Indonesia hosted and took part in the 2018 Asian Para Games which was held in Jakarta from 6 to 13 October 2018. The Indonesian contingent for the games consisted of 300 athletes and 125 officials. [4] As hosts, Indonesia were targeting to place eight overall in the medal tally and aimed to win at least 16 gold medals. [5]

Both events had adopted the strategy used by the Olympic and Paralympic Games of having both games in the same city. However, the exclusion of Asian Para Games from Asian Games host city contract meant that both events run independently of each other. The Games are recognized by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and are described as the second largest multi-sport event after the Paralympic Games.

The closing ceremony was held exactly a week later; Saturday, 13 October 2018 at the nearby, far smaller Gelora Bung Karno Madya Stadium. Both ceremonies were started on 19:00 local time (UTC+7) and ended around 22:00.
