Gangu Teli or Ganga Teli is a king from India belonging to the Teli (oil-presser) caste. He appears in the proverb Kahaan Raja Bhoj, Kahaan Gangu Teli ("Where is the king Bhoja, and where is the oilman Gangu"), which is used to compare an important or high-status person (such as Bhoja) to an ordinary or low-status person (such as Gangu). Many Indian languages feature the proverb comparing Bhoja and Gangu Teli (or an equivalent character). Besides "Gangu" and "Ganga", several variants of the name of the Teli ("oilman") appear in different languages and dialects. For example, Bhojva (Bhojpuri), Bhunjva (Bagheli) Doontha (Bundeli), Kāngla (Braj), Kangda (Haryanvi), Ganglo (Rajasthani), Gangva (Kumaoni), Gangaram (Bengali), and Ganga (Marathi). [3]

In Kashmiri, the proverb changed into "Yetih Raja Bhoj, Tatih Ganga Teli", equivalent of the Hindi "Jahān Rājā Bhoj, Vahān Gaṃgā Telī" ("Ganga Teli is wherever Raja Bhoj is"). [4] [5]
In Telugu language, the equivalent phrase is Nakka ekkada, nagalokam ekkada? ("Where is the jackal and where is heaven?"). [2]
According to scholar P.K. Gode, in Marathi language, the source of the proverb seems to be the Sanskrit-language text Kalpa-druma-kalika, a commentary on the Jain text Kalpa-sutra . The commentary is of uncertain date, but Gode dates its extant manuscript to earlier than 1650 CE, based on appearance. The Kalpa-druma-kalika narrates the story of Bhoja and Ganga-Teli as follows: [6]
According to Gode, the antiquity of the proverb in Hindi and other north Indian languages is uncertain, and possibly other Jain texts contained a similar story. [6]
Maive Stokes, in Indian Fairy Tales (1880), records a story titled Raja Harichand's Punishment. In this story, a divine punishment forces king Harichand and his queen to go into exile as destitutes. While wandering, they go to their friend Ganga Teli, who had provided them with a comfortable stay during their earlier visit. However, this time, because of their poor appearance, Ganga Teli provides them with unpleasant rooms and bad food. Next, they go to their other friend, king Bhoj, who treats them well. [7]
Ganga Datt Upreti, in Proverbs and Folklore of Kumaun and Garhwal (1894), records another story about the origin of the proverb: Ganga and Bhoja were rival kings. Bhoja subjugated Ganga, seized his kingdom, had his limbs cut off. An oilman (teli) found Ganga, had him healed, and employed him. After the oilman's death, Ganga inherited his house and business. Even after becoming a handicapped oilman, Ganga continued to oppose Bhoja, inviting ridicule from people who declared that Gangu teli is not worthy of being compared to king Bhoja. [8]
Historian Kashinath Krishna Lele, in The Paramāras of Dhār and Mālwā (1908), suggested that the proverb referred to the Paramara king Bhoja's military success against "Gangeya of Telangana", the Telangana region being subordinate to the Kalachuri king Gangeya (Ganga or Gangu). [9] Historian R. Nath similarly connects the proverb to Bhoja's success against "Gangeya of Telingana". [10]
Maharashtra-Vaksampradaya (1942), a dictionary of Marathi proverbs, states that Gangu (or Ganga) in the proverb refers to the Kalyani Chalukya king Tailapa II ("Gangaraja Tailapa") and Bhoj refers to the Paramara king Munja, the uncle of Bhoja. P.K. Gode finds this explanation unsatisfactory, noting that while Tailapa II had killed Munja in the late 10th century, it is not clear if "Gangaraja" was an epithet of Tailapa or how Munja can be identified with his nephew Bhoja. Y. R. Date and C. G. Karve, the editors of the dictionary, do not cite any source for the explanation. [6] Some other historians, such as K. M. Munshi and K. N. Seth, similarly speculate that the proverb may have originated as an allusion to the military successes of Bhoja against Gangeya and the Kalyani Chalukyas who controlled the Telangana region, "Teli" being a corrupt form of "Telangana". [1] [11]
Ambedkarite author S. Anand states that according to "official history", when king Bhoj faced a problem during the construction of the Panhala Fort, a priest (pandit) suggested a double human sacrifice - of a mother and her newborn child - as the solution. Gangu Teli is said to have 'volunteered' to sacrifice his wife Jakkubai and their newborn. Anand states that the fort has a small tomb for Jakkubai. [12] He identifies king Bhoj as the "eleventh-century ruler of the Malwa region" (the Paramara king), [12] but the Panhala fort was actually built by the Shilahara king Bhoja II. [13]
