The Hart Mine Formation is a geologic formation controversially defined [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] from exposures in south-central New Mexico. It preserves fossils dating back to the Eocene epoch. [1]
The formation is mostly calcareous reddish-brown siltstone, which makes up 72% of the type section. The remainder is mostly conglomerate with only minor silty mudstone. The conglomerate is primarily Paleozoic limestone with lesser amounts of granite. Total thickness is estimated at 320 meters (1,050 ft). The formation lies disconformably on Crevasse Canyon Formation and grades above into the Spears Formation. [1]
The formation provides evidence for a pulse of Laramide deformation in New Mexico 50 million years ago. [1]
The formation contains fossils of turtles, the lizard Glyptosaurus , the brontothere Telmatherium manteoceras, the rodent Reithroparamys huerfanensis, the insectivore Leptotomus parvus, the equid Orohippus pumilis, and the primate Notharctus tenebrosus , pointing to a Bridgerian age for the formation. The formation was first defined by Spencer G. Lucas and Thomas E. Williamson in 1993 and named for the Hart Mine, an abandoned coal mine. The beds were formerly assigned to the Baca Formation but show differences in lithology and appear to have been deposited in a different sedimentary basin. [1] However, the reassignment was disputed by Cather and collaborators, who argued that the lithological distinction is not great and the basin reconstruction was still speculative. [2] Lucas responded in turn that the Hart Mine Formation has more abundant conglomerate than the Baca Formation and argued that this makes it lithologically distinct. [3] [4] However, the reassignment continues to be controversial. [5] [6]
The Chinle Formation is an Upper Triassic continental geological formation of fluvial, lacustrine, and palustrine to eolian deposits spread across the U.S. states of Nevada, Utah, northern Arizona, western New Mexico, and western Colorado. In New Mexico, it is often raised to the status of a geological group, the Chinle Group. Some authors have controversially considered the Chinle to be synonymous to the Dockum Group of eastern Colorado and New Mexico, western Texas, the Oklahoma panhandle, and southwestern Kansas. The Chinle Formation is part of the Colorado Plateau, Basin and Range, and the southern section of the Interior Plains. A probable separate depositional basin within the Chinle is found in northwestern Colorado and northeastern Utah. The southern portion of the Chinle reaches a maximum thickness of a little over 520 meters (1,710 ft). Typically, the Chinle rests unconformably on the Moenkopi Formation.
The Dockum is a Late Triassic geologic group found primarily on the Llano Estacado of western Texas and eastern New Mexico with minor exposures in southwestern Kansas, eastern Colorado, and Oklahoma panhandle. The Dockum reaches a maximum thickness of slightly over 650 m but is usually much thinner. The Dockum rests on an unconformity over the Anisian aged Anton Chico Formation.
The Laramie Formation is a geologic formation of Late Cretaceous (Maastrichtian) age, named by Clarence King in 1876 for exposures in northeastern Colorado, in the United States. It was deposited on a coastal plain and in coastal swamps that flanked the Western Interior Seaway. It contains coal, clay and uranium deposits, as well as plant and animal fossils, including dinosaur remains.
Stylemys is the first fossil genus of dry land tortoise belonging to the order Testudines discovered in the United States. The genus lived in temperate to subtropical areas of North America, Europe, and Asia, based on fossil distribution. The genus was first described in 1851 by Joseph Leidy. The tortoise was common in the prehistoric Badlands, especially Nebraska and South Dakota. The species has also been found in the formations in and around Badlands National Park. Fossil fragments have also been found in the Palm Park Formation of New Mexico.
The McRae Formation is a geological formation exposed in southern New Mexico whose strata date back to the Late Cretaceous. Dinosaur remains are among the fossils that have been recovered from the formation.
The Nacimiento Formation is a sedimentary rock formation found in the San Juan Basin of western New Mexico. It has an age of 61 to 65.7 million years, corresponding to the early and middle Paleocene. The formation has yielded an abundance of fossils from shortly after the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction event that provide clues to the recovery and diversification of mammals following the extinction event.
The Santa Rosa Formation is a geologic formation exposed in New Mexico that was deposited in the Carnian Age of the late Triassic Period.
The Mogollon-Datil volcanic field is a large silicic volcanic field in western New Mexico. It is a part of an extensive Eocene to Oligocene volcanic event which includes the San Juan volcanic field in southwestern Colorado, the Trans-Pecos volcanic field in west Texas and north central Mexico, the Boot Heel volcanic field in the bootheel of southwestern New Mexico and adjacent areas of Arizona and Mexico; and the vast volcanic field of the Sierra Madre Occidental of western Mexico. The Mogollon-Datil volcanic field was formed in "four discrete pulses representing synchronized activity of two separate cauldron complexes".
The Wasatch Formation (Tw) is an extensive highly fossiliferous geologic formation stretching across several basins in Idaho, Montana Wyoming, Utah and western Colorado. It preserves fossils dating back to the Early Eocene period. The formation defines the Wasatchian or Lostcabinian, a period of time used within the NALMA classification, but the formation ranges in age from the Clarkforkian to Bridgerian.
