Justice Aamer Farooq is the current Chief Justice, having taken oath on 11 November 2022. [3]

History

The Court was originally established on 14 August 2007 by Presidential Order of Pervez Musharraf, the military ruler at the time. The Court ceased to exist on 31 July 2009 by a decision of the Supreme Court of Pakistan following Constitution Petition No. 09 and 08 of 2009. [4]

The Court was re-established by the Islamabad High Court Act, 2010 [5] following the 18th Amendment to the Constitution of Pakistan. President Asif Ali Zardari administered the oath to the first Chief Justice, Iqbal Hameed ur Rahman on 3 January 2011 at the Governor's House, Karachi. [6]

Current composition

The Islamabad High Court is headed by a Chief Justice. The bench consists of six Justices and additional judges. The mandatory retirement age of the Chief Justice and Justices is 62 years. The Additional Judges were initially appointed for one year. After that, their services could either be extended or they could be confirmed or they were retired. Sardar Muhammad Aslam was a Pakistani jurist, lawyer, and member justice of the Lahore High Court. He was also a justice of the Supreme Court of Pakistan and a former chief justice of the Islamabad High Court. However, as result of Constitution Petition No. 09 of 2009 and Constitution Petition No. 08 of 2009 in the Supreme Court of Pakistan, on 31 July 2009, the court held his elevation to Supreme Court as unconstitutional, void ab initio and of no legal effect. In addition in the same decision, the institution of Islamabad High Court was held as unconstitutional and of no legal effect.

Iqbal Hameedur Rahman, was a senior judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan. He is of Bengali origin and born in Dacca, East Pakistan. He served as the Justice of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, as appointed in this post on 24 February 2013 and voluntarily tendered his resignation on 24 October 2016.

Aamer Farooq is a Pakistani jurist who is currently serving as a Chief Justice of Islamabad High Court since 11 November 2022 and also been Justice of the Islamabad High Court from 31 December 2014 to 10 November 2022.

Mohsin Akhtar Kayani is a Pakistani jurist who has been Justice of the Islamabad High Court since 22 December 2015.

Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri is a Pakistani jurist who has been Justice of the Islamabad High Court, since 28 December 2020.

Riaz Ahmad Khan was a Pakistani judge who served as the 15th chief justice of the Federal Shariat Court from 7 March 2015 to 14 May 2017. Prior to his retirement from legal services in May 2014, he served as Islamabad High Court judge. He was appointed as additional deputy prosecutor at the National Accountability Bureau and a member of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Bar Council in 1999. He also served as acting chief justice of Islamabad High Court in 2013.

Arbab Muhammad Tahir is a Pakistani jurist who has been Justice of the Islamabad High Court, since 17 December 2021.

Saman Rafat Imtiaz is a Pakistani jurist and has held the position of Justice at the Islamabad High Court (IHC) since 17 December 2021. She is the second woman judge to be appointed to the IHC, following Lubna Saleem Pervez.

Babar Sattar, serves as a Pakistani jurist and has held the position of Justice at the Islamabad High Court (IHC) since 30 December 2020.

Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan is a Pakistani jurist who has been Justice of the Islamabad High Court since 17 December 2021 .
