Kodinsk (Russian : Коди́нск) is a town and the administrative center of Kezhemsky District of Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia, located on the Angara River, 735 kilometers (457 mi) north of Krasnoyarsk. Population: 14,830 (2010 Census);^[2]14,746 (2002 Census);^[7]14,050 (1989 Census).^[8]

Russian is an East Slavic language, which is official in the Russian Federation, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, as well as being widely used throughout Eastern Europe, the Baltic states, the Caucasus and Central Asia. It was the de facto language of the Soviet Union until its dissolution on 25 December 1991. Although nearly three decades have passed since the breakup of the Soviet Union, Russian is used in official capacity or in public life in all the post-Soviet nation-states, as well as in Israel and Mongolia.

The classification system of the types of inhabited localities in Russia, the former Soviet Union, and some other post-Soviet states has certain peculiarities compared with the classification systems in other countries.

Kezhemsky District is an administrative and municipal district (raion), one of the forty-three in Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia. It is located in the east of the krai and borders with Evenkiysky District in the north, Irkutsk Oblast in the east and south, and with Boguchansky District in the west. The area of the district is 34,541 square kilometers (13,336 sq mi). Its administrative center is the town of Kodinsk. Population: 22,072 (2010 Census); 24,997 (2002 Census); 31,233 (1989 Census). The population of Kodinsk accounts for 67.2% of the district's total population.

History

It was founded in 1977 as the settlement of Kodinskoye (Коди́нское) servicing the construction of the Boguchanskaya hydroelectric power station;^{[ citation needed ]} the name is after the Koda River, a tributary of the Angara that ends about 12 km northeast of the town. The name Koda in turn is derived from Evenki word kada, meaning "cliff".^[9] It was granted urban-type settlement status in 1978 and town status in 1989.^{[ citation needed ]}

The Boguchany Dam is a large hydroelectric dam on the Angara River in Kodinsk, Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia. It has an installed capacity of 2,997 MW. Construction of the power plant was completed when a ninth and final generator was brought online in January 2015.

The Koda River is a tributary on the right (north) side of the Angara River, 13 km northeast of the city of Kodinsk, in the Kezhemsky District of Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia.

Administrative and municipal status

Within the framework of administrative divisions, Kodinsk serves as the administrative center of Kezhemsky District.^[1] As an administrative division, it is, together with the village of Syromolotovo, incorporated within Kezhemsky District as the district town of Kodinsk.^[1] As a municipal division, the district town of Kodinsk is incorporated within Kezhemsky Municipal District as Kodinsk Urban Settlement.^[4]

Town of district significance is an administrative division of a district in a federal subject of Russia. It is equal in status to a selsoviet or an urban-type settlement of district significance, but is organized around a town ; often with surrounding rural territories.
