Best Novelette. Her novelette "Two Truths and a Lie" received both the Nebula Award and the Hugo Award. Her fiction has also won the Philip K. Sam J. Miller is an American science fiction, fantasy and horror short fiction author. His stories have appeared in publications such as Clarkesworld, Asimov's Science Fiction, and Lightspeed, along with over 15 "year's best" story collections. He was finalist for multiple Nebula Awards along with the World Fantasy and Theodore Sturgeon Awards. He won the 2013 Shirley Jackson Award for his short story "57 Reasons for the Slate Quarry Suicides." Rebecca F. Kuang is an American fantasy novelist. Her first novel, The Poppy War, was released in 2018, followed by the sequels The Dragon Republic in 2019, and The Burning God in 2020. Kuang released a stand-alone novel, Babel, or the Necessity of Violence in 2022. Her latest release is Yellowface, a satirical novel which was published in 2023. Jade War is a 2019 fantasy novel by Fonda Lee published by Orbit and is the sequel to Jade City. It follows the island of Kekon as the jade-controlling clans are embroiled in an international war where jade is the centerpiece. The story takes place over several years. It is the second book in the Green Bone saga, followed by 2021's Jade Legacy, the final novel in the series.

It is the third and final novel in The Green Bone Saga, which began with Jade City (2017), and follows the surviving players from the end of Jade War (2019) as they plot a path for peace between nations and within Janloon's competing tribes, The Mountain Clan and No Peak Clan, over jade distribution. Jade Legacy was well-received critically and won the 2022 Locus Award for Best Fantasy Novel and the 2022 Aurora Award for Best Novel.
Cherae Clark, also known under the pen name C. L. Clark, is an American author and editor of speculative fiction, a personal trainer, and an English teacher. She graduated from Indiana University's creative writing MFA and was a 2012 Lambda Literary Fellow. Their debut novel, The Unbroken, first book of the Magic of the Lost trilogy, was published by Orbit Books in 2021 and received critical acclaim, including starred reviews at Publishers Weekly and Library Journal. The Unbroken was a Finalist for the 2021 Nebula Award for Best Novel, the 2022 Robert Holdstock Award for Best Fantasy Novel from the British Fantasy Awards, the 2022 Ignyte Award for Best Novel - Adult, and the 2022 Locus Award for Best First Novel.
