John Allan Peterson (born October 22, 1948) is an American former wrestler and Olympic champion in freestyle wrestling. [1]
Peterson grew up in Comstock, Wisconsin, attending nearby Cumberland High School before graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Stout in 1971. [2] [3] He would place fifth at the 1971 NAIA Men's Wrestling Championship as a collegiate wrestler, before jumping levels the following year to make the 1972 USA freestyle wrestling team, where he earned a silver medal in the 82 kg weight class. [4] At the following 1976 Summer Olympics, he won a gold medal at 82 kg. [5] Peterson's brother, Ben Peterson, also competed in both the 1972 and 1976 Summer Olympics, winning a gold medal in 1972 and silver medal in 1976 as a freestyle wrestler.
In 1986, Peterson was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame as a Distinguished Member. [6]
James Paul Montgomery is an American former competition swimmer, four-time Olympic medalist, and former world record-holder. Montgomery was the first man to break the 50-second barrier (49.99) in the 100-meter freestyle, at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Quebec, where he won three gold medals and one bronze.
Zevegiin Oidov is a retired Mongolian wrestler. At the 1976 Summer Olympics he won the silver medal in the freestyle -62 kg class. He also won two world champion titles, in 1974 and 1975 in the -62 kg class. In 1977 competing in the freestyle -68 kg class he came in second, taking the Bronze medal.
Benjamin Lee "Ben" Peterson is a retired American freestyle wrestler. He competed at the 1972 and 1976 Olympics and won a gold and a silver medal, respectively. As a college wrestler, Peterson was a two-time NCAA champion at Iowa State. He founded the "Camp of Champs," which brought in Olympic wrestlers to train with high schoolers. Peterson also coached wrestling at Maranatha Baptist University for 28 years.

Russell Owen "Russ" Hellickson is an American former amateur wrestler and collegiate wrestling coach. Born in Madison, Wisconsin, Hellickson competed in the 1976 Summer Olympics for the United States, winning the silver medal in the Freestyle Heavyweight competition and served as the captain of the U.S. squad in 1980. He served as national charter president of Federation of Wrestling Clubs, vice president on the USWF National Board of Control, and as a member of the USWF Hall of Fame selection committee. He was also the head wrestling coach at Wisconsin (1982-1986) before finishing out his coaching career at The Ohio State University from 1986-2006.
