The Kawasaki KDC-2 was a 1920s Japanese light civil transport which Kawasaki developed from its Kawasaki Army Type 88 Reconnaissance Aircraft. Two were built and flown in 1928 and flew both regular and irregular services; the last retired in 1935.
As part of a drive to increase awareness of the importance of both military and commercial aviation in 1920s Japan, the Imperial Maritime Defense Volunteer Association ordered two light passenger aircraft from Kawasaki. These aircraft, based on the Type 88 military reconnaissance design, were to be loaned to the Asahi Shimbun newspaper, which was sponsoring a Tokyo-Osaka air service. Since this is an over-water route, the ability to fit floats was specified. [1]
It was an all metal-structured single bay biplane, with fabric-covered wings that were rectangular in plan out to blunted tips. The Type 88's mid-span, broad I-form interplane struts were replaced by N-form ones between the wing spars but its long diagonal struts from the lower wing roots across the bay were retained. The changes resulted from a decrease in the upper span and an increase of both span and chord of the lower wing. The wing centre-section was joined to the fuselage with a pair of outward-leaning N-form cabane struts. There were ailerons on both upper and lower wings, externally connected. [1]
The KDC-2 was powered by a 500–630 hp (370–470 kW) water-cooled V12 BMW VI, its radiator hung below the nose, driving a two-bladed propeller. The flat-sided, all metal fuselage had Dornier-style stressed skin. Its pilot sat in an open cockpit just behind the upper wing trailing edge, ahead of an enclosed, windowed, four seat passenger cabin which could be reconfigured for mailplane or photo-reconnaissance duties. The Type 88's tail was retained, metal-framed and fabric-covered like the wings. The fin had a cropped triangular profile and carried a rounded, rather pointed, balanced rudder which reached down to the keel. Its V-strut braced tailplane was mounted on top of the fuselage and carried roughly rectangular elevators with cut-outs for rudder movement. [1]
The KDC-2 could operate off land or water. As a landplane, it had fixed, conventional landing gear. Its landing wheels were on a single axle and the partly-faired legs and trailing drag struts were mounted on the lower fuselage longerons. Float operations required the fitting of a larger, deeper rudder. [1]
The two KDC-2s built were completed by October 1928 and flew soon after. [1]
They were briefly operated between Tokyo and Osaka by Tozo Teiki Kokuka (East-West Regular Air Transport Association) until Nihon Koku Yuso began flying the same route. Instead the Asahi Shimbun organized the All Japan City-Visiting Flight. They flew in formation over many Japanese cities, starting in the east from July 1929 then moving westwards in October. Lectures were given on the coming importance of air transport and generally promoting air-mindedness. [1]
After the tours the two aircraft they flew regular mail flights between Tokyo and Niigata. Asahi Shimbun also used them itself for carrying people and materials, as well as for aerial photography. They carried couriers into Manchuria during the Manchurian Incident of September 1931. [1]
The first KDC-2 was badly damaged during a water take-off in September 1930. Repairs took a year then, in June 1932, it was badly damaged again in a landing accident and abandoned. After its visits to Manchuria the second aircraft returned to regular passenger services from Tokyo to Toyama and Sendai. It was retired in April 1935 after logging 723 flying hours but remained useful as a training airframe with the Student's Aviation League. [1]

The Kawasaki Army Type 88 Reconnaissance Aircraft was a Japanese single-engined biplane designed for Kawasaki by Richard Vogt. Originally known by its company designation KDA-2, it was accepted by the Imperial Japanese Army as the Type 88 Reconnaissance Aircraft. The Type 88 number was designated for the year the aircraft was accepted, which was the year 2588 in the Japanese imperial year calendar, or 1928 in the Gregorian calendar. The basic design was modified into the Type 88 Light Bomber that was used in combat over China in the Second Sino-Japanese War. The Type 88 was built in large numbers and remained in service until 1940.
The Mitsubishi Ki-2 was a light bomber built by Mitsubishi for the Imperial Japanese Army Air Service (IJAAS) in the 1930s. Its Allied nickname was "Louise". Despite its antiquated appearance, the Ki-2 was successfully used in Manchukuo and in North China during the early stages of the Second Sino-Japanese War, in areas where danger from enemy fighter aircraft was minimal. It was later used in a training role.
The Kawasaki Ki-3 was a light bomber built by Kawasaki Kōkūki Kōgyō K.K. for the Imperial Japanese Army in the 1930s. It was the last biplane bomber design to be produced for the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force, and saw combat service in Manchukuo and in north China during the early stages of the Second Sino-Japanese War.

The Aichi AB-1 was a result of a 1926 government call for a small, Japanese-built, civil transport biplane able to operate from land or water. It won the contest in both roles but did not reach production as airlines moved from biplanes to monoplanes. Nonetheless, it remained in commercial use well into the 1930s.
The Latécoère 14 and Latécoère 16 were similar French passenger and postal aircraft of advanced design built in 1923. They differed chiefly in engine power. Only one of each was constructed. The 14's type number was reused for an unrelated parasol wing prototype that was basis of the more successful Latécoère 17.
The de Havilland DH.27 Derby was a large single-engined biplane designed to a heavy day bomber Air Ministry specification. It did not reach production.
The Fairey S.9/30 was a two-seat, single-engined biplane built to meet an Air Ministry specification for a fleet reconnaissance aircraft. It flew during 1934–36 in both land- and seaplane configurations. Although only one was built, it was the progenitor of the Fairey Swordfish.
The Boulton & Paul P.15 Bolton was a one-off experimental twin-engined reconnaissance biplane ordered by the Air Ministry to sustain Boulton & Paul's development of steel-framed aircraft early in the 1920s. It was the RAF's first metal-framed aircraft.
The Latécoère 340 was a three-engined, parasol winged flying boat designed in 1929 in France for middle-distance, overseas routes. The sole prototype was destroyed early in the testing programme, and no more were built.
The Parnall Pipit was a single-engined, single-seat naval fighter designed to an Air Ministry specification in 1927. Two prototypes were built but both were destroyed by tail flutter.
The Wibault 2, Wib 2 or Wib 2 BN.2 was a single engine biplane aircraft designed and built in France in the early 1920s. It was intended as a heavy night bomber, though a thirteen-seat passenger version was proposed. Only one was built.
The Ishikawajima T-2 was a Japanese reconnaissance aircraft designed to meet the requirements of an Army competition between wood- and metal framed contestants. First flown in 1927 only two, with different engines, were built.
The Tokyo Koku Aiba-Tsubame or Tokyo Aviation Aiba-Swallow was a 1930s Japanese civil transport with seats for three passengers. It was intended to be cheap to produce so, although its fuselage was a new design, its wings and undercarriage were those of another Japanese aircraft. Two were built and flew taxi services and joyrides.

The Itoh Emi 31 was a one-off Japanese civil flying boat first flown in 1922. Operated by an airline on a scheduled route for two years apart from a short break serving a newspaper, it could carry up to three passengers.
