James W. Merritt Jr. is a Republican member of the Indiana Senate, representing the 31st District since 1991. He was first elected to the Indiana Senate in 1990. [3] He was reelected to the state Senate in 2010, defeating then-Marion County Sheriff Frank J. Anderson by a margin of 52% to 44%.

The Indiana Senate is the upper house of the Indiana General Assembly, the state legislature of the U.S. state of Indiana. The Senate is composed of 50 members representing an equal number of constituent districts. Senators serve four-year terms without term limits. According to the 2010 census, the average State Senator represents 129,676 people.

Frank Anderson served as Sheriff of Marion County, Indiana from 2003 until 2011 when he was succeeded by Sheriff John R. Layton, and is the first black individual to serve in that post. He is the second black Sheriff in Indiana after Oatess E. Archey.

Merritt received his bachelor of arts in political science from Indiana University in 1981. [4] Professionally, Sen. Merritt is vice president of corporate affairs for the Indiana Railroad Company. [3] He is divorced and has two daughters and one son. [3]

Merritt was elected chair of the Marion County Republican Party in March 2017. [5] He replaced Mike McQuillen. [6] He resigned as County Party Chair in December 2018. [7] Bryce Carpenter took over as interim county GOP chair. [8]

Marion County, Indiana County in the United States

Marion County is a county in the U.S. state of Indiana. Census 2010 recorded a population of 903,393, making it the largest county in the state and 55th most populated county in the country, greater than the population of six states. The county seat is Indianapolis, the state capital and largest city. Marion County is consolidated with Indianapolis through an arrangement known as Unigov.

On January 10, 2019, Merritt announced that he was running for Mayor of Indianapolis in 2019. [9] He won the primary on May 7, 2019. [10] [11]

An election for Mayor of Indianapolis will be held on November 5, 2019. Joe Hogsett, the incumbent mayor, is seeking reelection for a second term in office.

In the 2014 session, Merritt chaired the Utilities Committee. His was a majority member of these committees: Homeland Security, Transportation and Veterans Affairs; Joint Rules; Public Policy; Rules and Legislative Procedure; and also the Transportation sub-committee. [12]

Joseph Hadden Hogsett is an American attorney, prosecutor, and politician who is the 49th mayor of Indianapolis. Hogsett served as the Secretary of State of Indiana from 1989 to 1994 and as the Chairman of the Indiana Democratic Party from 2003 to 2004. He was the Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate in 1992, for Indiana's 2nd congressional district in 1994 and for Attorney General of Indiana in 2004. He most recently served as the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana from 2010 to 2014. On November 3, 2015, he won the race for Mayor of Indianapolis in the 2015 election.

Jim Banks American politician

James Edward Banks is an American politician who is the U.S. Representative for Indiana's 3rd congressional district. A Republican, he previously served as a member of the Indiana Senate. Banks was first elected to serve in the state senate for the 17th district in 2010, and upon military deployment to Afghanistan, he took a leave of absence from the state senate since September 2014. Invoking an Indiana state law which allows state and local officeholders to take leaves of absence during active duty military service, Banks was temporarily replaced by his wife, Amanda Banks, who held the office for the senate's 2015 legislative session. He returned to Indiana from overseas duty on April 14, 2015 and resumed his duties as state senator on May 8, 2015. On May 3, 2016 he won the primary election for the Republican nomination for Indiana's Third Congressional District.
