The French Martini was invented in the 1980s at one of Keith McNally's New York City bars. It next appeared on the drinks menu at McNally's Balthazar in SoHo in 1996. The cocktail was produced during the 1980s-1990s cocktail Renaissance. The key ingredient that makes a Martini "French" is Chambord, a black raspberry liqueur that has been produced in France since 1685. [1]

McNally has been active in the New York City restaurant scene since the 1980s. In that time, he has opened several restaurants. Balthazar is a French brasserie restaurant located at 80 Spring Street in SoHo in Manhattan, in New York City. It opened on April 21, 1997, and is owned by restaurateur Keith McNally. McNally joked that the best offer he had received for a reservation was to not break McNally's legs.

Noilly Prat is a brand of vermouth from France, owned by the Italian company Martini & Rossi. "White" Noilly Prat is the archetype of dry, straw-coloured French vermouth. Noilly Prat now makes Red and Ambre vermouths as well, introduced in the 1960s and 1980s, but they are less widely known. Noilly Prat Dry is 18% alcohol by volume. A bijou is a mixed alcoholic drink composed of gin, vermouth, and chartreuse. This cocktail was invented by Harry Johnson, "the father of professional bartending", who called it bijou because it combined the colors of three jewels: gin for diamond, vermouth for ruby, and chartreuse for emerald. An original-style bijou is made stirred with ice as Johnson's 1900 New and Improved Bartender Manual states "mix well with a spoon and serve."
