HMHS Glenart Castle (His Majesty's Hospital Ship) was a steamship originally built as Galician in 1900 for the Union-Castle Line. She was renamed Glenart Castle in 1914, but was requisitioned for use as a British hospital ship during the First World War. On 26 February 1918, she was hit and sunk by a torpedo fired from the German U-boat UC-56. [1]
Britain entered the First World War on 4 August 1914. The next day Galician was held up west of the Canary Islands by a ship flying a German flag. German officers boarded her, searched her papers and took two Army officer passengers prisoner before releasing her. In October 1914 she was refitted as a hospital ship and renamed Glenart Castle. [2]
Glenart Castle subsequently suffered damaged when she struck a mine in the English Channel 8 nautical miles (15 km; 9.2 mi) northwest of the Owers Lightship on 1 March 1917. [3] Hit near the rear starboard around 23:40, the engines were stopped and the damage inspected. The watertight doors to the engine room were warped and could not be closed completely. Upon hearing that the boiler room and Number 4 hold were flooding, Captain Day ordered the ship to be evacuated. All 115 crew, 68 medical staff and 525 patients were saved, and the crippled ship was towed into Portsmouth. [4] Glenart Castle was repaired and returned to service in November 1917.
On 25 February 1918, Glenart Castle left Newport, South Wales, heading towards Brest, France, to collect patients. After 3:00 on 26 February, fishermen in the Bristol Channel saw her clearly lit up as a hospital ship. John Hill — a fisherman on Swansea Castle — remembered "I saw the Hospital Ship with green lights all around her – around the saloon. She had her red side lights showing and mast-head light, and also another red light which I suppose was the Red Cross light." [5] A little before 04:00, Glenart Castle was hit by a torpedo fired from the German U-boat UC-56 in the No. 3 hold. [1] The blast destroyed most of the lifeboats, while the subsequent pitch of the vessel hindered attempts to launch the remaining boats. In the seven to eight minutes the ship took to sink, accounts varied as to how many lifeboats were launched, but only one lifeboat carrying 22 men survived the night on rough seas. The men bailed constantly in wintry conditions to avoid being swamped. They were rescued by a French boat, Feon, around 10:30. Four rafts bearing nine more men were located by USS Parker between 13:00 and 15:00. Fireman Jesse White washed astern in his exhausted state and was injured by Parker's propeller. White died on board. One man was unconscious when rescued and died in hospital the next day having never recovered consciousness. He was subsequently identified as Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) Private Samuel "Harry" Lund. The body of wireless operator Michael Sinnott was recovered off Trevose Head, Cornwall, on 2 March 1918. The most likely figures are that 182 were on board, of whom 29 survived. A total of 153 people were killed. Ninety-five of 120 crew died, including Captain Bernard Burt who had given the order "Every Man For Himself" before he was last seen retiring to the chart room. Both chaplains, 48 of 52 RAMC personnel, and all eight nurses of the Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service died. [7] The matron of Glenart Castle, Kate Beaufoy, was among those killed in the sinking. Beaufoy was a veteran of the South African War and the Gallipoli campaign. [8] Her family kept her diary and her writings describe life on the ship. [9] Also killed was Staff Nurse Edith Blake, the only Australian nurse killed in action in the First World War. Having trained at the Coast Hospital (later Prince Henry Hospital) in Sydney, she volunteered to serve and was one of almost 130 Australian nurses allotted to the QAIMNS. [10] She nursed at 1 Australian General Hospital in Cairo and 17 British General Hospital in Alexandria, on HMHS Essequibo and nursed Germans at Belmont Prisoners of War Hospital, Surrey before joining Glenart Castle. She described her war service in detailed letters home to her family. [11]
Newspaper reports suggested that the submarine may have shot at initial survivors of the sinking in an effort to cover up the sinking of Glenart Castle. The body of a junior officer of Glenart Castle was recovered from the water close to the position of the sinking. It was marked with two gunshot wounds, one in the neck and the other in the thigh. [12] The body also had a life vest indicating he was shot while in the water. [1] However, official records do not support this story. [13]
