Gloria Nevarez is the second Commissioner of the Mountain West Conference (MW),having assumed that position from retiring MW commissioner Craig Thompson on January 1,2023. Before joining the MW,she had been the fourth full-time commissioner of the West Coast Conference (WCC). [1] Nevarez is the first Hispanic American to become a Commissioner of an NCAA Division I Conference. [2] [3] [4] Prior to her duties as WCC commissioner,Nevarez served as a senior level administrator at the Pac-12 Conference,University of Oklahoma,WCC,University of California,Berkeley,and San Jose State University. Born in the Bay Area (approximately 1971),Nevarez graduated from Santa Clara High School. [7] Nevarez went on to attend the University of Massachusetts (UMass),where she was a scholarship student-athlete in basketball. [8] Nevarez graduated from UMass (cum laude) with a B.S. in Sports Management. [9] [6] After completion of her career at UMass,Nevarez attended the University of California,Berkeley,Law where she graduated with a Juris Doctor. [10]
Finishing the completion of her J.D. degree,Nevarez began a career at a law firm. [7] After a brief time practicing law,Nevarez was hired as the first full-time Director of Compliance for athletics at San Jose State University. [10] From there,Nevarez returned to her law school alma mater,joining the athletic program staff as the Assistant Athletics Director of Compliance and Legal Affairs,while also serving as the interim Senior Woman Administrator. [11] Following that,Nevarez began a term as the Associate Commissioner and Senior Woman Administrator for the West Coast Conference for the next 5 years. [5] In August 2007,Nevarez was named Senior Associate Athletics Director and Senior Woman Administrator at the University of Oklahoma. [12]
In March 2010,Nevarez was named Senior Associate Commissioner and Senior Woman Administrator of the Pac-10 Conference,known since 2011 as the Pac-12 Conference. [11] During her time at the Pac-12,Nevarez oversaw all sports and championships except football and was the leagues' point person for men's basketball. [5] Additionally,Nevarez was instrumental in the Pac-12's expansion from ten institutions to twelve,the relocation of the men's basketball tournament in Las Vegas,and the women's basketball tournament in Seattle. [13] She was the lead on various international trips to China and Australia taken by Pac-12 teams,notably,Nevarez was instrumental in assisting UCLA when three players were arrested in China for stealing. In March 2018,the West Coast Conference Presidents' Council selected Nevarez as the fourth full-time Commissioner to serve the West Coast Conference. [5] [15]
In November 2022,the Mountain West Conference Board of Directors selected Nevarez as the new commissioner;she officially assumed her duties on January 1,2023. [16]
Nevarez is married to fellow University of California,Berkeley,Law graduate Richard Young. [5] Additionally,Nevarez has served as an adjunct faculty member at the University of San Francisco teaching on topics in sports law. [5] Her father is of Puerto Rican descent and her mother is of mixed Filipina and Irish ancestry. [17]

Kelly Lee Graves is the current head women's basketball coach at the University of Oregon. He was formerly an assistant coach for the Portland Pilots (1994–1997) and St. Mary Gaels,where he later got his first head coaching stint with the Gaels from 1997 to 2000. He was named WCC co-coach of the year for his accomplishments. In 2005,2010,and 2011,Gonzaga went undefeated in WCC regular season play.

The award was first given following the conference's inaugural 1952–53 season,when it was known as the California Basketball Association. The only season in which the award was not presented was the conference's second season of 1953–54. There have been six ties in the award's history,most recently in 2022–23 between Brandin Podziemski of Santa Clara and Drew Timme of Gonzaga. There have also been 13 repeat winners,but only one—Bill Cartwright of San Francisco—has been Player of the Year three times.

Drafted by the Chicago Sky with the third pick in the 2011 WNBA draft,she was selected as an All-Star and named to the All-Rookie Team in her rookie year. The 2017–18 Gonzaga Bulldogs men's basketball team represented Gonzaga University in the 2017–18 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The team was led by head coach Mark Few,who was in his 19th season as head coach. The team played its home games at McCarthey Athletic Center in Spokane,Washington. This was the Bulldogs 38th season as a member of the West Coast Conference. They finished the season 32–5,17–1 in WCC play to win the WCC regular season championship. They defeated Loyola Marymount,San Francisco and BYU to become champions of the WCC tournament. They received the WCC's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament where they defeated UNC Greensboro and Ohio State to advance to the Sweet Sixteen where they lost to Florida State.
The 2017–18 San Francisco Dons women's basketball team represents the University of San Francisco in the 2017–18 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. They were led by head coach Molly Goodenbour in her second season at San Francisco. The Dons,as members of the West Coast Conference,play their home games at War Memorial Gymnasium. They finished the season 16–15,10–8 in WCC play to finish in fifth place. They advanced to the semifinals of the WCC women's tournament where they lost to Gonzaga.
Craig Donald Thompson is an American athletic administrator. He became the commissioner of the Mountain West Conference (MW) upon the formation of that league in 1998 and served until retiring from that position at the end of 2022.
The 2019 NCAA Division I Softball season, play of college softball in the United States organized by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at the Division I level,began February 7,2019. The season will progress through the regular season,many conference tournaments and championship series,and will conclude with the 2019 NCAA Division I softball tournament and 2019 Women's College World Series. The Women's College World Series,consisting of the eight remaining teams in the NCAA Tournament will be held annually in Oklahoma City,Oklahoma at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium,will end in June 2019.
