Gibraltar Football Club is an association football team based in the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar. Formed in 1893, it was one of the first civilian football teams to be established in Gibraltar, along with Prince of Wales F.C.; until then football had been the almost exclusive preserve of members of the British military forces.

The British Overseas Territories (BOTs) or United Kingdom Overseas Territories (UKOTs) are fourteen territories under the jurisdiction and sovereignty of the United Kingdom. They are remnants of the British Empire that have not been granted independence or have voted to remain British territories. These territories do not form part of the United Kingdom and, with the exception of Gibraltar, are not part of the European Union. Most of the permanently inhabited territories are internally self-governing, with the UK retaining responsibility for defence and foreign relations. Three are inhabited only by a transitory population of military or scientific personnel. They all share the British monarch as head of state.

Gibraltar British Overseas Territory

Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory located at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula. It has an area of 6.7 km2 (2.6 sq mi) and is bordered to the north by Spain. The landscape is dominated by the Rock of Gibraltar at the foot of which is a densely populated town area, home to over 32,000 people, primarily Gibraltarians.

History

Gibraltar F.C. was formed in November 1893 by cricketers to allow them to continue playing sport during the winter. [1] The club's formation led to a growing interest in football among Gibraltar's civilian population, which in turn led to the founding of the Gibraltar Civilian Football Association. [1]

The Gibraltar Football Association or also Gibraltar FA (GFA) is the governing body for Gibraltarian football and futsal. It was formed as the Gibraltar Civilian Football Association in 1895, changing to its current name in later years. It is one of the oldest football associations in the world. From October 2012, the GFA were provisional members of UEFA and the Gibraltar national futsal team, under-19 and under-17 representative teams participated in the 2013/14 UEFA season competitions. At the XXXVII UEFA Congress held in London on 24 May 2013, Gibraltar was accepted as a full member of UEFA. Gibraltar were admitted to FIFA as a full member on 13 May 2016 at the 66th FIFA Congress in Mexico.

When the Gibraltar Football League was formed in 1895, Gibraltar F.C. became the inaugural winners of the new league. Gibraltar F.C. then failed to win the league again until the 1923–24 season following Prince of Wales F.C. who had won the three previous seasons. [2] In addition to winning the league in 1895, Gibraltar F.C. were also recorded as having won the inaugural Merchants Cup however there are conflicting records of this with other records claiming that Jubilee F.C. won the Merchants Cup by beating Gibraltar F.C. in the final. [3]

Gibraltar F.C. had also played matches against teams from outside Gibraltar. In 1914, they played a match against Spanish team Betis. [4]

While Gibraltar F.C.'s men's team have ceased to compete in the Gibraltar Football League, Gibraltar F.C. Ladies continue to maintain a presence in the women's leagues in Gibraltar, winning the women's league as recently as 2011. [5]

Prince of Wales Football Club was a Gibraltarian association football club. It had been founded by 1892 as one of the first civilian football clubs in Gibraltar. Although no longer in existence, up until 2014 it held the record for the most national championships in Gibraltar.

UCD Womens Soccer Club

UCD Women's Soccer Club is an Irish association football club based in Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown. It is the women's association football team of University College Dublin. Founded in 1966, UCD are one of the oldest women's football clubs in the Republic of Ireland. Like the UCD men's team, the women's football team has competed in national competitions, such as the FAI Women's Cup and the Women's National League, as well as intervarsity competitions.
