Goleba punctata is a species of jumping spider in the genus Goleba . The species has been identified in Madagascar. The female was first described by George Peckham, Elizabeth Peckham and W.H. Wheeler in 1889. Initially placed in the genus Asemonea , the species was moved to Goleba in 1980 by Fred Wanless. [1] [2]


They are distributed across southern Africa (Ghana, Congo, Kenya, Angola, South Africa), and have been collected occasionally from the foliage of woody plants. [3] [4]

Appearance

Goleba punctata have light green, pear-shaped carapaces (with females being slightly larger and rounder than males) parallel brown stripes on the thorax, and black markings around all but the anterior median eyes. [1] [3] The eyes are in four rows on high tubercles with the posterior median pair being the largest. The abdomen is narrower than the carapace with a poorly defined pattern of reddish-brown hairs. [3]

The male also has an unusual right-angle shaped subtegulum and the female a simpler epigyne than other Asemonea species that helps identify the species.

The spider is small, between 3.1 and 3.64 mm long, the female being generally larger than the male. It has a carapace that is pear-shaped and either yellow in the case of the male or green in the case of the female, measuring between 1.28 and 1.46 mm in length.The abdomen is whiter, between 1.28 and 1.46 mm long and has a distinctive star-shaped pattern on the back. Its copulatory organs help differentiate the species, particularly the furrow on the femoral apophysis of the male palpal bulb and the shallow depression in the middle of the female epigyne.
