Iran–Thailand relations refer to the bilateral relations between Iran and Thailand. Iran has an embassy in Bangkok while Thailand has an embassy in Tehran.

History

Relations between the two countries began when visits of Persian diplomatic delegations to Siam are attested as early as 1685. [1] Indo-Persians made up the largest group of Muslims from the 16th to 18th centuries. Influential Persian families like the Bunnag dominated Thai courts for some time.[ citation needed ]

Following the lifting of sanctions in 2016, as a result of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, Iran and Thailand maintain closer economic relations. [2]

Following the death of Bhumibol Adulyadej, the King of Thailand on October 13, 2016, Iranian president Hassan Rouhani offered condolences to the Thai people and their government in a letter sent to Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha saying “the Islamic Republic of Iran always regards the Kingdom of Thailand as an age-old friend and partner and hopes to see the expansion of bilateral relations in all fields". [3]

Transport

Thai Airways International announced in June 2016 that the airline would establish a new route between Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport and Tehran's Imam Khomeini International Airport. This comes after AirAsia X introduced that same route. [4] [5] The first inaugural flight was launched on October 1, 2016. [6]

State visits

On October 8, 2016, Iranian president Hassan Rouhani arrived in Bangkok for the second Asia Cooperation Dialogue summit. President Rouhani met with Prime Minister of Thailand Prayut Chan-o-cha and discussed economic cooperation between the two countries.

Economic relations

Iran is looking into the Thai Rice Standard in order to start importing the product. Thailand also targets to export at least 700,000 tons of rice to Iran every year. In return, Thailand will start receiving imported crude oil and natural gas from Iran and wants to invest in energy businesses which include alternative energy projects. [7]

Tourism

Thailand has become a popular destination for Iranian medical tourists. [8] However, due to numerous incidents of methamphetamine smuggling, Iranians coming to Thailand fall under heavy suspicion from the police. [9]

There is a community of Thai people of Iranian descent who still practice Shia Islam in many districts throughout Bangkok, such as Yan Nawa, Bueng Kum, Saphan Sung, and Min Buri, as well as parts of Chachoengsao Province.

Prayut Chan-o-cha is a former Thai politician and army officer who became the 29th prime minister of Thailand after seizing power in the 2014 coup d'état and served until 2023. He was concurrently the minister of defence in his own government from 2019 to 2023. Prayut served as commander-in-chief of the Royal Thai Army from 2010 to 2014 and led the coup d'état which installed the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), the military junta which governed Thailand between 22 May 2014 and 10 July 2019.

Filipino–Thai relations refers to the bilateral relations between the Philippines and Thailand. The Philippines established formal diplomatic relations with Thailand on June 14, 1949. The relations between the two are described as warm and friendly. Thailand is one of the Philippines' major trade partners and one of the Philippines' sources of rice through Thai exports. Bilateral relations continues to be strengthened through talks and agreements on economic, security and cultural matters including concerns on rice trade, fight on drugs and human trafficking. Thailand has an embassy in Manila and an honorary consulate in Cebu, while the Philippines maintains an embassy in Bangkok. Both countries are members of ASEAN and the Non-Aligned Movement.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Hassan Rouhani</span> President of Iran from 2013 to 2021

Hassan Rouhani is an Iranian politician who served as the seventh president of Iran from 2013 to 2021. He is also a sharia lawyer ("Wakil"), academic, former diplomat and Islamic cleric. He served as a member of Iran's Assembly of Experts from 1999 to 2024. He was a member of the Expediency Council from 1991 to 2013, and also was a member of the Supreme National Security Council from 1989 to 2021. Rouhani was deputy speaker of the fourth and fifth terms of the Parliament of Iran (Majlis) and Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council from 1989 to 2005. In the latter capacity, he was the country's top negotiator with the EU three, UK, France, and Germany, on nuclear technology in Iran, and has also served as a Shia mujtahid, and economic trade negotiator.

Bhumibol Adulyadej, King of Thailand, died on 13 October 2016 at the age of 88 after a long illness, leading to reactions within Thailand and around the world. Many Thais paid tribute to the king and his 70-year reign, as did other world leaders and monarchs who expressed their condolences. Media outlets in Thailand suspended their programming and broadcast tributes to the late king or switched to monochrome.

On 8 January 2017, Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, the fourth President of Iran and the country's Chairman of Expediency Discernment Council, died at the age of 82 after suffering a heart attack. He was transferred unconscious to a hospital in Tajrish, north Tehran. Attempts at cardiopulmonary resuscitation for more than an hour trying to revive him were unsuccessful and he died at 19:30 local time (UTC+3:30).

Palestine–Thailand relations were formalized on 1 August 2012, after the Kingdom of Thailand recognized the State of Palestine as a sovereign state on 18 January 2012. Palestine has a non-resident embassy in Kuala Lumpur, which is accredited to the Thai side, and the Thai embassy in Amman is accredited to the Palestinian side. Both countries are members of the Asia Cooperation Dialogue and the Non-Aligned Movement.
