Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design and Manufacturing, Jabalpur (IIITDM Jabalpur), also known as Pandit Dwarka Prasad Mishra Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design and Manufacturing, [3] is an Indian Institute of Information Technology in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, India that focuses on Information Technology enabled Design and Manufacturing.
IIITDM Jabalpur was founded in 2005. In 2014, the Parliament declared it to be an Institute of National Importance under IIIT Act. [4]
PDPM IIITDM Jabalpur was the third Indian Institute of Technology, established on January 24, 2005 by the Ministry of Education (India) under Madhya Pradesh Society Registration Act 1973.
The foundation stone of the Institute was laid by Late Shri Arjun Singh, the then Minister of Human Resource Development (MHRD) on February 7, 2005.
On May 3, 2006 a land of 250 acres near Dumna Airport of Jabalpur was identified by the State Government of Madhya Pradesh and was handed over to the Institute. Construction work of Phase I buildings was started in 2007 and was completed in 2009.
The first academic session of PDPM IIITDM Jabalpur started from August 2005 from the campus of Jabalpur Engineering College until its own permanent campus was ready. The Institute started operating from the temporary location at the IT Bhawan of the Jabalpur Engineering College. Professor Sanjay G. Dhande, Director, IIT Kanpur was given the additional charge as the Director of the Institute.
The institute was allotted 260 acres (1.1 km2) acres in close proximity to the Jabalpur Airport and Dumna Nature Reserve Park, in 2006 following the appointment of Dr. Sanjeev Bhargava as director.
Construction of the (Phase-I buildings) Core-Lab-Complex and Residencial-Hostels started thereafter and was completed in June 2009.
The IIITDM Jabalpur campus, having an area of about 260 acres, is located in Dumna, towards East of Jabalpur, between the Dumna Nature reserve and Jabalpur Airport. The campus is divided into clusters of buildings. The academic area consists chiefly of the LHTC and the CLC, which house all the departmental annexes and cabins of faculty. The LHTC also houses the Design Studio.
The Lecture Hall and Tutorial Complex (LHTC) has cabins of faculty from the Natural Sciences (NS) and Liberal Arts (LA) departments. Core Lab Complex (CLC) houses cabins of faculty from ECE dept. and Mech dept. along with a variety of laboratories.
The academic area and residential area is divided by a slope, with the graffiti wall alongside that is redrawn for every iteration of the Techno-Design fest, Abhikalpan. The graffiti wall
Due to its proximity to the Dumna Nature Reserve Park, the campus has significant green cover and is blessed with clear skies round the year. The proximity of the campus to the Nature Reserve has also led to occasional sightings of peacocks and leopards. [5] [6]
The campus as of 2023 has seven operational hostels :
Almost all of the hostels have their own functional Badminton courts, TT rooms and TV rooms, apart from the central Student Activity Center, which houses the Institute Gym, Carrom Room, Chess Room, Table Tennis Court and the Badminton Court.
All planned hostels have been constructed. Space between the Central Mess and Vasishtha Hostel was originally reserved for Hall of Residence-2, but now has been temporarily converted to an athletic ground. [7]
The Institute also has its own cricket ground, with the pitch measuring around 83 ft and the radius of the ground being approx. 150 ft. An ellipse shaped ground between the Panini Hostels and the Student Activity center encompasses dedicated fields for Cricket, Football, Kabaddi and Athletics. The ellipse-ground has radii of around 288 ft x 200 ft.
Apart from the elliptical field, IIITDM Jabalpur also boasts of dedicated grounds for Lawn Tennis, Volleyball and Basketball between the Panini Hostels and Aryabhatta Hostel (H3).
The institute also has an Open Air Theatre, right in front of the grand LHTC (abbreviation for the Lecture Hall and Tutorial Complex) which serves as an events-venue round the year for cultural performances.
The institute conducts educational programmes leading to the degree of Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.), Master of Technology (M.Tech.), Bachelor of Design (B.Des.), Master of Design (M.Des.) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD.) in various subject domains.
PhD's are offered by the following departments
The largest discipline by student-intake, the CSE discipline was set up in 2005 and offers undergraduate (B.Tech), postgraduate (M.Tech), and research programs (PhD). [8]
Main focus of the discipline is in the following fields :
Focuses on hands-on training and research in the frontier areas of Electronics & Communication Engineering with broad focus on IT enabled design and manufacturing. [9] The labs under the department are as follows :
Established in 2005, it offers undergrad programs in Mechanical Engineering and Smart Manufacturing and Master and Doctoral Programmes at PG level. The department is known for maintaining active research groups to carry out funded collaborative and interdisciplinary research, having state of the art research facilities to support academic programs and research. [10]
One of the earliest disciplines, being an integral part of IIITDM Jabalpur since its inception. [11] Physics and Mathematics are the sub-disciplines of NS, with special focus on the following :
The discipline, which started in the year 2008, has modern facilities like Epilog Laser Cutting, 3D Printer, Color Laser Jet Printer, Vertical Plastic Injection Molding, Universal Woodworking, Vacuum Forming, Chroma Studio, VR Kit, Eye Tracking System, Heart Rate Monitor, Bicycle ergometer, with support staff skilled in wood, metal, polymer, FRPs and composite fabrication provide an incredible hands-on practical training to the students.
It is continuously emphasized at the Institute level that students get an international exposure in design practice. The Institute is a member of the World Wide Consortium on Design Services with TU Delft Netherlands, EAFIT University Medellin, Colombia, and Vaal University of Technology South Africa. [12]
The newest department of the institute was established in August 2021, with a variety of classes to add to a multi-disciplinary education. [13]
Undergraduate Students are admitted to these courses on the basis of their All India Rank in the Joint Entrance Examination (Main) (JEE MAIN) and the UCEED. The JEE results are used for admitting students into the BTech program for Computer Science Engineering, Electronics and Communications Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Smart Manufacturing.
UCEED results are used to admit students into the B.Des program. [14]
For admissions to PG level courses, the GATE scores are considered for MTech programs; and CEED scores are considered along with the CPI (or Equivalent Grading System, e.g. CGPA) maintained throughout the Graduate course undertaken by the student. [15]
The seat matrix for UG courses are as follows: [16]
