The Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal is the final appellate court of Hong Kong. It was established on 1 July 1997,upon the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region,replacing the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council as the highest judicial institution under Hong Kong law. As defined in Articles 19 and 85 of the Basic Law of Hong Kong,the Court of Final Appeal "exercises judicial power in the Region independently and free from any interference." The Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal Ordinance and the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal Rules set out the detailed functions and procedures of the court.
Wang Linqing is a Chinese former Supreme People's Court judge. He is known for participating in the trial of Zhao Faqi v. Shaanxi Government.
"Liberate Hong Kong,revolution of our times" is a slogan used by social movements in Hong Kong. The slogan was first used in 2016 by Hong Kong Indigenous spokesman Edward Leung as his campaign theme and slogan for the 2016 New Territories East by-election. He emphasised that anyone could take part in innovation and change regardless of age,hence the use of the phrase "revolution of our times." In the legislative election held later that year,Youngspiration,which was cooperating with Hong Kong Indigenous as Leung was banned from running by the Electoral Affairs Commission,also used the slogan for their campaign.
Sun Xiaoguo,was a serial child rapist and gang leader from Kunming,China. Sun was known for the brutality of his crimes as well as his evasion of justice. Sun was sentenced to death in 1998,but his sentence was commuted to twenty years due to corruption within the system. He was released in April 2010,after serving 12 years and 5 months. After being released from prison,Sun participated in organised crime under the name "Li Linchen". During a crackdown on organised crime,Sun was arrested on charges of leading an organised criminal gang. When Sun's name appeared in the list of criminal gangs,his case attracted the attention of the media,as he had been sentenced to death 21 years prior. Sun was executed on 20 February 2020. Sun's brutal methods stunned the investigating staff,and the phrase "[Deng] Xiaoping rules in the day,[Sun] Xiaoguo rules in the night" spread in Kunming.

The month of June 2020 was the first anniversary of the 2019–2020 Hong Kong protests. The decision taken by the National People's Congress on national security legislation and the alleviation of the COVID-19 pandemic in Hong Kong led to a new series of protests and international responses. On 30 June,the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress passed the Hong Kong national security law which came into force the same day,leading to even more people protesting on 1 July.
The enactment of the Hong Kong national security law on 30 June 2020 has since caused huge changes in Hong Kong’s local education,government,culture,society,and economy. These effects are considered to be the result of the Hong Kong government’s continuing autocratization.
The offices of Apple Daily,once the largest pro-democracy newspaper in Hong Kong,and its parent company,Next Digital,were raided and executives arrested by the Hong Kong Police Force on 10 August 2020 and again on 17 June 2021. Some of the arrested and three companies of Next Digital were charged under the Hong Kong national security law. The 26-year-old newspaper was forced to close in June 2021 following the raids and freezing of its capital.
The Hong Kong 47 are a group of 47 pro-democracy advocates in Hong Kong charged with conspiracy to commit subversion under the Hong Kong national security law.
On 22 February 2021,Xia Baolong,director of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office,proposed that Hong Kong's governance had to be in the hands of "patriots". Observers considered it possible that the definition of "patriot" would require candidates for public office to embrace the rule of the Chinese Communist Party,as also suggested by Hong Kong Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Erick Tsang;and that this signified a departure from the position that had prevailed since a speech by China's paramount leader Deng Xiaoping in 1984.
Few protests took place in March 2021 and there was no large-scale demonstrations in threat of the national security law. The charge against 47 pro-democracy activists for subversion on participating in a primary election was widely condemned by international community.
The city held its first National Security Education Day after the national security law had come into force. Chief Executive Carrie Lam emphasized that the law had helped Hong Kong to emerge from the "dark violence" of the 2019–2020 Hong Kong protests. National Security Committee Adviser Luo Huining also gave a speech. Even very young children were photographed handling toy weapons,which drew criticism.
Student Politicism was a student political group in Hong Kong. Founded on 26 May 2020,the group was one of only few pro-democracy organisations still existing in Hong Kong as of September 2021,before it was dissolved on 24 September 2021 after core members were charged under the National Security Law.
HKSAR v. Lai Chee Ying was an appeal involving points of law by the Department of Justice over the decision of the Court of First Instance (CFI) to grant bail to the founder of Apple Daily Jimmy Lai. The Court of Final Appeal (CFA) reversed the CFI's interpretation of art.42(2) of the Hong Kong national security law.

Lawrence Lau Wai-chung is a Hong Kong barrister. Having served as police,deputy magistrate,and Sham Shui Po District Councillor,Lau was arrested in 2020 for joining pro-democracy primaries as one of the Hong Kong 47.
Hong Kong Inmedia is a Hong Kong-based online news website established in 2004. After the shutdown of Apple Daily,Stand News,and Citizen News in the aftermath of the 2019–2020 Hong Kong protests,Inmedia was widely regarded as the last surviving pro-democratic media outlet in Hong Kong.
