John George Ajaka (born 13 January 1956),is a former Australian politician who served as a New South Wales Minister in the O'Farrell and Baird governments. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council from 2007 to 2021,representing the Liberal Party. He was the first Liberal Party Lebanese Australian member of an Australian parliament. [1]
Ajaka served as the Minister for Ageing and Minister for Disability Services from August 2013 to January 2017. He was also appointed as Minister for the Illawarra from 2013 to 2015 in the O'Farrell and first Baird ministries. [2]
Following the 2015 election,Ajaka was appointed Minister for Multiculturalism in the second Baird government. [3] [4] [5] [2] He was not appointed to the Berejikilian Ministry in 2017,instead being appointed as President of the New South Wales Legislative Council until March 2021.
Ajaka was born in Bulli,New South Wales,to migrant parents from Lebanon. [6] He was schooled at St Joseph's Primary School and Marist College Kogarah where he served in the Army Cadets,graduating as the second-highest-ranking officer in his group,and served briefly in the Australian Army Reserve. He subsequently studied law and opened his own practice in Rockdale. [7] He was later elected as a City of Rockdale councillor,serving in that role until his election to parliament. [1]
Ajaka was elected to the Legislative Council at the 2007 state election. [2] [8] He made his inaugural speech to the Legislative Council on 9 May 2007,in which he called for greater acceptance of migrants within Australian society and declared his intention to oppose racial prejudice and injustice in his role as an MP. [9] He also strongly criticised the police practice of referring to the ethnic backgrounds of criminals,contravening his own party's policy on the matter. [10]
Ajaka was appointed as the Minister for the Illawarra and the Minister for Disability Services on 2 August 2013;and became of member of the O'Farrell cabinet. [11] [12] Due to the resignation of Barry O'Farrell as Premier, [13] and the subsequent ministerial reshuffle by Mike Baird,the new Liberal Leader, [5] in April 2014 in addition to his existing responsibilities as a minister,Ajaka was appointed as the Minister for Ageing. Following the 2015 state election,Ajaka was appointed as the Minister for Ageing,the Minister for Disability Services and the Minister for Multiculturalism,and the Leader of the Liberal Party in the Legislative Council in the new second Baird government. [3]
In February 2017,he was elected by the Legislative Council to be the President of the New South Wales Legislative Council. He was re-elected during the opening of the 57th Parliament on 7 May 2019. In February 2021,he announced his intention to retire from the NSW Parliament which took effect on 31 March 2021. [15] He resigned as President of the Legislative Council on 24 March 2021. [16]
John Ajaka was appointed as the CEO of Liverpool City Council in December 2022. [17] The council voted to terminate Mr Ajaka's employment at the Council meeting on the 29 May 2024. [18] An investigation from the Office of Local Government identified "areas of concern" and concluded that Ajaka had been "denied procedural fairness". [19]
Barry Robert O'Farrell is an Australian former politician who was Australia's High Commissioner to India and non-resident Ambassador to Bhutan from February 2020 to 30 June 2023. O'Farrell was the 43rd Premier of New South Wales and Minister for Western Sydney from 2011 to 2014. He was the Leader of the New South Wales Liberal Party from 2007 to 2014,and was a Member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1995 to 2015,representing Northcott until 1999 and representing Ku-ring-gai on the Upper North Shore of Sydney from 1999 to 2015. He was President and Independent Board Chair of Diabetes Australia,Chair of the Wests Tigers Rugby League Football Club and CEO of Racing Australia Ltd until taking up his role in India.
Duncan John Gay,an Australian politician,was the Vice-President of the Executive Council of New South Wales and the Leader of the Government in the Legislative Council from May 2014 to January 2017;and the Minister for Roads,Maritime and Freight from April 2015 to January 2017. Gay was the Leader of the Nationals in the Legislative Council until January 2017 and was a member of the Council from 1988 to 2017,representing The Nationals.
