History

In 1888, Kentuckian chaplain Allen Allensworth moved with his regiment to Fort Bayard, becoming a military educator. In 1889, Allensworth published the pamphlet Outline of Course of Study, andThe Rules Governing Post Schools of Ft. Bayard, N.M., [3] which became a military education standard. [4]

Also in 1888, United States Army officer Geoffrey Keyes was born in Fort Bayard; he would become significant for his time in Italy during World War II.

In 1926, Supreme Court judge Harry Stowers was born in Fort Bayard. [5]

Allen Allensworth was an American chaplain, colonel, city founder, and theologian. Born into slavery in Kentucky, he escaped during the American Civil War by joining the 44th Illinois Volunteers as a Union soldier. After being ordained as a Baptist minister, he worked as a teacher, led several churches, and was appointed as a chaplain in the United States Army. In 1886, he gained appointment as a military chaplain to a unit of Buffalo Soldiers in the West, becoming the first African American to reach the rank of lieutenant colonel. He served in the US Army for 20 years, retiring in 1906.

Antelope Wells is a small unincorporated community in Hidalgo County, New Mexico, United States. The community is located along the Mexico-United States border, in the New Mexico Bootheel region, located across the border from the small settlement of El Berrendo, Chihuahua, Mexico. Despite its name, there are neither antelope nor wells in the area. The name comes from an old ranch, located 2.5 miles (4.0 km) north of the current community. The only inhabitants of the community are U.S. Customs and Border Protection employees.
