Horia is a genus of beetles in the family Meloidae. They are placed in a tribe Horiini which includes two other genera Synhoria and Cissites . [1]
Some species in the genus live in the brood colonies of Xylocopa bees. [2] Horia maculata was introduced to Hawaii to control Xylocopa but the beetles did not establish a stable population. [3]
The Spanish fly is an aposematic emerald-green beetle in the blister beetle family (Meloidae). It is distributed across Eurasia.
Cantharidin is an odorless, colorless fatty substance of the terpenoid class, which is secreted by many species of blister beetles. Its main current use in pharmacology is treating molluscum contagiosum and warts topically. It is a burn agent and poisonous in large doses, and has been historically used as aphrodisiacs. In its natural form, cantharidin is secreted by the male blister beetle, and given to the female as a copulatory gift during mating. Afterwards, the female beetle covers her eggs with it as a defense against predators.
Carpenter bees are species in the genus Xylocopa of the subfamily Xylocopinae. The genus includes some 500 bees in 31 subgenera. The common name "carpenter bee" derives from their nesting behavior; nearly all species burrow into hard plant material such as dead wood or bamboo. The main exceptions are species in the subgenus Proxylocopa, which dig nesting tunnels in suitable soil.
Blister beetles are beetles of the family Meloidae, so called for their defensive secretion of a blistering agent, cantharidin. About 7,500 species are known worldwide. Many are conspicuous and some are aposematically colored, announcing their toxicity to would-be predators.
Lansdown Guilding was a theologian and naturalist. He is best known for his works on the flora and fauna of St Vincent in particular and on the Caribbean in general. He wrote numerous illustrated papers for journals of scholarly societies in England including the first descriptions of velvet worms and scale insects in the ground pearl family.
Epicauta is a genus of beetles in the blister beetle family, Meloidae. The genus was first scientifically described in 1834 by Pierre François Marie Auguste Dejean. Epicauta is distributed nearly worldwide, with species native to all continents except Australia and Antarctica. Surveys have found the genus to be particularly diverse in northern Arizona in the United States. Few species occur in the Arctic, with none farther north than the southern Northwest Territory of Canada.
Lytta is a genus of blister beetles in the family Meloidae. There are about 70 described species in North America, and over 100 species worldwide.
H. maculata may refer to:
Berberomeloe is a genus within the tribe Lyttini of the family Meloidae, the oil or blister beetles. It includes two species, the red-striped oil beetle, Berberomeloe majalis, and the less flamboyant Berberomeloe insignis.
Berberomeloe majalis, the red-striped oil beetle, is an insect in the genus Berberomeloe, in the family of Blister Beetles. It is native to the western Mediterranean Basin.
Xylocopa darwini, the Galápagos carpenter bee, is the only native species of bee in the Galápagos Islands, to which it is endemic. Altogether, only three species of bee are found in the islands. This species found on 75% of the largest islands. It is sexually dimorphic and is known for its complex behavior. As the only native bee, Xylocopa darwini serves as an important primary pollinator within the plant-pollinator network of the archipelago.
Lytta navajo is a species of blister beetle in the family Meloidae. It is found in North America.
Lytta reticulata is a species of blister beetle in the family Meloidae. It is found in North America.
Tricrania is a genus of blister beetles in the family Meloidae. There are at least two described species in Tricrania.
Epicauta maculata, the spotted blister beetle, is a species of blister beetle in the family Meloidae. It is found in Central America and North America.
Tegrodera is a genus of beetles known as iron cross blister beetles and soldier blister beetles. They are in the family Meloidae. There are three described species in Tegrodera.
Cissites is a genus of blister beetles in the family Meloidae. There are at least four described species in Cissites.
Horia debyi, is a species of blister beetle found in Sri Lanka, Singapore, Brunei and Malaysia.
Horia fabriciana, is a species of blister beetle found in India, Sri Lanka, Israel and Egypt.
Cissites maculata is a species of blister beetle that lives in the Neotropical realm.
