Ice hockey in the People's Republic of China is a minor sport that is gaining popularity quickly in the country. [1] [2] [3] [4] The history of ice hockey in China dates back to the mid-20th century. The Chinese Ice Hockey Association acts as the governing body for the sport in the country. China has men's, women's, and junior national teams that compete against other national teams. The China national ice hockey teams made major preparations for improvements in order to be competitive for the 2022 Winter Olympics. [5] [6] [7] [8] [9]

The Chinese Ice Hockey Championship is an national ice hockey championship that is played annually by amateur teams throughout China. The Chinese Ice Hockey Championship was first held in 1953.

Professional ice hockey

Founded in 2016, Kunlun Red Star is presently the only professional men's ice hockey team based in China. [10] Based in Beijing, Kunlun Red Star plays in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), a professional ice hockey league with teams based in Belarus, Kazakhstan, Latvia, and Russia.

Kunlun Red Star also owns a professional women's ice hockey team, Shenzhen KRS Vanke Rays, based in Shenzhen. Established in 2017, KRS Vanke Rays played in the Canadian Women's Hockey League, with teams based in Canada and the United States.

From 2004 to 2017, several men's ice hockey teams based in China played in Asia League Ice Hockey, a professional league made up of teams from Japan, South Korea, and the Russian Far East.

In 2015, Andong Song became the first Chinese-national drafted by a National Hockey League (NHL) team, a men's professional league consisting of teams from Canada, and the United States. Song was drafted by the New York Islanders in the 6th round (172nd overall) in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. [11] [12] [13]

In 2019, Rudi Ying became the first Chinese-native to score a goal in the KHL. [14] An impending domestic league has been proposed by the Chinese Ice Hockey Association. The league is assumed to consist of eight clubs; four being the Kunlun Red Star, Jilin City Investment, Beijing Shougang and Zhongshang Hokay. [15]

Liu Zhixin is a Chinese ice hockey player and member of the Chinese national team, currently playing in the Chinese Women's Ice Hockey League (WCIHL) with Shenzhen KRS. A two-time Olympian, she was the youngest member of the Chinese delegation at the 2010 Winter Olympics, where she represented the country in the women's ice hockey tournament, and also represented China in the women's ice hockey tournament at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. Her participation in 2010 at age 16 years, 294 days made her the second-youngest player to ever participate in the Olympic women's ice hockey tournament, after Anna Prugova of Russia, who also debuted at the 2010 Olympics.

Yu Baiwei, also known by the Western name Berry Yu, is a Chinese ice hockey player and captain of the Chinese national team and of Shenzhen KRS in the Chinese Women's Ice Hockey League (WCHIL). A three-time medalist at the Asian Winter Games, she represented China in the women's ice hockey tournament at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and in the women's ice hockey tournament at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.

Jessica Wong, also known by the Chinese name Wang Yuting, is a Canadian ice hockey player, a defenceman. She most recently played with the Chinese national ice hockey team and in the Zhenskaya Hockey League (ZhHL) with the KRS Vanke Rays during the 2021–22 season. She was drafted first overall in the 2013 CWHL Draft by the Calgary Inferno and played four seasons in the Canadian Women's Hockey League (CWHL).

The Zhenskaya Hockey League or ZhHL, officially called the Women's Hockey League (WHL), is a professional ice hockey league in Russia, currently comprising eight teams. The league is also known as the PariMatch Women's Hockey League for sponsorship reasons.

He returned to Beijing in 2016, becoming the first Chinese-born player to play in the KHL. Internationally he has represented China at both the junior and senior levels. Ying is also the son of actor Ying Da and the grandson of actor Ying Ruocheng.

Zachary Yuen is a Chinese-Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman. He is currently an unrestricted free agent who most recently played for Kunlun Red Star of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). Yuen was one of the first players of Chinese descent to be drafted in the NHL Entry Draft.

The 2017–18 CWHL season is the 11th season of the Canadian Women's Hockey League. This is also the first season in which the teams pay their players a salary. It would also prove to be the final full season in which Brenda Andress served as commissioner of the league, tendering her resignation on July 18, 2019.

The Shenzhen Vanke Rays were a women's ice hockey team that played in the 2017–18 season of the Canadian Women's Hockey League (CWHL). They were based in Shenzhen, Guangdong, China and played at the Shenzhen Dayun Arena. The team was developed along with the Kunlun Red Star WIH as part of the Chinese Ice Hockey Association (CIHA) in an effort to grow interest in ice hockey in China in preparation for the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. Both teams debuted in the 2017–18 CWHL season. The general manager was Shirley Hon, who was named to the position on August 18, 2017.

Zhu Rui is a Chinese ice hockey player and member of the Chinese national ice hockey team, currently playing in the Chinese Women's Ice Hockey League (WCIHL) with Shenzhen KRS. She previously played in the Canadian Women's Hockey League (CWHL) with Kunlun Red Star WIH in the 2017–18 season and the Shenzhen KRS Vanke Rays in the 2018–19 season, and in the Zhenskaya Hockey League (ZhHL) with the KRS Vanke Rays.
