James Anthony Sullivan (born 5 January 1982) is an Australian politician who has served as the member for Stafford in the Queensland Legislative Assembly since 2020. [1] [2] [3]
Sullivan was promoted to Assistant Minister for Justice and Veterans' Affairs by then-premier Steven Miles after the 2023 Queensland Labor Party leadership election. He served in this position until the state election on 26 October 2024.
Sullivan was re-elected as the member for Stafford on a 55.3% two party preferred vote,albeit suffering a 6.6% swing to his challenger Fiona Hammond,long serving councillor for the Marchant Ward. [4]
Media reports began to emerge shortly after the election of the Queensland Police Service attending to the member of Stafford's Kedron address the day after the October state election due to an alleged domestic incident with concerns over his welfare and relationship with alcohol. [5]
On 12 May 2025,Sullivan was removed from the Labor Party caucus following comments from the government in relation to previous allegations made against him listed above,he remains as a member of the party. After returning to work from a leave of absence he was also alleged to have failed to comply with return to work obligations by the Labor leader. [6] [7]
He is the son of Terry Sullivan who also served as the member for Stafford from 2001 to 2006.
