John Andrew Simpson (born 13 July 1988) is an English cricketer who plays for Sussex County Cricket Club. Simpson is a wicket-keeper and left-handed batsman who won the Denis Compton Award in 2004 at Lancashire,and 2011 at Middlesex. He made his international debut for the England cricket team in July 2021.
Simpson represented England U19s on tour to India in 2004/05 aged 16 and again in 2005/06 on a tour to Bangladesh. For the 2007 season he joined Lancashire on a scholarship,he played second XI cricket for Lancashire,Durham and Nottinghamshire during the campaign.
In 2009 he made his professional debut when selected for Middlesex's Twenty20 match against Sussex. On 9 April 2010,Simpson made his first-class debut against Worcestershire at New Road. He made 20 in the first and 0 in the second innings as Middlesex were beaten by 111 runs,he did however take 5 catches behind the stumps.
Simpson averaged 18.05 in the 2012 season,with no hundreds or fifties. [1] However,in the opening round of matches of the 2013 County Championship,Simpson made 97 not out for Middlesex. [2]
In 2018,he played for Brothers Union in the 2017–18 Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League in Bangladesh. [3]
He was signed by Northern Superchargers for first edition of The Hundred tournament. [4] [5] In April 2022,he was bought by the Northern Superchargers for the 2022 season of The Hundred. [6]
Simpson was awarded a testimonial year by Middlesex in 2023. [7]
Simpson joined Sussex on a four-year contract on 20 October 2023. [8] In January 2024 Sussex named him as captain,initially for the first seven County Championship matches. [9]
In July 2021,Simpson was named in England's One Day International (ODI) squad for their series against Pakistan, [10] after the original squad for the tour was forced to withdraw following positive tests for COVID-19. [11] Simpson made his ODI debut on 8 July 2021,for England against Pakistan. [12]
Simpson is the grandson and great-grandson of two former professional rugby league footballers who were regarded as two of the best fullbacks in the game at their times. His great-grandfather,Walter Gowers,played as a fullback for Rochdale Hornets during the Interwar period as well as being selected for the Great Britain touring squad to Australasia in 1928 even though he did not actually play at test match level.
Simpson's grandfather,Ken Gowers (Walter's son) was the outstanding fullback for Swinton from the 1950s to the 1970s. Ken was one of several Swinton players who were capped for Great Britain during the 1960s when the Lions' ground Station Road was the scene of many great Lions' victories in the club's postwar "swinging sixties" decade. Ken Gowers was also a useful cricketer. He would often change from the oval ball game to the summer game after rugby league fixtures were completed each spring.
John Simpson's father Jack Simpson played Lacrosse for England and Rochdale for whom he played in two world championships.
Edmund "Ed" Christopher Joyce is an Irish cricket coach and former cricketer who played for both the Ireland and England national cricket teams. After beginning his career with Middlesex,he moved to Sussex in 2009,before returning to Ireland to play for Leinster Lightning in the fledgling first-class competition,the Irish Inter-Provincial Championship. A left-handed batsman and occasional right-arm bowler of medium pace,Joyce is widely regarded as one of the best cricketers produced by Ireland.
Mohammad Hafeez is a Pakistani cricket coach and former cricketer. He was a member of the Pakistan team that won the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy,and had a major role in the final,where he scored an unbeaten innings of 57. He retired from Test cricket after the third and final match against New Zealand in Abu Dhabi in December 2018,departing the ground for the final time in white clothing to a guard of honour from his teammates. On 3 January 2022,he announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket,ending a career that spanned more than 18 years.
Luke James Wright is an English former cricketer. He was a right-handed batsman and a right-arm medium bowler. Wright joined Sussex in 2004,having started his career at Leicestershire. He was named in England's squad for the Under-19 World Cup in 2004,and joined the International Twenty20 squad for the 2007 Twenty20 World Championship in September 2007. He made his One Day International debut on 5 September 2007 against India. In November 2022,he became a selector for the England men's team,announcing his retirement from playing at the same time. Wright was a member of the England team that won the 2010 ICC World Twenty20.

Adil Usman Rashid is an English cricketer who plays for England in One Day International (ODI) and Twenty20 International (T20I) cricket,and previously played for the Test team. In domestic cricket,he represents Yorkshire,and has played in multiple Twenty20 leagues,he was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs.2 Crore,in the 2023 Indian Premier League auction. Willey was a member of the England team that won the 2022 T20 World Cup. On 1 November 2023,he announced his retirement from international cricket,following the 2023 Cricket World Cup.
Joseph Kenneth Gowers was an English professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1950s,1960s and 1970s. He played at representative level for Great Britain (vice-captain),England and Rugby League XIII,and at club level for Newbold Intermediates ARLFC and Swinton,as a goal-kicking fullback,and occasionally scrum-half.

Reece James William Topley is an English international cricketer who plays for the England cricket team in white ball cricket as a left-arm fast medium bowler. He plays for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League.

Brydon Alexander Carse is a South African born English cricketer who plays for Durham County Cricket club and the England Cricket team. Primarily a right-arm fast bowler,he also bats right handed. He is the son of Zimbabwean cricketer James Alexander Carse,who played in England for Northamptonshire. Carse generates genuine pace and regularly clocks speeds around 90mph(145kph). He made his international debut for the England cricket team in July 2021.
Alexandra Hartley is an English former cricketer who played as a left-arm orthodox spin bowler. Between 2016 and 2019,she appeared in 28 One Day Internationals and four Twenty20 Internationals for England,and was part of the side that won the 2017 World Cup. She played domestic cricket for Lancashire,Middlesex,Surrey Stars,Lancashire Thunder,North West Thunder,Manchester Originals and Welsh Fire in England,as well as Tasmania and Hobart Hurricanes in Australia.
Jofra Chioke Archer is a Barbadian-English cricketer who represents England in international cricket. He is a right-arm fast bowler. Linsey Claire Neale Smith is an English cricketer who plays for Sussex,Southern Vipers,Northern Superchargers and Sydney Sixers. A slow left-arm orthodox bowler,she originally played for Berkshire before moving to Sussex ahead of the 2017 season.
