  3. "At Ancyra, in Galatia, the holy martyr Eustathius. After various torments, he was plunged into a river, but being delivered by an angel, was finally called to his reward by a dove coming from heaven." [11]
  4. "At Miletus, in the time of the emperor Licinius, the holy martyr Acatius, who completed his martyrdom by having his head struck off, after having undergone different torments and been thrown into a furnace, from which he came out uninjured through the assistance of God." [11]
  5. Name days celebrated today include:

  6. Kontakion of the Righteous One. Third Tone:
    Leaving all the world behind, with its impermanent glory, thou wast wedded unto Christ, the King immortal and holy, bringing Him as precious dowry thy maiden beauty and thy trophies won through abstinence over demons. O Irene, our righteous Mother, entreat thy Bridegroom to show His mercy to us." [20]
  7. In some parishes it is customary to bless apples on the feast of Saint Irene Chrysovalantou.

  9. "At Milan, the birthday of the holy martyrs Nazarius and a boy named Celsus. While the persecution excited by Nero was raging, they were beheaded by Anolinus, after long sufferings and afflictions endured in prison." [11]
  10. "AT Rome, the martyrdom of St. Victor, pope and martyr." [11]
  11. He lived as a hermit on an island in the River Saône.
  12. "At Lyons, St. Peregrinus, priest, whose happiness in heaven is attested by glorious miracles." [11]
  13. Born in Wales, he became a disciple of St Illtyd at Llantwit Major and then for a time was monk and abbot of the monastery on Caldey Island. He left Caldey and visited Ireland. Then he went to Cornwall and was consecrated bishop by St Dubricius. Finally he crossed to Brittany and spent the rest of his life enlightening that country, basing himself at Dol. He was one of the greatest missionaries of his century.

  15. According to some he was one of four English pilgrims who reposed in this region in the seventh century.
