The John F. Kennedy Memorial is located on Ocean Street in Hyannis, Massachusetts. It overlooks Lewis Bay, where President Kennedy often sailed while in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts. The memorial is a large stone wall with a bronze medallion on each side. President Kennedy's left bust profile is on the front medallion, facing the bay. The Great Seal of the United States [1] is on the back, facing Ocean Street. The memorial’s landscaping includes plantings, lawn, a large concrete terrace, bluestone benches, and a reflecting pool and lit fountain that invokes the John F. Kennedy Eternal Flame at Arlington National Cemetery. [2] The reflecting pool is surrounded by bluestone engraved with the quote, “I believe it is important that this country sail and not lie still in the harbor.” It comes from President Kennedy's Radio and Television Report to the American People on the State of the National Economy given August 13, 1962. [3]

The memorial was commissioned by the citizens of Barnstable, Massachusetts and dedicated on July 8, 1966. Donald Durell of Falmouth, Massachusetts was the memorial's architect, and J. Paul Lanza of Simsbury, Connecticut (formerly of Osterville and West Yarmouth, Massachusetts), was its general contractor. [4] The sculptor Agop Minass Agopoff, [5] who Gloria Vanderbilt recommended to President Kennedy's widow Jacqueline, created the bust profile. Jose Greco III, nephew of the dancer Jose Greco, cast the bronze. The John Stevens Shop of Newport, Rhode Island, carved the letters on the wall and around the reflecting pool. Materials were primarily sourced from Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

The memorial is overseen by the Town of Barnstable JFK Memorial Trust Fund Committee, which collects the coins placed in the reflecting pool for youth activities, including sailing. [6] [7] A restoration of the 50-year old memorial is being planned by the Town of Barnstable. [8] [ needs update ]

The Hyannis Armory is located at 225 South Street, Hyannis, Massachusetts. The armory was built in 1958, and hosted Battery D of the 685th AAA Machine Gun Battalion of the Massachusetts Army National Guard. President-elect John F. Kennedy gave his victory speech at the Hyannis Armory on Nov. 9, 1960, the morning he learned he had been elected. The property was nominated for the National Register of Historic Places, but was never listed.

The Lieutenant Joseph Patrick Kennedy Junior Memorial Skating Rink was an ice skating rink in the town of Barnstable, Massachusetts, United States. It was named after the late Joseph P. Kennedy Jr., who was killed when his B-24 Liberator exploded during a bombing mission. The facility also doubled as an ice hockey rink for Barnstable High School. The last public skate occurred on March 22, 2009. It was replaced by the Hyannis Youth and Community Center.

<i>CapeFlyer</i> Seasonal rail service in Massachusetts

The CapeFlyer is a passenger rail service in Massachusetts between Boston and Cape Cod that began in 2013. It is operated by the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority (CCRTA) in collaboration with the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT). The service runs on the weekends, beginning Friday evenings and including holidays, between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend.

Vernon Herbert Coleman was a marine seascape muralist artist and art teacher on Cape Cod. He painted more than 100 murals for the Works Progress Administration.
