Khairagarh is a city in Khairagarh-Chhuikhadan-Gandai district. Formerly, it was the part of Rajnandgaon district.

History

Khairagarh State was a feudatory state of the former Central Provinces of British India. [1] Pandadah (8 kilometer from Khairagarh) is one of the most historical places in Chhattisgarh. The chief, who was descended From the old Nagvanshi Rajputs royal family, received the title of Raja, The King, as a hereditary distinction in 1898. The state included a fertile plain, yielding rice. [2] [3]

Geography

Khairagarh is located at 21°25′N80°58′E / 21.42°N 80.97°E / 21.42; 80.97 . [4] It has an average elevation of 307 metres (1007 feet).

Climate

This part of India has a hot summer between mid-April to mid-June. Besides these two months, the climate is generally pleasant. Khairagarh receives an average rainfall of around 900 millimeters per year. In winters, the minimum temperature falls to 7-9 °C.

One may enjoy monsoon, autumn, winter, and spring at one place.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census, [5] Khairagarh had a population of 15,149. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Khairagarh has an average literacy rate of 73%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 81%, and female literacy is 64%. In Khairagarh, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age. Majority of population are the Lodhi rajputs along with few other castes and tribes. Thus it is the only area in Chhattisgarh which can said to be the "Garh of Lodhis".

Education

Indira Performing Art and Music University

The Indira Performing Art and Music University (Indira Kala Sangeet Vishw vidyalaya) is Asia's first university dedicated to visual and performing arts.

Indira Kala-Sangeet Vishwvidyalaya was established under the Act XIX of 1956 of the Government of Madhya Pradesh. After the creation of the new state of Chhattisgarh in 2001, the Governor of Chhattisgarh is the Chancellor and Administrative Academic Head of I. K. S. V. V. Khairagarh.

In 1956, the then-rulers of princely state of Khairagarh donated their palace to open a University of Music and Fine Arts. The late Raja Birendra Bahadur Singh, and the late Rani Padmavati Devi, named this university after their beloved daughter ‘Indira’. [6]

To join and study at the Indira Kala Sangeet Vishwavidyalaya is a way to enjoy Indian art forms. The university offers a long list of subjects and courses related to diverse art forms like classical vocal music (Hindustani and Carnatic), classical instrumental music (Hindustani and Carnatic), classical dance styles (Kathak and Bharatanatyam), folk dance and music, painting, sculpture, graphics, history of Indian art and culture, and various literatures. The university is involved in teaching and research in Indian performing and visual art forms. The university has forty-five affiliated colleges, one affiliated research center and a good number of recognized examination centers throughout India. The university is one of a kind in India as it provides degree for different forms of classical dance and music. The rest of the universities provide with diploma courses for the same.

Transport

The three nearby railway stations, Rajnandgaon, Dongargarh, and Durg, are 40, 42 and 55 kilometres away from Khairagarh respectively. Direct trains for Vishakhapatnam, Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Howrah, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Trivandrum, Amritsar and New Delhi are available from these railway stations, situated on the main train route of Howrah-Mumbai via Nagpur. The state capital Raipur is a three-hour journey from Khairagarh University. Raipur and Nagpur airports are at a distance of 100 and 225 kilometres, respectively.

Shrikrishna Narayan Ratanjankar born 31 December 1899 and died 14 February 1974. He was a distinguished scholar and teacher of Hindustani classical music, from the Agra gharana. Foremost disciple of Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande and Faiyaz Khan of Baroda State, he also remained principal of Bhatkhande Music Institute, Lucknow, for many years, where he trained many noted names in the field of music.

Bambleshwari Temple is a Hindu temple, located at Dongargarh in Rajnandgaon district, Chhattisgarh, India. It is on a hilltop of 1600 feet. This temple is referred as Badi Bambleshwari. Another temple at ground level, the Chhotti Bambleshwari is situated about 1/2 km from the main temple complex. These temples are revered by lakhs of people of Chhattisgarh who flock around the shrine during the Navratris of Kavar and Chaitra. There is tradition of lighting Jyoti Kalash during Navaratris here.

Nav sadhana Kala Kendra College of Dance and Music is situated in a pollution free green suburb, near Tarna, Shivpur, of the city - Kashi in india. The college was founded in July 1996 by the catholic Bishops of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Rajasthan, to promote Indian culture and music. Nav Sadhana Kala Kendra trains students in Bharatnatyam and Hindustani Vocal.

Prayag Sangeet Samiti is an institute imparting education in Hindustani Classical music, in Prayagraj, India. It awards diplomas and certificates in vocal music, instrumental music as well as classical dance. It was established in 1926. This institution is registered under the Indian Societies Act. The major aim of this organization is to propagate various vocal and instrumental music streams that are widely recognized by state governments, universities and educational bodies. Khairagarh State was one of the princely states of India during the period of the British Raj. Khairagarh town in Khairagarh-Chhuikhadan-Gandai district of Chhattisgarh was the capital of the state and the seat of the Raja's residence.

Govind Ram Nirmalkar (1935–2014) was an Indian actor and folk theatre artist, known for his contributions to the Nacha folk theatre of Chhattisgarh. His portrayal of the protagonist in Charan Das Chor, an award winning play by Habib Tanveer, won him critical acclaim. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2009, for his contributions to Arts. He was also a recipient of the 2012 Sangeet Natak Akademi Award.

Puru Dadheech is a Kathak dancer. He is a choreographer and educator of Indian classical dance, and is known for his pioneering work in the field of Kathak. At the oldest Kathak department which was formed in 1956 at Indira Kala Sangeet Vishwavidyalaya Public University located in Khairagarh, Puru Dadheech instated the first Kathak syllabus in 1961. He is the holder of the first Doctorate in Kathak Classical Dance and emphasizes the relevance of Shastras in the Kathak repertoire. He was awarded Padma Shri, the 4th highest civilian award of India He is currently serving as the Director of the world's first dedicated Kathak research Centre at the Sri Sri University, Cuttack called Sri Sri Centre for Advanced Research in Kathak.

Pandit Falguni Mitra is an Indian Hindustani classical vocalist who is known as a Dhrupad exponent of India. Mitra belongs to the Bettiah gharana.

Khairagarh-Chhuikhadan-GandaiKCG is a district in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh which consists of three cities, Khairagarh, Chhuikhadan and Gandai. It was carved out of Rajnandgaon in 2022. It is the 31st district of the state inaugurated by chief minister Bhupesh Baghel.