The ship's wreck lies approximately 10 mi (16 km) west of Lundy [14] in 240 ft (73 m) of water at 51°7'N 5°3'W. [9]
After the war, the British Admiralty sought the captains of U-boats who sank hospital ships, in order to charge them with war crimes. [15] Kapitänleutnant Wilhelm Kiesewetter — the commander of UC-56 [16] — was arrested after the war on his voyage back to Germany and interned in the Tower of London. [15] He was released on the grounds that Britain had no right to hold a detainee during the Armistice. [15] Britain pressed for Berlin to pursue the cases concerning the British hospital ships Rewa, Glenart Castle, Guildford Castle and Llandovery Castle at the Leipzig War Crimes Trials, as all were attacked in waters in which Germany had declared that they would be respected under the Hague Convention. Only the case of HMHS Llandovery Castle was prosecuted, but the convictions were quashed. [17]
A memorial plaque was dedicated on the 84th anniversary of the sinking, 26 February 2002 near to Hartland Point, with the inscription, "In proud and grateful memory of those who gave their lives in the hospital ship Glenart Castle. Please remember, Master Lt. Cmdr. Burt, Matron Katy Beaufoy, the ships officers, crew and medical staff who died when their ship was torpedoed by UC56 in the early hours of 26th Feb 1918. The ship lies 20 miles WNW from this stone. For those in peril on the sea. R.I.P. Dedicated 26.02.2002". [18]
The Scottish military charity Glen Art was founded in 2013 by Fiona MacDonald in honour of her great aunt nurse Mary McKinnon who died while serving on the ship. In February 2018, Glen Art held a memorial concert in Arisaig Scotland commemorating the centenary of the sinking of HMHS Glenart Castle and nurse McKinnon’s death. [19] [20] [21]
German submarine U-552 was a Type VIIC U-boat built for Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine for service during World War II. She was laid down on 1 December 1939 at Blohm & Voss in Hamburg as yard number 528, launched on 14 September 1940, and went into service on 4 December 1940. U-552 was nicknamed the Roter Teufel after her mascot of a grinning devil, which was painted on the conning tower. She was one of the more successful of her class, operating for over three years of continual service and sinking or damaging 35 Allied ships with 164,276 GRT and 1,190 tons sunk and 26,910 GRT damaged. She was a member of 21 wolf packs.
HMHSBritannic was the third and final vessel of the White Star Line's Olympic class of steamships and the second White Star ship to bear the name Britannic. She was the youngest sister of the RMS Olympic and the RMS Titanic and was intended to enter service as a transatlantic passenger liner. She was operated as a hospital ship from 1915 until her sinking near the Greek island of Kea, in the Aegean Sea, in November 1916. At the time she was the largest hospital ship in the world.
SS Justicia was a British troop ship that was launched in Ireland in 1914 and sunk off County Donegal in 1918. She was designed and launched as the transatlantic liner Statendam, a new flagship for the Holland America Line (NASM), but the outbreak of First World War delayed her completion. In 1915 NASM agreed to let the United Kingdom acquire her and have her completed as a troop ship.
The RMS Windsor Castle, along with her sister, RMS Arundel Castle, was an ocean liner laid down by the Union-Castle Line for service from the United Kingdom to South Africa. During World War 2 the Windsor Castle was requisitioned as a troopship and on 23 March 1943 was sunk by an aerial torpedo off the coast of Algeria.
HMHS Llandovery Castle, built in 1914 in Glasgow as RMS Llandovery Castle for the Union-Castle Line, was one of five Canadian hospital ships that served in the First World War. On a voyage from Halifax, Nova Scotia to Liverpool, England, the ship was torpedoed off southern Ireland on 27 June 1918. The sinking was the deadliest Canadian naval disaster of the war. 234 doctors, nurses, members of the Canadian Army Medical Corps, soldiers and seamen died in the sinking and subsequent machine-gunning of lifeboats. Twenty five people are known to have survived. 24 were the occupants on a single life-raft. The incident became infamous internationally and was considered, after the Armenian genocide, as one of the war's worst atrocities. After the war, the case of Llandovery Castle was one of six alleged German war crimes prosecuted at the Leipzig trials.
