Joymalya Bagchi (born 3 October 1966) is an Indian jurist from West Bengal who was appointed as the Justice of the Supreme Court of India since 17 March 2025. He was serving as the judge of the Calcutta High Court from November 2021 till March 2025. He is in line to be Chief Justice of India in 2031. [1] [2]

Bagchi was born on 3 October 1966 in Calcutta,West Bengal,in a Hindu Bramhin family.His father was a lawyer and his mother was a doctor.He studied at Calcutta Boys' School and later passed a law degree at Calcutta University in the year 1991. [3]
Bagchi was an advocate affialated with West Bengal Bar Association since 1991. He successfully argued before a special bench of the Calcutta High Court against the West Bengal government’s ban on Dwikhondito,a book authored by Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen. [4]
He was appointed as permanent judge of the High Court on 27 June 2011. He was then transferred to Andhra Pradesh High Court briefly from January till November 2021,later reinstating to Calcutta High Court judge on 8 November 2021. [5]
Bagchi is ranked as eleventh in the seniority of all-India combined High Court judges,including the chief justices. He was recommended by collegium of the Supreme Court of India to elevate his status as judge of the Supreme Court on March 2025. [6] [7]