Several modern interpreters consider the phrase as casteist, since the Teli community historically held a low status in the traditional caste hierarchy. Sumit Rajak, a research scholar at the Jadavpur University, cites the phrase as an example of Bollywood "bashing the low-caste communities". In Sagina (1974), the song Sala Main to Saab Ban Gaya features a line Kaisa Raja Bhoj bana hain mera Gangu Teli ("How my Gangu Teli has become Raja Bhoj"). Dulhe Raja (1998) features a song containing the lines Chachundar ke sar pe na bhaye chameli / Kahaan Raja Bhoj aur kahan Gangu Teli ("A string of jasmine ain't no good on a rodent / Bhoj shall always be king, Gangu Teli redundant"). According to Rajak, the proverb "aptly indicates how in Indian society it is seemingly imperative, or rather normative, to compare a person of lower quality with a low-caste group." [14] The Vidarbha Teli Samaj Mahasangh, an organization of the Teli caste, protested against the Dulhe Raja song, stating that it hurt the sentiments of the Teli community. [15]
In 2013, Indian National Congress's Ghulam Nabi Azad referred to the Bharatiya Janata Party's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi (who belongs to the Teli caste) as Gangu Teli. The Bharatiya Janata Party criticized Azad's remarks as casteist and derogatory. [16]
Referring to the Panhala fort legend, the Punjabi Dalit-Naxalite Sant Ram Udasi and his daughter Iqbal Singh have portrayed Gangu Teli as an unwilling victim, coerced and brutalized by the monstrous king Bhoj. [12]
The Gurjara-Pratihara was a dynasty that ruled much of Northern India from the mid-8th to the 11th century. They ruled first at Ujjain and later at Kannauj.

Bhoja fought wars with nearly all his neighbours in attempts to extend his kingdom, with varying degrees of success. At its zenith, his empire extended from Chittor in the north to upper Konkan in the south, and from the Sabarmati River in the west to Vidisha in the east.
The Chandelas of Jejakabhukti was an Indian dynasty in Central India. The Chandelas ruled much of the Bundelkhand region between the 9th and the 13th centuries. They belonged to the Chandel clan of the Rajputs.
In Indian culture, the Agnivanshi are people who claim descent from Agni, the Vedic god of fire. The Agnivanshi lineage is one of the lineages among the Rajput clans, the others being the Suryavanshi and the Chandravanshi. According to medieval legends, there are four Agnivanshi clans: Chauhans (Chahamanas), Pratihar (Pratiharas), Parmars (Paramaras) and Solankis (Chaulukyas).
Vikramaditya was a legendary king as mentioned in ancient Indian literature, featuring in traditional stories including those in Vetala Panchavimshati and Singhasan Battisi. Many describe him as ruler with his capital at Ujjain. "Vikramaditya" was also a common title adopted by several monarchs in ancient and medieval India, and the Vikramaditya legends may be embellished accounts of different kings. According to popular tradition, Vikramaditya began the Vikrama Samvat era in 57 BCE after defeating the Shakas, and those who believe that he is based on a historical figure place him around the first century BCE. However, this era is identified as "Vikrama Samvat" after the ninth century CE.
Tailapa II, also known as Taila II and by his title Ahavamalla, was the founder of the Western Chalukya Empire in peninsular India. Tailapa claimed descent from the earlier imperial Chalukyas of Vatapi (Badami), and initially ruled as a Rashtrakuta vassal from the Tardavadi-1000 province in the present-day Vijayapura district of Karnataka. When the Rashtrakuta power declined following an invasion by the Paramara king Siyaka, Tailapa overthrew the Rashtrakuta emperor Karka II, and established a new dynasty.
The Western Chalukya Empire ruled most of the western Deccan, South India, between the 10th and 12th centuries. This Kannada-speaking dynasty is sometimes called the Kalyani Chalukya after its regal capital at Kalyani, today's Basavakalyan in the modern Bidar district of Karnataka state, and alternatively the Later Chalukya from its theoretical relationship to the 6th-century Chalukya dynasty of Badami. The dynasty is called Western Chalukyas to differentiate from the contemporaneous Eastern Chalukyas of Vengi, a separate dynasty. Before the rise of these Chalukyas, the Rashtrakuta Empire of Manyakheta controlled most of the Deccan Plateau and Central India for over two centuries. In 973, seeing confusion in the Rashtrakuta empire after a successful invasion of their capital by the ruler of the Paramara dynasty of Malwa, Tailapa II, a feudatory of the Rashtrakuta dynasty ruling from Bijapur region defeated his overlords and made Manyakheta his capital. The dynasty quickly rose to power and grew into an empire under Someshvara I who moved the capital to Kalyani.