Matthew Ryan Mason-Cox is an Australian politician who served as President of the New South Wales Legislative Council from 4 May 2021 until 9 May 2023. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council for the Liberal Party from 28 September 2006 until 3 March 2023,with a short two-week stint as an Independent in May 2021. Mason-Cox was the Minister for Fair Trading between May 2014 and April 2015 in the first Baird ministry and served as Leader of the Liberal Party of Australia in the Legislative Council during 2014 and 2015.
Andrew James Constance is an Australian politician who represented Bega for the Liberal Party in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly between 2003 and December 2021.
Anthony John Roberts is an Australian politician. Roberts is a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly representing Lane Cove for the Liberal Party since 2003. He is the longest-serving Member of the Legislative Assembly and so holds the honorary title of "Father of the House."

Jillian Gell Skinner is an Australian politician who was the New South Wales Minister for Health in the Baird government. Skinner was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly representing North Shore for the Liberal Party from 1994 to 2017 and was the Deputy Leader of the New South Wales Liberal Party from 2007 to 2014. Between 2011 and 2015 Skinner also served as the Minister for Medical Research. On 27 January 2017,Skinner announced her intention to resign from the ministry and from Parliament.
Michael Joseph Gallacher is an Australian former politician. He was the Minister for Police and Emergency Services and Vice-President of the Executive Council in the O'Farrell government and Baird government from 2011 to 2014;the Minister for the Central Coast from December 2013 to May 2014;and the Minister for Industrial Relations in the Baird government from April to May 2014. Gallacher has been a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council since 1996. He was the Minister for the Hunter between 2011 and 2014.
Robert Gordon Stokes is an Australian retired politician. Stokes served as the New South Wales Minister for Infrastructure,the Minister for Cities,and the Minister for Active Transport in the Perrottet ministry between 21 December 2021 and 25 March 2023. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly representing Pittwater for the Liberal Party between 2007 and 2023.
Donald Thomas Harwin is an Australian politician. He was the New South Wales Special Minister of State and the Minister for the Public Service and Employee Relations,Aboriginal Affairs,and the Arts in the second Berejiklian ministry since April 2019;and the Vice-President of the Executive Council,and the Leader of the Government in the Legislative Council since January 2017 in the Berejiklian government. He briefly resigned from his roles with effect from 15 April 2020,however was reinstated on 3 July 2020.
Victor Michael Dominello,is an Australian former politician who was the New South Wales Minister for Customer Service in the second Berejiklian ministry from April 2019,and in the Perrottet ministry until March 2023. Dominello is a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly,representing the electorate of Ryde for the Liberal Party from 2008 until his retirement in 2023.
The 2011 New South Wales state election held on Saturday,26 March 2011. The 16-year-incumbent Labor Party government led by Premier Kristina Keneally was defeated in a landslide by the Liberal–National Coalition opposition led by Barry O'Farrell.

Jai Travers Rowell,an Australian former politician,was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly representing Wollondilly for the Liberal Party from 2011 to 2018. In April 2014 Rowell was appointed as Minister for Mental Health and Assistant Minister for Health during the Cabinet reshuffle under Premier Mike Baird. Under Gladys Berejiklian as Premier,Rowell was appointed as Special Adviser to the Premier and the NSW Government on Science,Industry and Innovation,a first of its kind. Rowell was the first Liberal Indigenous member of the NSW Legislative Assembly. Rowell has been appointed by Western Sydney University as a Fellow of Law.
The 2015 New South Wales state election was held on Saturday 28 March 2015. Members were elected to all 93 seats in the Legislative Assembly using optional preferential voting. Members were also elected to 21 of the 42 seats in the Legislative Council using optional preferential proportional representation voting. The election was conducted by the New South Wales Electoral Commission.
In New South Wales,regional ministers have been appointed since 1995 on a part-time basis as part of the Government of New South Wales. Each minister has other departmental responsibilities,as well as specific responsibilities for one of the regions of New South Wales. The ministries with regional responsibilities first appeared in 2000 during the Carr Labor Government with a position looking after the Central Coast,this would later be expanded by the Iemma Labor Government from 2005 and O'Farrell Coalition Government in 2011 to five different positions including Western Sydney.