SS City of Cairo was a British passenger steamship. She was sunk in the Second World War with heavy loss of life, most after the sinking, but before being rescued.
SM U-86 was a Type U 81 submarine manufactured in the Germaniawerft, Kiel shipyard for the German Empire during World War I.
SM UC-56 was a German Type UC II minelaying submarine or U-boat in the German Imperial Navy during World War I. The U-boat was ordered on 12 January 1916, laid down on 4 March 1916, and was launched on 26 August 1916. She was commissioned into the German Imperial Navy on 18 December 1916 as SM UC-56. In six patrols UC-56 was credited with sinking one ship by torpedo: the British hospital ship HMHS Glenart Castle. UC-56 suffered from mechanical breakdowns that prevented her from submerging. She put in at Santander, Spain, on 24 May 1918 and was interned there for the duration of the war.
HMHS Rewa was a steamship originally built for the British-India Steam Navigation Company for their mail and passenger service but requisitioned in August 1914 and fitted out for use as a British hospital ship during the First World War. On 4 January 1918, she was hit and sunk by a torpedo from the German U-boat U-55.

HMHS Dover Castle was a steam ship originally built for the Union-Castle Line and launched in 1904. In 1914 she was requisitioned for use as a British hospital ship during the First World War. On 26 May 1917 she was torpedoed 50 nautical miles North of Bône, Algeria by UC-67 of the Imperial German Navy.
HMHS Gloucester Castle was a steam ship originally built for the Union-Castle Line, but requisitioned for use as a British hospital ship during the First World War. On 30 March 1917 she was torpedoed by German U-boat UB-32. She was, however, salvaged, and returned to civilian service after the war. She was sunk by the German commerce raider Michel in 1942 off Ascension Island in the South Atlantic.
SS Anglia was a steam ship requisitioned for use as a hospital ship during the First World War. On 17 November 1915 she hit a mine laid by the German U-boat, UC-5.
SM U-73 was one of 329 submarines serving in the Imperial German Navy in World War I. She engaged in the commerce war as part of the First Battle of the Atlantic. U-73 has the distinction of being responsible for planting the underwater mine that later led to the sinking of the largest ship sunk during World War I, the 48,158 tons hospital ship Britannic.
Helmut Patzig, also known as Helmut Brümmer-Patzig was a German U-boat commander in the Kaiserliche Marine in World War I, and the Kriegsmarine in World War II. He was captain of U-86, the vessel that sank a Canadian hospital ship, HMHS Llandovery Castle, in 1918. Patzig evaded prosecution at the Leipzig War Crimes Trials in 1921 after fleeing German jurisdiction. During the Second World War he returned to naval service, serving as commander of the 26th U-boat Flotilla, a U-boat training group, from 1943 into 1945.
SS Marquette was a British troopship of 7,057 tons which was torpedoed and sunk in the Aegean Sea 36 nautical miles (67 km) south of Salonica, Greece on 23 October 1915 by SM U-35, with the loss of 167 lives.
SS Donegal was a Midland Railway passenger ferry that served in the First World War as an ambulance ship. She was completed in 1904 and sunk by enemy action in April 1917.
Rena Maude McLean was a Canadian nurse who volunteered during World War I. She helped set up the first hospital in France staffed exclusively by Canadians, and also served in the UK and Greece. She died when the Canadian hospital ship HMHS Llandovery Castle was torpedoed off the coast of Ireland.
SS Torrington was a British cargo steamship that was built in England in 1905, owned and registered in Wales, and sunk by a German U-boat in 1917. She was a turret deck ship: an unusual hull design that was developed by William Doxford & Sons of Sunderland in the 1890s.