The Seuna, Sevuna, or Yadavas of Devagiri was a medieval Indian dynasty, which at its peak ruled a realm stretching from the Narmada river in the north to the Tungabhadra river in the south, in the western part of the Deccan region. Its territory included present-day Maharashtra, northern Karnataka and parts of Madhya Pradesh, from its capital at Devagiri.

The Paramara dynasty was the ruling dynasty of Kingdom of Malwa in west-central India between 9th and 14th centuries. They belonged to the Parmara clan of the Gurjars.
Panhala fort, is located in Panhala, 20 kilometres northwest of Kolhapur in Maharashtra, India. It is strategically located looking over a pass in the Sahyadri mountain range which was a major trade route from Bijapur in the interior of Maharashtra to the coastal areas. Due to its strategic location, it was the centre of several skirmishes in the Deccan involving the Marathas, the Mughals and the British the grand son's of chhatrapati shivaji maharaj East India Company, the most notable being the Battle of Pavan Khind. Here, the queen regent of Kolhapur, Tarabai Ranisaheb, spent her formative years. Several parts of the fort and the structures within are still intact. It is also called as the 'Fort of Snakes' as it is zigzagged in shape.
The Bhojshala is an historic building located in Dhar, Madhya Pradesh, India. The name is derived from the celebrated king Bhoja of the Paramāra dynasty of central India, a patron of education and the arts, to whom major Sanskrit works on poetics, yoga and architecture are attributed. The architectural parts of the building proper are of different periods but mainly date the 12th century; the Islamic domed tombs in the wider campus were added between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries.
Siyaka, also known as Harsha, was a Paramara king, who ruled in west-central India. He appears to have been the first independent ruler of the Paramara dynasty.
Munja, also known as Vakpati II, was an Indian ruler from the Paramara dynasty, who ruled in the Malwa region. He is known for consolidating the Paramara kingdom, for patronizing poets and scholars and for achieving the military success against almost all of the neighbouring kingdoms.
Sindhuraja was an Indian king from the Paramara dynasty, who ruled the Malwa region in the late 10th century. He was the younger brother of Munja, and the father of Bhoja.
The Kalachuris of Tripuri, also known the Kalachuris of Chedi, ruled parts of central India during 7th to 13th centuries. They are also known as the Later Kalachuris to distinguish them from their earlier namesakes, especially the Kalachuris of Mahishmati. Their core territory included the historical Chedi region, and their capital was located at Tripuri.
The 11th century Paramara king Bhoja ruled from his capital at Dhara. The period of his reign is dated approximately 1010 CE to 1055 CE, although some historians believe that he ascended the throne before 1010 CE. Bhoja inherited a kingdom centered around the Malwa region, and made several attempts to expand it varying results. He managed to annex territories as far as northern parts of Konkan, but these territorial gains were short-lived. He fought wars against several of his neighbours, including the Chaulukyas of Gujarat, the Chalukyas of Lata, the Chalukyas of Kalyani, the Chandelas of Jejakabhukti, the Kachchhapaghatas of Gwalior, the Chahamanas of Shakambhari, the Chahamanas of Naddula, and the Kalachuris of Tripuri. He also conflicted with Gaznavid Turk Invaders, Mahmud's desecration of the Somnath temple in Gujarat motivated Bhoja to lead an army against him, however after Somnath raid, Mahmud Gazhnavi chose a more dangerous route via Sindh, to avoid facing the invading powerful armies of Bhoja.
Bhoja was an Indian king from the Paramara dynasty, whose kingdom was centered around the Malwa region in present-day Madhya Pradesh. By 2003, 12 inscriptions dated to Bhoja's region had been discovered at Banswara, Betma, Bhojpur, Depalpur, Dhar, Kalwan, Mahaudi, Kokapur, Piploda, Tilakwada and Ujjain.
The origin of the Gurjara-Pratihara dynasty of India is a topic of debate among historians. The rulers of this dynasty used the self-designation "Pratihara" for their clan, but have been described as "Gurjara" by their neighbouring kingdoms. Only one particular inscription of a feudatory ruler named Mathanadeva mentions him as a "Gurjara-Pratihara".
