General elections were held in Greenland on 3 December 2002. [1] The result was victory for the Siumut party, which won 10 of the 31 seats in the Parliament. [1]

Greenland autonomous country within the Kingdom of Denmark

Greenland is an autonomous constituent country of the Kingdom of Denmark between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans, east of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. Though physiographically a part of the continent of North America, Greenland has been politically and culturally associated with Europe for more than a millennium. The majority of its residents are Inuit, whose ancestors began migrating from the Canadian mainland in the 13th century, gradually settling across the island.

Siumut is a social-democratic political party in Greenland. The party was an observer affiliate of the Socialist International. Siumut is led by the current Greenlandic Premier Kim Kielsen. Until September 2014 it was led by Aleqa Hammond, who was the first woman to lead the party.

Parliament of Greenland parliament

The Inatsisartut, also known as the Parliament of Greenland in English, is the unicameral parliament of Greenland, a autonomous country in the Danish realm. Established in 1979, it meets in Inatsisartut, on the islet of Nuuk Center in central Nuuk.

Jonathan Jakob Jørgen Otto Motzfeldt was a Greenlandic priest and politician. He is considered one of the leading figures in the establishment of Greenland Home Rule. Jonathan Motzfeldt was the first and third Prime Minister of Greenland. He was Greenland's prime minister from 1979 until 1991 and again from 1997 until 2002. He is Greenland's longest serving prime minister and has won the most elections of any prime minister of Greenland.

1990 Danish general election

General elections were held in Denmark on 12 December 1990. Although the election resulted in a strong gain for the Social Democratic Party, Poul Schlüter's coalition government was able to continue despite the Danish Social Liberal Party leaving. Schlüter's coalition consisted of the Conservative People's Party and Venstre. Voter turnout was 82.8% in Denmark proper, 54.4% in the Faroe Islands and 50.8% in Greenland.

Greenland elects on national level a legislature. The Greenlandic Parliament has 31 members of parliament, elected for a four-year term by proportional representation. Greenland have a multi-party system, with numerous parties in which a single party normally does not have a chance of gaining power alone, and therefore the parties must work together in order to form a coalition government.

1981 Danish general election

General elections were held in Denmark on 8 December 1981. The Social Democratic Party remained the largest in the Folketing, with 59 of the 179 seats. Voter turnout was 83.3% in Denmark proper, 55.4% in the Faroe Islands and 61.0% in Greenland.

1973 Danish general election

General elections were held in Denmark on 4 December 1973 and in the Faroe Islands on 13 December. It has since been referred to as the Landslide Election, as five new or previously unrepresented parties won seats, and more than half the members of the parliament were replaced. The Social Democratic Party, which had led a minority government until this election, lost a third of their seats. After the election Poul Hartling, the leader of the liberal Venstre, formed the smallest minority government in Denmark's history with only 22 seats, supported by the Progress Party, the Conservative People's Party, the Social Liberal Party, the Centre Democrats and the Christian People's Party.

1966 Danish general election

General elections were held in Denmark on 22 November 1966, although in Greenland the elections were held on 6 December 1966. The Social Democratic Party remained the largest in the Folketing, with 69 of the 179 seats. Voter turnout was 88.6% in Denmark proper, 48.8% in the Faroe Islands and 59.0% in Greenland.

Maurice J. ("Moe") Murphy Jr. was the New Hampshire Attorney General and an appointed United States Senator.

General elections were held in Greenland on 2 June 2009. Prime Minister Hans Enoksen announced the election date on 15 April 2009, stating that he would prefer for a newly elected parliament to administer Greenland when the self-government reform takes effect on 21 June 2009. The reform gave more power to the Greenlandic parliament with decisions on most issues being devolved to the parliament but defence and foreign affairs remaining under the control of Denmark.

Same-sex marriage in Greenland, an autonomous country within the Kingdom of Denmark, has been legal since 1 April 2016. The territory had previously recognised registered partnerships, from 1 July 1996 until 1 April 2016.

This national electoral calendar for the year 2002 lists the national/federal direct elections to be held in 2002 in the de jure and de facto sovereign states. By-elections are excluded, though national referendums are included.

Aleqa Hammond Prime Minister of Greenland since 2013

Aleqa Hammond is a Greenlandic politician and member of the Danish Folketing (parliament). Formerly the leader of the Siumut party, she became Greenland's first female Prime Minister after her party emerged as the largest parliamentary faction in the 2013 elections. In 2014 she stepped down as Prime Minister and leader of Siumut, following a case of misuse of public funds. She was expelled from Siumut on 23 August 2016 after yet another case of misuse of public funds and became an independent. On 31 March 2018 she announced that she is running in the 2018 Greenlandic parliamentary election for the Siumut breakaway Nunatta Qitornai.

General elections were held in Greenland on 4 March 1995. Siumut remained the largest party in the Parliament, winning 12 of the 31 seats.

Atassut political party in Greenland

Atassut is a liberal-conservative and unionist political party in Greenland. Founded on 29 April 1978, Atassut is an established partner of the Liberal Party of Denmark.
