The Kapp Toscana Group is a geologic group in Svalbard and Jan Mayen in the Barents Sea, Norway. [1]
The group dates back to the Late Triassic, and comprises the rock formations of Tschermakfjellet, De Geerdalen and Wilhelmøya. [2] The group is named from the headland of Kapp Toscana at the southern side of Van Keulenfjorden in Wedel Jarlsberg Land at Spitsbergen, Svalbard. [3] The thickness of the group varies from 8–500 metres (26–1,640 ft) of deltaic shales with interbedded sandstones. [4]
The Kapp Toscana Group was initially defined as a formation, [5] but has later become a group. [6] The type section was taken from Kapp Toscana at Van Keulenfjorden, where the thickness of the unit was 200 metres (660 ft), while its two members Tschermakfjellet and De Geerdalen had type sections from Botneheia. [7]
Svalbard and Jan Mayen is a statistical designation defined by ISO 3166-1 for a collective grouping of two remote jurisdictions of Norway: Svalbard and Jan Mayen. While the two are combined for the purposes of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) category, they are not administratively related. This has further resulted in the country code top-level domain .sj being issued for Svalbard and Jan Mayen, and ISO 3166-2:SJ. The United Nations Statistics Division also uses this code, but has named it the Svalbard and Jan Mayen Islands.
The Greenland Sea is a body of water that borders Greenland to the west, the Svalbard archipelago to the east, Fram Strait and the Arctic Ocean to the north, and the Norwegian Sea and Iceland to the south. The Greenland Sea is often defined as part of the Arctic Ocean, sometimes as part of the Atlantic Ocean. However, definitions of the Arctic Ocean and its seas tend to be imprecise or arbitrary. In general usage the term "Arctic Ocean" would exclude the Greenland Sea. In oceanographic studies the Greenland Sea is considered part of the Nordic Seas, along with the Norwegian Sea. The Nordic Seas are the main connection between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans and, as such, could be of great significance in a possible shutdown of thermohaline circulation. In oceanography the Arctic Ocean and Nordic Seas are often referred to collectively as the "Arctic Mediterranean Sea", a marginal sea of the Atlantic.
Peltostega is an extinct genus of prehistoric trematosaurians. The type is the only known species, Peltostega erici It is known from the Early Triassic Kongressfjellet Formation of Svalbard and Jan Mayen.
The Molteno Formation is a geological formation found in several localities in Lesotho and South Africa. It lies mainly south of Maseru, near Burgersdorp, Aliwal North, Dordrecht, Molteno, and Elliot. It extends as far north as Matatiele in the Eastern Cape. The formation's localities lie along the Drakensberg Mountains in Kwazulu-Natal, and near Ladybrand in the Free State of South Africa. The Molteno Formation is the lowermost of the three formations in the Stormberg Group of the greater Karoo Supergroup. The Molteno Formation represents the initial phase of preserved sedimentation of the Stormberg Group.
Kapp Muyen is a cape just 107 m (350 ft) west of Beerenberg, the stratovolcano which forms the northeastern end of the Norwegian island of Jan Mayen. The point is named after the Dutch whaling master Willem Cornelisz. van Muyden, who was among the first to catch whales at Jan Mayen.
Ingebrigtsenbukta is a bay at the south shore of Van Keulenfjorden inside Sør-Spitsbergen National Park. The bay is approximately 3 km wide, running from Kapp Toscana in the west to Ålesundneset in the east. The bay was named after Norwegian whaler Morten Andreas Ingebrigtsen.
Arnesenodden is a headland on Svenskøya in Kong Karls Land, Svalbard. It is the most northern point of Svenskøya, at the foot of the mountain Mohnhøgda. The headland is named after Arctic explorer Magnus Arnesen.
Mariaholmen is an islet in Nathorst Land at the mouth of Van Mijenfjorden at Spitsbergen, Svalbard. It is located south of Akseløya, between Akseløya and Måseneset. While Akselsundet north of Akseløya is regarded as the main entrance to Van Mijenfjorden, Mariasundet between Mariaholmen and Måseneset is also navigable.
Kapp Wien is a headland at the southeastern side of the island of Jan Mayen, about halfway between Olonkinbyen and Sørkapp. It defines the northeastern extension of the bay Hornbækbukta.
Båtvika is a cove at the southern part of the island of Jan Mayen. It is located at the southeastern side of the island, in the southwestern part of Rekvedbukta, northeast of Kapp Traill. The settlement Olonkinbyen is located on the plain northeast of the cove, and Båtvika is the settlement's nearest harbour.
Kapp Dunér is a headland at the island of Bjørnøya of the Svalbard archipelago, Norway. It is the westernmost point of Bjørnøya. The point is named after Swedish astronomer Nils Christoffer Dunér.
The Sulphur Mountain Formation is a geologic formation of Early to Middle Triassic age. It is present on the western edge of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin in the foothills and Rocky Mountains of western Alberta and northeastern British Columbia. It includes marine fossils from the time shortly after the Permian-Triassic extinction event.
The Wetterstein Formation is a regional geologic formation of the Northern Limestone Alps and Western Carpathians extending from southern Bavaria, Germany in the west, through northern Austria to northern Hungary and western Slovakia in the east. The formation dates back to the Ladinian to Carnian stages of the Late Triassic. The formation is named after the Wetterstein Mountains in southern Germany and northwestern Austria. The center of its distribution, however, is in the Karwendel Mountains. It occurs in the Northern and Southern Limestone Alps and in the Western Carpathians.
De Geerdalen is a valley in Nordenskiöld Land at Spitsbergen, Svalbard. It is named after Swedish geologist and Arctic explorer Gerard De Geer. The mountain pass of Kreklingpasset divides De Geerdalen from Helvetiadalen. The river of De Geerelva flows through the valley, and debouches into Sassenfjorden at Elveneset.
Botneheia is a mountain in Nordenskiöld Land at Spitsbergen, Svalbard. It has a height of 522 m.a.s.l., and is located south of Sassenfjorden, east of the valley of De Geerdalen.
Tschermakfjellet is a mountain in Dickson Land at Spitsbergen, Svalbard. It has a height of 422 m.a.s.l., and is located between the valley of Sauriedalen and Kongressfjellet. The mountain is named after Austrian mineralogist Gustav Tschermak von Seysenegg.
