The International Association of Jesuit Universities (IAJU) is an association of higher education institutions run by the Society of Jesus. It was founded in 2018, upon the approval of Rev. Fr. Arturo Sosa SJ, Father General of the society. The current chair of the IAJU board is Fr. Michael Garanzini, SJ.

Contents

IAJU is "the international advisory and coordinating body to the Secretariat of Jesuit Higher Education and, through him, to Father General and his Assistants in matters related to higher education and the intellectual apostolate," according to its charter. [2] It was established during an international assembly of Jesuit higher educational institutions at the University of Deusto in Bilbao, Spain. [3]

IAJU is part of the Jesuits' higher education apostolate, and its main mission is to "contribute to the progress" of the said apostolate to "promote the development of a more just and humane world for the greater honor and glory of God."

Membership

Members of the IAJU come from the six educational associations [4] representing geographical areas where the Society of Jesus operates. These include more than 200 Jesuit-run higher education institutions in more than 50 countries. [5]

Founded by Roman Catholic religious order of the Society of Jesus in 1913, the University has grown from its 3 original academic departments of Philosophy, German Literature, and Commerce to 9 undergraduate Faculties and 10 Graduate Schools, with over 13,900 students in total at the present moment.

Comillas Pontifical University

Comillas Pontifical University is a private Catholic higher education institution run by the Spanish Province of the Society of Jesus in Madrid Spain.

Fr. Pedro Arrupe,S.J. was a Spanish Basque Jesuit priest who served as the 28th Superior General of the Society of Jesus from 1965 to 1983. He has been called a second founder of the Society as he led the Jesuits in the implementation of the Second Vatican Council, especially with regard to faith that does justice and preferential option for the poor.

Roman College

The Roman College was a school established by St. Ignatius of Loyola in 1551, just 11 years after he founded the Society of Jesus (1540). It quickly grew to include classes from elementary school through university level. It moved to several different locations to accommodate its growing student population. With the patronage of Pope Gregory XIII, from 1582 to 1584 the final seat of the Roman College was built near the center of Rome's most historic Pigna district, on what today is called Piazza del Collegio Romano. The college remained at this location for 286 years until the Capture of Rome in 1870. In 1873, the remaining philosophical and theological faculties of the Roman College formed the Gregorian University, named after the benefactor of the College in the sixteenth century and thus establishing the link with the previous institution.

Ateneo de Naga University

The Ateneo de Naga University, also referred to by its acronym AdNU, is a private Catholic Jesuit basic and higher education institution run by the Philippine Province of the Society of Jesus in Naga City, Camarines Sur, Philippines. It was established in 1940 when the Jesuits took over the administration of the diocesan school, Camarines Sur Catholic Academy. The Jesuits renamed the school Ateneo de Naga after taking control. The Jesuits were naming all the schools that they were opening at that time Ateneo. Ateneo de Naga was the fourth school named Ateneo by the Jesuits. Typical of universities in the Philippines, AdNU has primary and secondary departments, which are both coeducational.

Xavier Institute of Engineering Engineering college in Mumbai, India

The Xavier Institute of Engineering (XIE), a sister institution of St. Xavier College, Mumbai, Fort, is an engineering college in central Mumbai, established in the year 2005 to give a quality technical education to all, with a preferential option for economically backward and Christians . The institute is managed by the Society of Jesus, Jesuits, and is affiliated to Mumbai University, approved by AICTE New Delhi, and recognized by Directorate of Technical Education, Government of Maharashtra . XIE is a member of AJIT, the Association of Jesuit Institutes of Technology and IAJES. It is accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council of India . Since XIE is affiliated to Mumbai University, it follows its syllabus and examination system.

The Universidad de San Ignacio was a university in the city of Manila which existed in the Spanish Philippines. It was founded in 1590 and is one of the earliest educational institutions built by Europeans in East Asia when it was established by Spanish Jesuits headed by Fr. Antonio Sedeño, S.J. The school ceased its existence following the expulsion of the Jesuits in the archipelago in 1768.

Thomas V. Kunnunkal is an Indian Jesuit priest, educationist and writer. He is a former chairman of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), a former director of the Indian Social Institute, New Delhi (2008-2009), and the President of the Islamic Studies Association, a non-governmental organization promoting religious harmony. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri in 1974.

Arturo Sosa

Arturo Marcelino Sosa Abascal is a Venezuelan priest who is the thirty-first and present Superior General of the Society of Jesus. He was elected Superior General by the Society's 36th General Congregation on 14 October 2016, succeeding Adolfo Nicolás. He is the first person born in Latin America to lead the Jesuits.

The oldest universities, colleges, vocational schools and the first modern public education system in Asia were created during the Spanish colonial period. The earliest schools were founded by Spanish Catholic missionaries. By the time Spain was replaced by the United States as the colonial power, Filipinos were among the most educated subjects in all of Asia. Of the many educational institutions established during the colonial era, only a few remain extant today, such as the University of Santo Tomas (1611), Colegio de San Juan de Letran (1620), Real Colegio de Santa Potenciana (1590), Universidad de San Ignacio (1590), Colegio de San Ildefonso (1595), Santa Isabel College Manila (1632), and the Universidad de San Felipe de Austria (1640), among others.
