Leslie Maxie (born January 4, 1967, in San Francisco, California) is a retired American track and field athlete and subsequently a television broadcast journalist.
While attending Mills High School, she set the still standing World Youth Best of 55.20 seconds in the 400 metre hurdles on June 9, 1984, while finishing second at the 1984 TAC USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, held at nearby San Jose City College. [1]
Maxie competed in the 1988 Summer Olympics, running 56.10 seconds to finish a non-qualifying 5th place in the heat of the 400 hurdles. [2] On a lighter note, she did win, "Best Smile" at the Olympic Village.
Maxie was coached by the legendary Ed Parker. As a member of the Millbrae Lions Track Club, a team which encouraged young athletes to try multiple events, Maxie competed in the High Jump, Triple Jump 400 metres and 100 metre hurdles. As a freshman at the 1982 CIF California State Meet, she was in the top four in three events. To qualify, she won the CCS Section Championships and placed second to Wendy Brown in both jumps. [3] 1983, she won the 400 m, see the race, and placed second in the 100 hurdles. 1984 was her first year to experiment with the long hurdles race. A week before her World record saw her winning the state meet in meet record time. As a senior, she repeated her 300 hurdle championship. [6] She was Track and Field News "High School Athlete of the Year" in 1984. [7]
After high school, she studied Public Policy and Planning at the University of Southern California, where she is still ranked as the #2 400 hurdler of all time (school record holder for 13 years until surpassed by future Olympic bronze medalist Tasha Danvers). [8] [9] She finished second in the 400 hurdles and was on the National Champion 4x400 relay at the 1987 NCAA Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships, thus achieving All-American status in both the 400 hurdles and the 4x400 relay. She was team captain in 1990. [10]
Over her career, she was ranked in the U.S. top ten in the 400 hurdles four times. [11]
As a young athlete she was selected to work on the children's programming show Kidwatch on KRON which led to her interest in journalism. [12] She also pursued and won a recurring singing role on Just Kidding on the same station.
Maxie returned to TV in the mid 1990s. She purposefully did not cover track and field until she was established as a general correspondent which allowed her to cover the Super Bowl, World Series, NBA All Star Games, Tour de France, championship boxing and tennis for Fox, CBS, Oxygen Media and NBC. When she did cover track it was in support of Carol Lewis on events she did not cover. Maxie's insightful commentary and intelligent interviewing skills made her look like a shining star. ESPN took notice and Maxie was the first member hired for the morning talk show, "Cold Pizza" in 2003. When talk began of moving the show to Bristol, CT Maxie opted out of her contract and began freelancing for the network and she established her own television production company, LeMax Productions LLC in 2005. LeMax Production's first client was Red Bull energy drink based in Austria. LeMax went on to contract with Madison Square Garden Network, ABC, ESPN amongst others. Maxie has also done work as a motivational speaker. [13]
In 2009, Maxie joined NASCAR [14] as Manager of Communications for East Regional Media Outreach. [15] She has written episodes for the NASCAR BET show called Changing Lanes. [16]
Joanna Dove Hayes is an American hurdler, who won the gold medal in the 100 metres hurdles at the 2004 Summer Olympics.
Kerron Stephon Clement is a Trinidadian-born American track and field athlete who competes in the 400-meter hurdles and 400-meter sprint. He held the indoor world record in the 400-meter sprint, having broken Michael Johnson's mark in 2005.
Valerie Brisco-Hooks is an Olympian who won three gold medals as an Olympic track and field athlete at the 1984 Olympics at Los Angeles, California, making her the first Olympian to win gold medals in both the 200- and 400-meter races at a single Olympics.
Janeene Hope Vickers-McKinney is an American former athlete who competed mainly in the 400 metres hurdles. She won bronze medals in the 400 metres hurdles at the 1992 Olympic Games and the 1991 World Championships. She also won the 1990 US Championship.
Tasha De'Anka Danvers is a British Olympic bronze medallist, who finished in third place in the 400 metres hurdles at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. She was born in London to two athletes, Dorrett McKoy and Donald Danvers, who both moved to the United Kingdom from Jamaica as children.
Benny Brown was an Olympic gold-medal winner in the 1976 4x400 Men's Relay running the second leg. He teamed with Herman Frazier, Fred Newhouse and Maxie Parks.
Lashinda Demus is a retired American hurdler who specialized in the 400 meter hurdles, an event in which she was the 2011 world champion and 2012 Olympic gold medalist, becoming the first woman from the United States to win the Olympic 400 m hurdles title.
The CIF California State Meet is the annual championship track and field meet for the California Interscholastic Federation. The meet was started in 1915 for boys and 1974 for girls. Every athlete in every high school in California has a direct qualification path that can reach the state meet. In recent years a minimum of 27 athletes in each event reach this final meet of the official track and field season. Beyond those 27 who can qualify by placing in their individual section finals, "at-large" standards have been established to allow additional competitors to make the field.
Brenda Taylor is an American track and field athlete who specialises in the 400 meter hurdles. She reached the final of the event at the 2004 Summer Olympics. She also competed at the 2001 World Championships in Athletics and won a medal at the 2003 IAAF World Indoor Championships in the 4×400-meter relay.
George Porter is a retired American hurdler. While running for Cabrillo High School in Lompoc, California, he set the NFHS record in the 300 meters intermediate hurdles at 35.32 on May 24, 1985, in the CIF Southern Section Masters Meet. Porter's record in the hurdles lasted until the State Meet in 2007, when Jeshua Anderson of Taft High School improved the record by .04 of a second. Reggie Wyatt has since improved the record again to 35.02, set at the same meet in 2009. Porter went on to win the State Meet with a time of 35.50.

Dalilah Muhammad is an American track and field athlete who specializes in the 400 meters hurdles. She is the 2016 Rio Olympics champion and 2020 Tokyo Olympics silver medalist, becoming at the latter the then-second-fastest woman of all time in the event with her personal best of 51.58 seconds. Muhammad was second at both the 2013 and 2017 World Championships to take her first gold in 2019, setting the former world record of 52.16 s. She was the second female 400 m hurdler in history, after Sally Gunnell, to have won the Olympic, World titles and broken the world record. At both the 2019 World Championships and Tokyo Games, she also took gold as part of women's 4 × 400 metres relay team.
Ashley Spencer is an American track and field athlete who competes in the 400 metres and the 400 metres hurdles. In the 400m hurdles, she is the 2016 Olympic bronze medalist. In the 400m, she is the 2012 World Junior Champion and the 2016 World Indoor silver medalist. She is coached by 1996 Olympic bronze medalist Tonya Buford-Bailey.
The 4 × 400 metres relay at the Summer Olympics is the longest track relay event held at the multi-sport event. The men's relay has been present on the Olympic athletics programme since 1912 and the women's event has been continuously held since the 1972 Olympics. The inaugural mixed 4 × 400 metres relay was held at the 2020 Olympics. It is the most prestigious 4×400 m relay race at the elite level. At the 1908 Summer Olympics, a precursor to this event was held – the 1600 m medley relay. This event, with two legs of 200 m, one of 400 m, and a final leg of 800 m, was the first track relay in Olympic history.
Sage Heather Walker is a Canadian athlete specializing in the 400 metres hurdles. Competing internationally for Canada, she is the reigning Pan American champion in the 400 m hurdles, having also won Pan American medals in 2015 and 2019 as part of Canada's relay team.
Sydney Michelle McLaughlin-Levrone is an American hurdler and sprinter who competes in the 400 meters hurdles and is the world record holder in that event. She has won gold in the 2020 and 2024 Summer Olympics, as well as the 2022 World Athletics Championships. She set a world record time of 50.37 seconds at the 2024 Summer Olympics on August 8, 2024, breaking her own old world record of 50.65 seconds. She is the first track athlete to break four world records in the same event; setting four world records during 13 months, she was the first woman to break the 52-second and 51-second barriers in the 400 m hurdles. She won the silver medal at the 2019 World Championships. At all four competitions, she also took gold as part of a women's 4 × 400 m relay team.
The 1984 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships took place between June 8–9 at Jaguar Stadium on the campus of San Jose City College in San Jose, California. The meet was organized by The Athletics Congress.
Kendall Ellis is an American sprinter. Ellis won gold in the 4x400 m relay and bronze in the Mixed 4x400 metres at the Tokyo Olympics. She competed in the 400 meters at the 2017 and 2019 World Championships, winning gold medals as a part of prelim 4×400 m relays. As a junior, Ellis took gold in the 4×400 m relay and bronze in the 400 meters at the 2015 Pan American Junior Championships.
Shiann Salmon is a Jamaican track and field athlete who specializes in the 400 metres hurdles and 400 metres. She represented Jamaica at the 2019 World Athletics Championships, competing in women's 400 metres hurdles.
Anna Cockrell is an American track and field athlete competing in sprinting and hurdling. She is a two-time medalist at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru and won the silver medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics in 400 m hurdles event.
